Many of them are victims of the choices they or others made, which is how their lives become interesting. I aim to see if there is any basis in reality for some of the situations and fears that happen. I also mean that Palahniuk thinks people are afraid of the wrong things, and afraid of too many things in general, and will approach this theory in my discussion. V VI Introduction This thesis has been through an abundance of versions and changed shape and content very many times over the years; from being all psychoanalysis to pure close reading, and ended with a study of victims, fears and reactions. In the end, the amount of close reading that has gone into it has bypassed the use of theory. This is mostly a reaction to past criticism to my over-use of critics, and focusing on that rather than the texts at hand. I find my time disposition in the production process of this paper to be shame, but life will sometimes get in the way of good intentions. As such, I hope that you, dear reader, find my efforts not in vain and take some interest in what my efforts have produced. -

Speaking of Palahniuk’s Fight Club, one of the most prominent literary pieces, we’re sure that its role is mostly underestimated. The crucial point is that Palahniuk’s Fight Club has raised awareness over countless societal issues, including ones pertaining to social relations of modernity. Anti-Consumerist or Pro-Consumerist? It is often speculated that Palahniuk included somewhat a controversial and highly debated essence of the Fight Club itself. While some claim that Fight Club is genuinely a piece aimed to criticize the consumable modernity, others refer to differences between the novel and the film. In particular, it wouldn’t be a big of a surprise to imply that the movie relies on anti-consumerism in more details. Obviously, the transition of the Fight Club into the Project Mayhem was apparently a sign of going off the predetermined rails. Nonetheless, Palahniuk conducted drastic measures to emphasize the dissatisfaction of the club’s members with the essence of consumerism and modern societal relations. So, should it be called an anti-consumerist novel? The answer to this question is varied so that its interpretation should be reviewed from multiple perspectives. Fight Club as a Critique of Consumerist Culture. In some sense, Palahniuk’s Fight Club should be embraced as the title that criticizes cultural notions but not the societal ones. The used instrument for these intentions is a strong satire, which is best seen throughout the novel. By appealing to the generations that were working in jobs they hate as well as a great revolution against culture, Fight Club aims to eliminate the dogma. -

INTRODUCTION The writer intends to review Fight Club written by Chuck Palahniuk. The novel is one of the examples of literary nonfiction. Published in 1996 by W.W Norton, this novel became top selling novel according to Baltimore Sun. Fight Club, written by Chuck Palahniuk has been adapted into a movie, a prequel novel and a comic book sequel. According to The Baltimore Sun this novel is very controversial because of the anarchism and anti-consumerism behaviour done by the characters of the novel. The Baltimore Sun also writes “bravo to Norton for having the courage to publish it” (Hoffert 4). Furthermore violence also appeared in this novel as there are a lot of fight and other form of physical violence. The main purpose of this writing is to review Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk. The writer will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of this novel . The writer decided to choose Fight Club as final project because it is his favorite novel. Fight Club is a very interesting novel although it is hard to understand and disturbing because by showing the consumerism behaviour in this novel, Chuck Palahniuk tries to convey the message that the consumerism behaviour of society nowadays has become worse than ever. 2. SUMMARY OF FIGHT CLUB The center story of Fight Club revolves around the life of an anonymous narrator, a typical American hard working man. Because of the stress caused by his job and tiresome business trips, he suffers insomnia. -

The Narrator (Edward Norton), Addicted to Self-Help Groups
Fight Club (1999) Directed by David Fincher, written by Jim Uhis How can you not like a movie where half a dozen corporate skyscrapers are blown up and the explicit message the film delivers is: ―Things you own end up owning you‖? Easy, when the movie is Fight Club. Anti-consumerism may appear progressive, but what do you replace it with? Under David Fincher‘s direction, Fight Club endorses a peculiar kind of sado-masochistic hedonism for the masculine elite, and a cult-like subservience for the masses. The cure is worse than the disease. No wonder some critics have declared the movie fascist. The movie opens near its eventual climax. The Narrator (Edward Norton – he‘s not named in the movie so I‘ll call him N) is in an office overlooking a big city skyline and Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) is shoving a gun in his mouth, apparently ready to detonate both the pistol and the home-made explosives under the towering corporate icons. The movie then backtracks and the story is told mostly through flashback. N is a modern-day seeker. That means that, in the beginning, he isn‘t sure what he‘s seeking. He‘s a 30-year old businessman who‘s playing the consumption game self- consciously and looking for meaning in the possession of goods. He reads magazines on the toilet about contemporary furniture. Compulsive consumption substitutes for sex. In his own words, he ―had it all‖, including a ―wardrobe that was getting very respectable, close to being complete.‖ Of course, this is a blind alley. -

Universidad Católica de Valencia San Mártir) [email protected] 151 Francisco Collado-Rodríguez’s edited collection of essays on Chuck Palahniuk’s fiction adds to the growing academic interest in the writer’s work and, following on from likeminded compendiums published by Cynthia Kuhn & Lace Rubin and by Jeffrey Sartain in 2009, intends to broaden the focus of earlier studies which gave almost exclusive attention to Palahniuk’s debut novel, Fight Club (1996). Although the three essays that constitute Part I of Collado-Rodríguez’s collection are still dedicated to exploring the now well-trodden path of Fight Club analysis, the editor opens up and simultaneously demarcates the scope of the discussion by focusing an equal number of essays on Palahniuk’s 1999 work, Invisible Monsters (Part II) and his fourth novel from 2001, Choke (Part III). Such a concentration of attention on Palahniuk’s early fiction makes sense —in fact, Collado-Rodríguez insists that the three novels chosen for study are “highly representative of the writer’s particular style and insights” (1)— and yet the absence of any commentaries dedicated to Survivor (1999), Palahniuk’s second published work, seems rather anomalous. Indeed, Survivor is something of an elephant in the room, its omission never explained by Collado-Rodríguez, who only comments that it “garnered acclaim among readers and critics, helping to reinforce Palahniuk’s position in the category of cult writer” (2). Typical analyses of the novel revolve around its existential or nihilist comedy, homoerotic elements, or commentary on consumer culture. However, no critics to date have studied Fight Club’s romantic elements, despite indications by the author that the novel is, in fact, intended to be a romance. This study reimagines and interprets Fight Club, the novel, as a work with romantic elements essential to the structure of the narrative itself. Additionally, it studies the complex interplay of Palahniuk’s romantic elements with questions of gender identity and masculinity. -

Reading his texts requires a particular disposition on the part of the reader, who is asked to leave the comfort zone, and to enter a universe where we are confronted with the darkest side of a reality which is undeniable, but hardly ever put in the forefront. The narrative world of Palahniuk is thus made up of marginal characters: outlaws, transvestites, addicts (drug addicts, sex addicts, alcoholics), etc. However, instead of treating these transgressive characters as the exception, they become the norm. The concept of normalcy is immediately reversed in a fiction where nothing is what it seems at first sight. And yet, although we may find in his novels stories about “ex-centric” people and situations, we never find a critique from the narrator or the author. Palahniuk defines this as “writing without passing judgment” (Stranger than Fiction). This writing style has been classified as minimalist, but the thematic in his work is rather the opposite, being excessive in all possible ways. As Collado points out, “Violence, self-destruction, parental absence, pornography, the crossing of gender and body limits, are favorite themes of Palahniuk’s fiction since his first published novel” (6). All of these subjects are explored in the chapters that appear in the book. Published by Bloomsbury, Francisco Collado’s volume offers a study of the controversial and bestselling author who is becoming more and more respected by the academic world, as evidenced by the recent publications of two studies on his work, such as Jeffrey Sartain’s Sacred and Immoral: On the Writings of Chuck Palahniuk (2008) and Cynthia Kuhn’s and Lance Rubin’s Reading Chuck Palahniuk: American Monsters and Literary Mayhem (2009). -

The Review of Education, Pedagogy, and Cultural Studies, 29:85–110, 2007 Copyright # Taylor & Francis Group, LLC ISSN: 1071-4413 print=1556-3022 online DOI: 10.1080/107144106010 90720 Privatized Resistance: AdBusters and the Culture of Neoliberalism Max Haiven1 In their October 2003 issue, Vancouver-based AdBusters Magazine, internationally renown for fourteen years of trenchant anti- consumerist agitation, announced plans to create and sell the Black Spot, a Portuguese-made canvas sneaker with a two-fold agenda: to ‘‘kick [Nike CEO] Phil Knight’s ass,’’ and to ‘‘do no less than rein- vent capitalism.’’2 Skeptical followers of the magazine, especially of the boisterous writings of its founder and editor Kalle Lasn (now also ‘‘CEO of the Blackspot Anticorporation’’), would not be especially surprised at these hyperbolic pronouncements and would be left to wonder about similar past prophesies such as ‘‘culture- jamming will become to our era what civil rights was to the ‘60s, what feminism was to the ‘70s, what environmental activism was to the ‘80s.’’ (Lasn 2000, xi). Despite disappointing those hold- ing their breath for the fulfillment of these pretensions, AdBusters has captured the imagination of a great many activists, educators, and other culture workers, at least in the global North. AdBusters is known not only for their glossy bimonthly publication and web- site but also for increasingly popular and globalized decentralized campaigns including ‘‘Buy Nothing Day’’ and ‘‘TV Turn-off Week’’ as well as their iconic ‘‘brand’’ of cultural resistance, ‘‘cul- ture jamming’’: the remixing of advertisements in an attempt to unmask (rather than ornament) corporate evils. -

You MUST watch 1 film from each of the categories, and the rest is your choice. 2) Write a response (1-2 pages each) for each film. a. If you have access to a computer/laptop, you may type up your responses in a continuing Google document, 12 point Open Sans, and double-spaced (to be shared with me by the first day of class). b. Each film’s response should be in paragraph form and should be about your observations, insights, comments, and connections that you are making between the readings and the films you watch. c. Also, your responses will be much richer if you research information about the films you watch before you write – simply stating your opinion will not give you much material to write about, and you will not be able to go beyond your own opinion – for example, read online articles/reviews about each film by scholars/critics (New York Times, The Guardian, rogerebert.com, IMDB.com, filmsite.org, etc). SOCIAL ROOM - TOP FLOOR OF HIGH RISE - NIGHT TYLER' s hand holds a HANDGUN with barrel lodged in JACK'S MOUTH. Jack is sitting on a chair. They are both sweating and disheveled, both around 30; Tyler is blond, handsome (we can't see Tyler's face yet, only his body moving); and Jack, brunette, is appealing in a dry sort of way. JACK (V.O.) People are always asking me if I know Tyler Durden. TYLER Three minutes. This is it: Ground zero. Would you like to say a few words to mark the occasion? JACK ...i...ann....iinn..ff...nnyin.... JACK (V.O.) With a gun barrel between your teeth, you speak only in vowels. Tyler removes the gun from Jack's mouth. JACK I can't think of anything. JACK (V.O.) For a second I totally forgot about Tyler's whole controlled demolition thing and I wonder how clean that gun is. Tyler approaches the window so that he can see down --31 stories. TYLER Getting exciting now. JACK (V.O.) That old saying, how you always hurt the one you love, well, it works both ways. JACK (V.O.) We have front row seats for this theater of Mass Destruction. The Demolitions Committee of Project Mayhem wrapped the foundation columns of a dozen buildings with blasting gelatin. In two minutes, primary charges will blow base charges, and a few square blocks will be reduced to smoldering rubble.
