SHALAA FILLY TOPS ARQANA MONDAY GOING SOLO WITH A bay daughter of Haras de Bouquetot=s popular MG1SW ARCADIA ELEVAGE Shalaa (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) led the way during Monday=s penultimate session of the Arqana December Breeding Stock Sale, as trade stayed relatively steady compared to last year=s edition. Sold as lot 787 from Haras de Castillon, the Castillon Bloodstock and Tina Rau Bloodstock-bred February foal was knocked down to Nicolas Lefevre of Equos Racing International and Broadhurst Agency=s Laurent Benoit for €87,000. AI have bought her in association with Laurent Benoit for a group of clients, with a view to offer her at the yearling sales,@ said Lefevre. AShe is a half-sister to a black-type winner from an interesting Quesnay family and I like Anabaa as a broodmare sire. Shalaa=s production seems very promising, so we have a lot to look forward to.@ Cont. p2 Antoine Bellanger chats with Alayna Cullen about his new venture, Arcadia Elevage. Click or tap here to go straight to TDN America. Europe and notable among them is Arcadia Elevage, owned and operated by Antoine Bellanger, former yearling manager at Ecurie des Monceaux who have been leading vendor at the Arqana August Yearling Sale since 2012. "I saw a position at Ecurie des Monceaux, which was very young at that time, not very small but smaller than now,@ recounts Bellanger. AAnd I felt something about the farm, I had a good feeling about the farm. So I took the position. At first we had only maybe four or five yearlings and I used to do everything myself. After 11 years, we sold 60 or 70 yearlings with a lot of staff. So I saw that progression year after year.@ Surely watching an operation like Monceaux grow will stand Bellanger in good stead, but the international experience gained by the 33 year-old Loire Valley native will also have a knock-on effect to his own operation's success. Said Bellanger, "I grew up in the breeding industry; my parents have a small farm in the Loire Valley and I decided to make my career in the breeding industry. I worked six months in France for a small National Hunt breeder called Patrick Boiteau. Then I decided to travel, so I went to Derrinstown Stud in Ireland for a year and a half.@ Cont. p2 TDN EUROPE • PAGE 2 OF 8 • THETDN.COM TUESDAY • 10 DECEMBER 2019

started well. The goal is to keep going on the way we started, keep it simple, to focus on horses and make sure all the clients are happy." Arcadia Elevage's inaugural sale will hopefully be an early Christmas present to Bellanger and his partner Aline Giraud of Aga Khan Studs, but whatever the outcome, momentum is building for the fledgling operation that has its sights set on becoming a leading force among French farms.

Of the stallion prospect that will be Arcadia Elevage's first horse to sell at Arqana, Bellanger thinks he could be the real deal. "Khan is a very interesting prospect,@ Bellanger said. AHe is a Group 1 winner first of all and he's a very, very nice individual. He is also a brother to Kamsin (Ger) who is a proven National Hunt sire in France. I think he ticks all the boxes for breeders." There is an honesty and kindness to Bellanger that instantly puts you in his corner. You can tell that the decision to set up Arcadia Elevage has not been taken lightly and that there is definitely a desire to build a business that looks after its clients and horses to the best of its ability. From his first Group 1 victory, where he produced a LONHRO'S DOMINANCE scintillating late burst to win the 2001 , to his last when he dominated a vintage edition of the George Ryder S. SPANS GENERATIONS in 2004, he compiled a racing career the equal of any, and according to his legendary trainer John Hawkes, he occupies a spot in his mind along with his sire Octagonal (NZ), as the best horse he has trained. When you consider how many top-level horses the master trainer has overseen, that is some recommendation. Being the best-performed son of Octagonal always led to inevitable comparisons between the two, but what he has been able to accomplish post his racing career has surpassed anything the great 'Occy' achieved at stud. Octagonal had a respectable breeding career, producing 539 winners, 25 stakes winners and four Group 1 winners, but Lonhro's stallion career is simply on another level. That was Lonhro's most famous success in a 35-start career which yielded 26 wins, including 11 at Group 1 level. But it is just a small part of the enormous legacy he has left, and continues to leave Australian Thoroughbred racing as we mark his 21st birthday on Dec. 10. Lonhro is also an increasingly influential broodmare sire, with his mares producing 26 stakes winners to date, including recent Group 1 winner Gatting (Hard Spun {USA}). A colt from his Group 1 winning daughter Bounding by Curlin (USA) recently sold for a record US$4.1 million (AU$5.9 million) at the Keeneland September Sale. His legacy will carry on well beyond his 21st birthday on Tuesday, but it's worth pausing to recognise the amazing things this December foal, the 344th born on Woodlands Stud in 1998, has been able to achieve.

FASIG MIDLANTIC KENTUCKY COMMISSION VOTES FOR LASIX PHASE-OUT SALE TUESDAY by T.D. Thornton The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) voted unanimously Monday to phase out race-day Lasix, according to reports in Daily Racing Form and the Louisville Courier-Journal. Race-day Lasix administration is scheduled to be barred in 2-year-olds beginning in 2020, and the use of the drug will be eliminated in stakes for all ages starting in 2021. The Dec. 9 Lasix vote followed a November recommendation to adopt the phase-out by the state=s Equine Drug Research Council, which serves as an advisory board to the KHRC. The Courier-Journal noted that the KHRC is a state board that is subject to gubernatorial appointment. The monthly meeting had originally been scheduled for Dec. 10, but was moved up a day to Dec. 9, coinciding with the final day of Governor Matt Bevin=s outgoing administration.
