Sold as lot 787 from Haras de Castillon, the Castillon Bloodstock and Tina Rau Bloodstock-bred February foal was knocked down to Nicolas Lefevre of Equos Racing International and Broadhurst Agency=s Laurent Benoit for €87,000. AI have bought her in association with Laurent Benoit for a group of clients, with a view to offer her at the yearling sales,@ said Lefevre. AShe is a half-sister to a black-type winner from an interesting Quesnay family and I like Anabaa as a broodmare sire. Said Bellanger, "I grew up in the breeding industry; my parents have a small farm in the Loire Valley and I decided to make my career in the breeding industry. I worked six months in France for a small National Hunt breeder called Patrick Boiteau. You can tell that the decision to set up Arcadia Elevage has not been taken lightly and that there is definitely a desire to build a business that looks after its clients and horses to the best of its ability. "I'm feeling good and I don't regret doing it. The farm used to be a cattle farm so we did a lot of work on it. While a number of books and journals report in detail particular aspects of Australian racing and breeding, we can well and truly say that the Australian Racing Board’s 1999 vision has been achieved, and the Fact Book has established itself as a useful and reliable source of the broadest range of information relating to Australian thoroughbred racing and breeding. The facts and figures contained in the Fact Book, will speak for themselves. To breathe some life into this statistical record it is useful to briefly touch on some of the stand-out achievements that have occurred during the period under review. Bart Cummings increased his Melbourne Cup tally to 12 in 2008 with Viewed winning the great race and looked destined to further increase his holdings to 13 this year after taking all before him in the spring with Viewed winning the Caulfield Cup, and So You Think winning the Cox Plate. Faint Perfume would also go on to win the VRC Oaks, however it was the Mark Kavanagh trained Shocking who spoilt the party by taking out the 2009 Melbourne Cup. Shocking’s victory in the Melbourne Cup magnified the highs and lows of racing, with Mark Kavanagh previously tasting defeat in the Cox Plate after saddling up the well fancied Whobegotyou, then having to scratch the favorite for the VRC Derby, Shamoline Warrior on the morning of the race.

FUNCTIONS OF THE BOARD Under section 13(1) of the Thoroughbred Racing Act 1996 (NSW), the Board has the following functions: a) all the functions of the principal club for New South Wales and committee of the principal club for New South Wales under the Australian Rules of Racing, b) to control, supervise and regulate horse racing in the State, c) to initiate, develop and implement policies considered conducive to the promotion, strategic development and welfare of the horse racing industry in the State and the protection of the public interest as it relates to the horse racing industry, d) functions with respect to the insuring of participants in the horse racing industry, being functions of the kind exercised by the AJC on the commencement of this section, and such other functions with respect to insurance in the horse racing industry as may be prescribed by the regulations, e) such functions as may be conferred or imposed on the Board by or under the Australian Rules of Racing or any other Act; and f) such functions with respect to horse racing in New South Wales as may be prescribed by the regulations.

With the exception of the war years in the 20th Century, it has been an annual social and sporting highlight ever since. The race is the most prestigious local event in Hong Kong racing and offers once-in-a-lifetime glory to each winner. Since 1981, the Hong Kong Derby has been exclusive to four-year-old horses and is the race that often determines that generation’s outstanding champion. The race was established, as with all Derbys around the world, in the tradition of the original Derby, first staged at Epsom, England in 1780. The Hong Kong Derby is today the second most lucrative of all the world’s Derbys and this year’s (2019) edition offers total prize money of HK$18 million, compared to a purse of HK$30,000 when Hong Kong racing’s professional era commenced in the 1971/72 season.
