The vice president serves as a key member of the senior vice president and chief business officer’s leadership team and interacts with university leadership concerning campus planning, long-range infrastructure planning, capital construction and renovations, real estate and leasing management, and facilities operations and maintenance. ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, also known as Virginia Tech or VT, is a nationally ranked public college and one of the premier research universities in the USA. Virginia Tech offers a technologically focused education across over 280 degree programs to more than 36,000 undergraduate and graduate students in fields ranging from engineering, to science, to business. Of those 36,383 students, 81 percent are undergraduate students and 19 percent are graduate and professional students; 57 percent are male, and 43 percent are female. Virginia Tech is ranked 5th in the nation for number of engineering graduates, 46th in the nation on the National Science Foundation Rankings by Total R&D Expenditures, and manages a research portfolio of more than $531 million. In 2019, U.S. News & World Report ranked Virginia Tech number 76 among the nation's best public universities. Its consolidated operating budget for 2019-20 is $1.66 billion. Its endowment was $1.14 billion as of July 2018. The Board of Visitors is the governing authority for Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. The board has 14 members, 13 of whom are appointed by the governor. The 14th member is the president of the Board of Agriculture and Consumer Services, who serves ex officio. Virginia Tech is led by Timothy Sands, the university’s 16th president, who reports directly to the Board of Visitors. Cyril Clarke, executive vice president and provost, and Dwayne Pinkney, senior vice president and chief business officer, lead the academic and administrative areas, respectively. Leadership: Office of the President President’s Executive Staff President’s Leadership Team President’s Council Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost Office of the Senior Vice President and Chief Business Officer Virginia Tech, VPCPIF Page 2 HISTORY On October 1, 1872, Addison “Add” Caldwell walked 26 miles from Craig County to enroll as the first student at Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College. Significant academic changes in 1896 ushered in a new name more befitting the university’s higher profile — Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute, commonly known as Virginia Polytechnic Institute, VPI, or most fondly as Virginia Tech. Ever since then, Virginia Tech has been fulfilling its role as a leading land-grant university. The tiny college, originally housed in the old Olin and Preston Institute near what is now Alumni Mall, has grown into a world-class university. Virginia Tech pushes the boundaries of knowledge by taking a hands-on, transdisciplinary approach to preparing students to be leaders and problem-solvers. Virginia Tech has a rich history and many traditions. The Corps of Cadets is one of the oldest traditions. The Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets became official in the 1890s, drawing from the university’s origin in 1872 and its required military training for students. As the university changed and innovated, so did the corps. Mandated four-year participation in the corps for all males changed to two years in 1923 — the same year women were first admitted — and then participation became voluntary in 1964. Today, Virginia Tech is one of three public universities in the country with both an active corps of cadets and a “civilian” lifestyle on its campus. Virginia Tech exhibits its character and pride every day via its buildings, most of which are made of Hokie Stone, a limestone common in Southwest Virginia. It was first used in campus building construction in 1899, and today, all new central campus buildings must bear the distinctive stone. Hewed by hand and varying from grays, browns, and blacks to pinks, oranges, and maroons, no two stones are the same color. Since the mid-1950s, the university has operated its own quarry. STRATEGIC PLANNING AND STRATEGIC CHANGES The university strategic plan, The Virginia Tech Difference: Advancing Beyond Boundaries, was developed over 18 months through holistic collaboration with faculty, staff, students, alumni and university partners across colleges, institutes, offices and campuses, and shaped by partners and employers. The university strategic plan guides initial steps to achieving the long-term Beyond Boundaries future as a comprehensive research land-grant university by affirming Virginia Tech’s vision, mission, and core values; defining university priorities; and outlining goals and initial milestones to achieve each priority. It also reinforces the university's established strengths and serves as a university-level guide for colleges, institutes, offices, departments, and units as they develop their respective strategies and plans to advance institutional priorities. Virginia Tech’s vision, mission, core values, and strategic priorities are already being put into action in efforts at the university. The Strategic Affairs team worked with leadership within the Office for Inclusion and Diversity throughout this process to ensure alignment between the Office for Inclusion and Diversity's strategic planning efforts and the integration of the campus’ diversity plan within the university strategic planning framework. The Office for Strategic Affairs will continue to collaborate and partner with the Office for Inclusion and Diversity to ensure continued alignment. The Office for Strategic Affairs will continue to collaborate and partner with colleges, institutes, offices, and units in the development of unit-level strategic plans as part of the continuous planning process. Virginia Tech, VPCPIF Page 3 FUNDRAISING In October of 2019, Virginia Tech announced the most ambitious fundraising and engagement campaign in university history. Boundless Impact: The Campaign for Virginia Tech has a goal to raise $1.5 billion to fuel excellence across all university programs and drive forward major strategic priorities. A second goal is to engage 100,000 alumni in meaningful ways over the course of the campaign, which is projected to run until June 30, 2027. The campaign is expected to fuel major initiatives all across the university. These include innovative new collaborations to solve complex problems, constructing a four-building Global Business and Analytics Complex in Blacksburg, investing in cutting-edge research in health sciences to push the Health Sciences and Technology Campus in Roanoke forward, and maximizing the impact of the emerging Innovation Campus in the greater Washington, D.C., area. Other major campaign priorities are to help Virginia Tech reach its inclusion and diversity recruiting goals, which include 40 percent of the student body coming from groups that are underrepresented or underserved, and to support innovative new ways of learning through internships, collaborations, and other programs that go beyond the classroom to prepare students to thrive on transdisciplinary teams. FACULTY AND STUDENTS As the commonwealth’s most comprehensive university and a leading research institution, Virginia Tech offers more than 110 bachelor’s majors, 7 undergraduate academic colleges, more than 170 master’s and doctoral majors, a Graduate School, the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, and the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. There are additional special academic programs, including the Honors College, studying abroad through the Global Education Office, and support for international students. The university fulfills its role as a land-grant institution by fostering a collaborative environment that integrates technology into all disciplines, so that the Virginia Tech community can serve as a force for positive change around the commonwealth, the country, and the world. Through experiential learning, future-focused research, and an inclusive, spirited culture, Virginia Tech strives to accomplish the charge of its motto Ut Prosim (That I May Serve). Guiding the transformation of their students are 2,070 instructional faculty members (both full and part-time) of whom 51 percent are tenured. Historically, twenty-one faculty members have belonged to the prestigious National Academies, which advance the pursuit of science, engineering and medicine. Virginia Tech has two faculty members and one student who have risen to the rank of Fellow in the preeminent American Academy of Arts and Sciences. RESEARCH Virginia Tech is in the top 5 percent of universities in the nation for research expenditures and the only Virginia institution in the top 50 of the National Science Foundation’s annual survey of higher- ed research expenditures. The tradition began in the 1911–1912 school session when four classes (1911–1914) designed their rings. The Class of 2011 has the honor of celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Virginia Tech ring. Since the beginning, each Virginia Tech class has designed a ring distinctive and unique to its class. Today, Virginia Tech is one of only a few colleges and universities that redesign their ring collection each year. Driven by Tradition Each year, the sophomore class selects a Ring Design Committee responsible for designing and marketing their class ring collection, adding elements that reflect their class experiences on the class We Forge Ahead. side. All ring designs have an eagle and crossed sabers, usually found on the university side and symbolizing the military heritage and traditions of the Corps of Cadets. The chain links that have encircled the ring bezel on Virginia Tech rings since 1940 represent class unity, the strength of many Traditione acti, procedimus united as one. Since 1991, the design process has included the recognition of a distinguished alumnus, alumna or Class Colors: Black , Gold, and Vermillion university president. The design, collection, and the namesake are revealed to the class during the fall of their junior year at Ring Premiere. In recognizing alumnus president Dr. Charles W. Steger ‘69 and his wife, Janet Steger ‘70 as their class namesakes, the Class of 2011 celebrates the 20th anniversary of this special tradition.

HISTORIC SITES SLJRVEY VOLLJ ME 1 JULY, 1986 Montgomery County Reconnaissance Level Survey July, 1986 INTRODUCTION Since the adoption of the Comprehensive Plan in 1983, Montgomery County has experienced increased development and population growth. In light of this growth, the Planning Commission became aware of the need for a tool to help plan growth and still preserve the County's historical and architectural resources, The need to inventory these resources was evident. In 1985, Montgomery County applied and received a matching grant from the Division of Historic Landmarks to perform a Reconnaissance Level Survey of the County's architecturally significant buildings. This survey includes the following: 1) An Overview of the County's History 2) A Comprehensive Inventory of significant structures and sites in the County--including photographs and floor plans and; 3) Maps delineating the location of said structures and sites. It is anticipated that thfs survey will be a useful resource in future planning activities such as the evaluation of rezoning requests, the revision of the Comprehensive Plan and potential amendments of the County's Zoning Ordfnance to create a Historic District Overlay. Further, it will provide citizens interested in doing historical, archaeological. and genealogical research with valuable information.
