Congratulations Student Writers! Thank you to everyone who submitted a piece of artwork or writing for the Southern Lakes Anthology Contest. At Northside, we had over 45 entries! In December, a committee of teachers from different schools in the district came together and judged all the School District of Milton entries to choose the top 24 submissions to submit to the final judging in January. It was a hard decision! Northside had 6 submissions chosen to move on in the competition! •Attison Z. • Jake B.

•Brady K. • Camille D.

•Taytum A. • Ella R. Great job to all who participated! I know the judges had a hard time deciding. Keep creating art and writing pieces-- it’s never too early to start thinking about next year’s contest!

-Mrs. Nelson SOARing News… Students at Northside are SOARing through this mild winter season with a smile. Even though winter is lost and forgotten somewhere in the deep unknown, Northsiders have not forgotten how to stay Safe, Organized, Accountable, and Respectful.

Teachers everywhere are seeking out and searching for one organized student in each classroom this second quarter to be the deserving recipients of our quarterly pep rally SOAR Student Awards. It has been a tough decision for teachers, as they search desks, lockers, folders, and binders. Students at Northside are sharp and on top of it!

The Golden Plunger is about to make it's appearance at Northside. Students throughout the building will be competing for the cleanest wing bathroom in order to have bragging rights for the finely decorated and highly sought-after toilet plunger that will take it's throne above the wing sink. Students will check twice before leaving the bathroom, making sure to flush, get their paper towel in the trash, and pick up after themselves. Let the competition begin!

Remember, outfits should be appropriate for Wisconsin weather and follow the dress code (including no masks, no face paint or hair paint). The next spirit day is “Sports Day” on Thursday, January 14. Students and staff can have fun wearing clothes that represent their favorite sport, athlete, or team!

PENNY WAR:

Student Council will hold a school-wide Penny War at the end of January from the 25th to the 29th. We will be raising money for the Milton Public Library’s expansion efforts related to children and teen programming.

The Rules: The war will be between the different wings at Northside. Silver coins and paper money will add to a wing’s total amount. Pennies subtract from a wing’s total, so pennies should be placed in a wing’s jar that you do not want to win. The wing that has the most money at the end will win a prize!

UPCOMING EVENTS: The Council has the following events planned for the school year: a Penny War fundraiser at the end of January, submitting Box Tops, Campbell’s Labels for Education, and Milk Moola, the Spring Read In, and 3rd grade visits. Watch for more information about these events in future newsletters.

Miss Cerny’s Team Santa narrowly defeated Da Bulls from Mrs. La Bansky’s class in double sudden-death overtime during the Battle of the Books for the 200 wing 4th grade on December 16th. They were followed by the Reading Rudolfs from Mrs. Karcher’s class and the Readacorns from Mrs. Smith’s class. In the Battle of the Books program students read 5 titles in about 10 weeks. The books are chosen by their teachers and are a combination of genres and reading levels. Each classroom is divided into teams and at the end of 10 weeks they meet in a room battle which determines which team will represent the room in the wing battle. The “battle” consists of the teams answering questions from Mr. Smith the librarian. Each correct question earns the team 10 points and the team with the most points represents the class in the wing battle. Team Santa members were Caleb B., Jasmine K., Heidi K., Emma J., Chance A., and Holly M. Da Bulls were Cayden E., Sage G., Iselin H., Landen S., Kyle C., and Issac F. The Reading Rudolfs were Lucas H., Jordan B., Ashton J., Carissa C., Damari J., and Kaylee W., and the Readacorns were Zoey D., James P., Logan S., Carson K., and Paiten H. Congratulations to all on a job well done.

SOARing into Winter at Northside It’s that time of year when temperatures drop and the snow flies. With the change in temperatures we have a corresponding change in wardrobes and outside activities. What remains the same is the expectation that students at Northside will continue to SOAR. Here are a few tips to help our Northsiders SOAR into Winter.

Safe • Stay off the ice • Stay on the blacktop if you don’t have boots • Sled safely, face forward, feet first and solo. • Stay out of the way of downhill sledders

Organized • Only walk on the right going up the sled hill. • Put coats, hats, scarves, gloves, boots, snow pants in your locker and not on the floor.

Accountable • Dress for the weather in proper clothing. • Keep track of playground equipment. • Put students names in clothing with waterproof marker so we can identify lost items of clothing and reduce the amount of unclaimed clothes on the lost and found table, unless you are independently wealthy and enjoy support the local clothing banks!

Respectful • Do not throw snow. Leave it on the ground, it’s happier there. • Invite others to play. • Preserve snow sculptures and structures. • Stay out of slush puddles. • “0” voices in line to come in.

We had a very positive 1st Fall Quarter and month of December. We’re looking forward to the remainder of winter with the students!

Martin Luther King Jr. Day- January 18

Martin Luther King Jr. was a leader of the American civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s. Before his assassination in 1968, he received the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to use nonviolent resistance to achieve equality for African Americans. His efforts contributed to passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

We celebrate diversity here at Northside and will be working to learn more about Martin Luther King Jr. and his contributions to our country through literature, current events publications, and our social studies curriculum. The following is from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (www.dpi.state.wi.us):

“Wisconsin's 21special observance days are part of state statutes governing general school operations (Wis. Stats. 118.02). Federal law has moved the celebration of many legal holidays to Monday, however, state law recommends that each Wisconsin Special Observance Day be held on the day itself. When an observance day falls on a Saturday or Sunday during the school year, it should be observed on the preceding Friday or the following Monday.

Honoring observance days can teach the elements of tradition that preserve U.S. society and foster an awareness of our cultural heritage. Observance days can be part of a rich social studies curriculum that gives these individuals and events proper emphasis, both in the context of Wisconsin and U.S. history and in relation to their effect on or improvement of our political, economic, and social institutions.”

Thank You Friends of Northside for a Fun Holiday Social!
