2010 Mike Burchuk Award (Female MVP)

During the 1970’s Mike Burchuk helped establish the volleyball program in Selkirk by leading several junior and senior high school teams to suburban provincial championships. While coaching at the University of Winnipeg from 1980 to 1989, Mike led the Wesmen to the amazing feat of 6 consecutive CIAU national titles. He was honoured four times as CIAU Coach of the Year and six times as GPAC Coach of the Year. Mike was assistant coach at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics prior to being named head coach of the Women’s National Team in 1989. Under Mike’s guidance, Team Canada fought for their first ever Pan American Games bronze medal in 1995 in Argentina and then onto Canada’s first Olympic win at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. In recognition of his coaching efforts during the past three decades, Mike Burchuk was inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame in 1999 and to the Manitoba Volleyball Association Hall of Fame in 2001.

The winner of the 2010 Mike Burchuk Award is Taylor Pischke.

At 6’1”, Taylor was captain of her Fort Richmond Centurions for the duration of her high school career; with an outstanding volleyball resume, she brought experience and leadership to the FRC floor. Taylor is a dynamic athlete who demands the best from herself at all time and who consistently plays at a high level, domination statistically in all categories. her vision and knowledge of the game is invaluable. She is encouraging to her team mates to bring their best to the court for every point. Off the court, Taylor is an exemplary student, maintaining a +90% average, is a apart of the Student Leadership program and spends her ‘extra’ time volunteering at Victoria Hospital. With achievements across a wide range of sports that include Provincial, National and Canada Games gold medals, Taylor was also the top pick in the 2010 Winnipeg Sun Top Ten List. Congratulations Taylor! 2010 Dennis Nord Award (Male MVP)

Dennis Nord has enjoyed numerous successes as a player, coach and administrator. As a captain of the Vincent Massey Trojans, he led his team to the first two MHSAA Championships in 1962 and 1963. He later went on to captain Team Manitoba to two National Junior Championships and the University of Winnipeg to their first CIAU Championship in 1967-68. His coaching credits include representing Manitoba at three Canada Games and two National Junior Championships, winning three gold medals and two silver medals respectively. During the 1999 Pan American Games, he was the chairperson for both indoor and .

The Winner of the 2010 Dennis Nord Award is Josh Crellin

The two words that continue to pop up in the talks about Josh Crellin are ‘BIG BLOCK’. At 6’7”, Josh dominated the net and imposed sheer intimidation on his opponents who were given the task of attacking against him. Moving from middle to the right side part way through the season, Josh continued to be a strong force in the Selkirk attack from the front and back rows of the court. Josh is a leader with a remarkably strong work ethic that is encouraging to his teammates; he is an active member of the Sports Leadership Team and maintains a mid 90% average in school. Josh was listed as #8 in the 2010 Winnipeg Sun Top Ten List. Congratulations Josh! (Jim Schreyer accepting for Josh Crellin) 2010 GRADUATING ALL STAR MATCHES
