Penn Conference Notes: ALA Midwinter - So You Want to Podcast…

Should our libraries do a podcast? Podcasts can be library related or more general & are often in a series. Take conversations we would have in the library to a broader audience. Podcasting increased, then decreased and it is now on the rise. The stories have to be for you first as the audience knows whether or not you are passionate about what you are talking about. Develop the content first before you record. Book talks can work on the fly and having a co-host is a fantastic way to showcase new works. Having guests on podcasts are great. You can do whatever you want in your podcast. Writing to be heard is not the same as writing to be read. Frequency varies to scheduled times of once or twice a month to whenever you can. Don’t forget to edit your podcast. Length of a podcast can vary from 9-12 minutes or 25-30 minutes when you have guests. You can do a podcast right on your phone. Hosting your podcast: Spotify, Soundcloud, iTunes & then embed these links in your newsletters, website etc. Statistics are great but your measurement on success should be the fact that your numbers are increasing. Keep in mind these statistics are not as accurate as people could share the podcast or download it more than once.

PNLA – Podcasts Get Lit Connect with library members where they are. Firm up your Podcast plan. Need to figure out what you will do to make the podcast standout. Zencastr for interviewers with authors who cannot come to the library. LibSyn used for the host. When writing for the show you need to know your persona, create an outline &/or notes and then read it out loud before the recording stage. Providing show notes gives people an alternative form to access your podcast, a reference point for listeners plus additional or background information. Places to market a Podcast: library blog, newsletter, social media, paid advertising on social media and cross promotion by appearing on another people’s podcast. “Out on the Wire” a GRN book was recommended

Subject: Lightening talk from PNLA - TV Whitespace (TVWS) wireless technology ATTN: Kelly & Jake 42593

Good day, Here is the information regarding the lightening talk I mentioned from the 2019 PNLA Conference. Outreach via TV Whitespace Networks This lighting talk will report on the use of TV Whitespace (TVWS) wireless technology to engage in immigrant outreach, access, and inclusion in Huron, South Dakota. TV Whitespace (TVWS) represents an emerging, low-cost wireless technology that has the potential of expanding rural libraries' abilities to extend their Wi- signals beyond the building and beyond library hours to public spaces such as subsidized housing, schools, clinics, museums, senior centers, and other community anchor institutions. The public library in Huron was part of an IMLS-funded project to implement TVWS-enabled wireless networks with the goal of designing programs and services for Karen and LatinX immigrants. Discussion will focus on the details of the site and current efforts to document their project involvement. Presenters:

• Ellie Dworak - Information Design & Data Visualization Librarian, Boise State University • Julie Niederhauser - Public Library Coordinator, Alaska State Library

Penn Good day, I am willing and able to do the following sessions at the upcoming NLLS conference: Collection Maintenance This presentation is designed to help library staff grow and maintain a healthy collection that responds to the local needs of teachers and students alike. A review of the library collection plays a vital role in keeping a collection active and relevant. Makerspace Collections What is a makerspace collection? How do they circulate? Why add them to your collection? We want to jump right in, purchase everything and try it all. But when building the collection, we found the best course of action was to slow our pace down and start with a few types. In this presentation we will share some ideas on how to start, cataloguing, tracking kit pieces, plus how to tailor it to your library member’s needs and your plan of service. Grants in Your Libraries – joint presentation with Tracy Woloshyniuk Are you perplexed by the grant application process? Would you like to give your grant applications an edge? In this session, we will share tips and tricks that have aided our libraries to rise above the other applicants to receive funding. Behind any successful fundraising project, is relationship building. Find the resources needed, and match your programming needs to their funding interests. Biography Maureen Penn has worked primarily in public and school libraries since graduating from the University of Western Ontario in 1992.
