Introduction The sub-order Plesiosauria is one of the best known of the Mesozoic Reptile groups, but, as emphasized by KuHN (1961, p. 75) and other authors, its classification is still not satisfactory, and needs a thorough revision. The present paper is an attempt at such a revision, and includes also a tabular synopsis of the stratigraphical and geo graphical distribution of the group. Some of the species are discussed in the text (pp. 17-22). The synopsis is completed with seven maps (figs. 2-8, pp. 10-16), a selective synonym list (pp. 41-42), and a list of rejected species (pp. 42-43). Some forms which have been erroneously referred to the Plesiosauria are also briefly mentioned ("Non-Plesiosaurians", p. 43). - The numerals in braekets after the generic and specific names in the text refer to the tabular synopsis, in which the different forms are numbered in successional order. The author has exaroined all material available from Sweden, Australia and Spitzbergen (PERSSON 1954, 1959, 1960, 1962, 1962a); the major part of the material from the British Isles, France, Belgium and Luxembourg; some of the German spec imens; certain specimens from New Zealand, now in the British Museum (see LYDEK KER 1889, pp. -

Bd. 108 S. 1—114 Wien, Juni 1965 Die Allgäu-Schichten (Jura-Fleckenmergel) zwischen Wettersteingebirge und Rhein Von Volker JACOBSHAGEN (Marburg/Lahn) *) (Mit 3 Abbildungen, 2 Tabellen, 5 Phototafeln und 8 Tafeln) Zusammenfassung In den Nördlichen Kalkalpen westlich vom Wetterstein-Gebirge wurden die Allgäu- Schichten (Jura-Fleckenmergel) nach dem Vorwiegen kalkiger oder mergeliger Gesteine durchweg in drei Abteilungen gegliedert: A. Ältere Allgäu-Schichten (Unter- bis Mittellias), kalkreich. B. Mittlere Allgäu-Schichten (unterer Oberlias), mergelreioh. C. Jüngere Allgäu-Schichten (oberer Oberlias und Dogger), kalkreich. Diese Abteilungen konnten gebietsweise jedoch noch in mehrere Gruppen unterteilt werden. Die in der Schichtfolge beobachteten Faziestypen werden kurz charakterisiert und genetisch gedeutet. Nach Mächtigkeits- und Fazies-Verteilung wird dann ein paläo- geographischer Überblick für die einzelnen Abteilungen entworfen. Fragen der Groß- tektonik, unter anderem das Problem Deckenbau oder gebundene Tektonik, können daran überprüft werden. Abstract: Substantial numbers of the nautilid Cenoceras occur in a stratigraphically limited horizon within the upper part of the Lower Jurassic (Sinemurian Stage) Blue Lias Formation at Watchet on the West Somerset Coast (United Kingdom). Individual nautilid conchs are associated with clusters of encrusting organisms (sclerobionts) forming ‘islands’ that may have been raised slightly above the surrounding substrate. Despite the relatively large numbers of nautilid conchs involved, detailed investigation of their preservation suggests that their accumulation reflects a reduction in sedimentation rates rather than an influx of empty conches or moribund animals. Throughout those horizons in which nautilids are present in relative abundance, the remains of ammonites are subordinate or rare. The reason for this unclear, and preferential dissolution of ammonite conchs during their burial does seem to provide a satisfactory solution to the problem. -

B, Nr. 65 The more important species to which a lectotype has herein been designated and figured are Acanthopleuroceras maugenesti (d'Orb.) and Coeloceras grenouillouxi (d'Orb.). The holotype oi Platypleu- roceras brevispina, a fragment of three successive whorls, is described in detail for the first time. The ranges of described ammonites are presented in Table 2. The early appearance of Zetoceras and Lytoceras, and the occurence of Crucilobiceras, Microderoceras, and Jamesonites are notable. The first evidence of the Liparoceratid family occurs in the upper part of the taylori Subzone. Resume La subdivision biostratigraphique du Pliensbachien inferieur a ete etudiee dans son stratotype a Pliensbach (arrondissement de Göppingen, Wurtemberg). Deux coupes supplementaires de la region- type, Celles de Nürtingen et de Holzmaden, ont ete prises egalement en consideration. Le Schema de subdivision en zones et sous-zones elabore par Dean et al. (1961) pour la province liasique de l'Europe du NW peut etre applique ä la serie marnocalcaire, epaisse de 9 a 12,5 m, de la region-type. La seule restriction importante est la position de la sous-zone a Masseanum, si on se refere ä la definition de la zone ä Jamesoni par Oppel (1856). Les premiers representants du genre Tropidoceras se trouvent ensemble avec des Uptonia. II faut en conclure que la sous-zone ä Masseanum est la sous-zone superieure de la zone ä Jamesoni. -

Saxoceras tectosimile n. sp. steht auf Grund der Gchäuse- morphologie und der Lobenlinic nahe bei Schlotheimia angulata. Die bei Saxoceras protero- gcnctisch angelegte, Schlotheimia-artige Skulp tur hat sich bei Sax. tectosimile gegenüber Sax. praecursor weiter auf die Außenwindungen ver lagert, so daß die Bntwicklungslücke zwischen Saxoceras und Schlotheimia s. str. als geschlossen angesehen werden kann. Die Ausgestaltung der Jugendwindungen von Sax. tectosimile deutet auf bestimmte, bei Storthoceras s. str. und Gonio- ptychoceras zu suchende Ausgangsformen. Eine von Lange vermutete hcterochronc Entwick lung von Schlotheimia kann nicht bestätigt werden. A bstract: The genus Saxoceras which so far has bcen known only from the German Facies Provincc was reccntly found in the Mediterranian Facies Province at a locality on the Fonsjoch mountain (Northern Alps). The shell morphology and the suture linc of Saxoceras tectosimile n. sp. appear to bc related to those of Schlotheimia angulata. As is well known, Saxoceras forms a proterogenetical sculpturc which is similar to Schlotheimia. This sculpturc is also found in Saxoceras tectosimile; however, in comparison to Saxoceras praecursor, it appear s to be displaced towards the external whorls. As it rcsults from the observation, the evolutionary gap between Saxoceras and Schlothetmrn s. str. can now bc considered closed. The charactcristics found on the juvenile whorls of Sax.
