Najib, Marina and Sanusi make it DEPUTY Ministers Datuk Najib Razak (Education) and Encik Sanusi Junid (Home Affairs), and lawyer Puan Marina Yusuf, were elected to the 20-member Umno Supreme Council yesterday for the first time. Those who were previously ap- pointed members and who were elected this time are Deputy Fede- ral Territory Minister Kneik Abdullah Alunad, Pahang Mentri Besar Haji Abdul Rahim Abu Ba- kar and Malacca Chief Minister Encik Adib Adam. Let smart people rise in politics, says Mahathir MalaysiaKini.com Sept 25, 2013 By Lawrence Yong Political party leaders should not overstay their welcome but instead encourage young people, who are smarter than them to rise up the ranks, Umno's longest-serving former president said today. Without referring to any party, Dr Mahathir Mohamad said that, if leaders are afraid of their intelligent underlings, that party would become "a stupid party" over time and lose its standing. "We must accept that it is a good thing that more intelligent people join the party and leadership quality will improve over time - or you will have more and more stupid people," Mahathir told some 600 youths at a talk at the International Youth Centre. He explained the problem in detail. "Those at the lowest ranks don't like anybody more intelligent than them. They think the best thing to do is to stop intelligent people from coming in... "Only people more stupid than them can come into the party... so, over time, when the leaders die, the leadership becomes stupider." Mahathir also dished out two pieces of timely advice, possibly aimed at next month's Umno elections, where six people are contesting for three posts of vice-president, five are battling for the Youth chief's post and three for the position of Wanita chief. Re- Mahathirisation refers to the increase in attachment towards the legacy of Malaysia's fourth Prime Minister, Dr. Mahathir Mohamad (1981–2003). Transpiring not long after Mahathir's relinquishment of official power, the process was seen as approaching a peak with BN-UMNO's campaign for the 13th General Elections (GE13) of May 2013. It was orchestrated especially by conservative elements in UMNO disillusioned with the political liberalisation began by his successor Abdullah Ahmad Badawi (2003–2009) and continued by Najib Razak. In line with an understanding of conservatism as characterised by resistance against radical change and by admiration of past values, re- Mahathirisation was employed by the BN-UMNO regime during the GE13 hustings to court the large pool of conservative-minded Malay voters. The successful dislodging of Abdullah Badawi from the party-cum-national leadership in 2009 signified a powerful return of Mahathirism to the foreground of UMNO and national politics. Although Najib Razak has pursued Abdullah's political liberalisation initiatives, he felt compelled to tolerate a rising public presence of Mahathir.

UMNO Factionalism and The Politics Of Malaysian National Identity JAE HYON LEE This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of Murdoch University 2005 I declare that this thesis is my own account of my research and contains as its main content work which has not previously been submitted for a degree at any tertiary education institution. .................................. Abstract This thesis analyses UMNO factionalism from the perspective of the elite’s manipulation of the various modes of nationalisms. This thesis argues that UMNO factionalism, which is seemingly a power struggle between competing UMNO elites, has been significantly shaped by contesting nationalist ideologies that reflect the unresolved questions of national identity in Malaysia. These two issues, that is, nationalism and UMNO factionalism, have shaped Malaysian politics in significant ways. UMNO factionalism has been related to such major political events as the 1969 ethnic riots, the introduction of the New Economic Policy, the UMNO split in 1987 and the Reformasi (Reform) movement in 1998. Frequently, the impact of these disputes extended beyond UMNO politics and affected wider Malaysian politics. At the same time, due to unresolved questions of national identity, nationalism has occupied a central position in Malaysian political discourse. There are ambiguities regarding the relationships among the various ethnic identities and national identity and between the individual and the larger Malaysian community that enable elites to construct and manipulate nationalist ideologies. In this thesis, the conflicting nationalisms are captured by five different concepts of nationalism – ethnocultural, civic and multicultural nationalisms in one group and collectivist-authoritarian and individualistic-libertarian nationalisms in another.

In the early hours of Septem- ber 4, the Supreme Council of the ruling party, United Malays National Organization (UMNO), decided to expel Anwar, who was the party’s deputy president. Anwar’s dismissal occasioned an enor- mous shock that was aggravated by immediate media revelations of tawdry allegations against Anwar, his subsequent prosecutions, his controversial convictions, and the shabby treatment of Anwar’s sup- porters and opposition groups, whether by police, media, or electoral methods, which continues to this day.
