Grandmasters Lacrosse “Legends in Their Own Minds”

The lacrosse traditions at Middlebury and Bowdoin are grounded deeply in the athletic cultures of both . Post season play began in the early 1970’s, when Bowdoin’s coach Mort LaPointe, and Middlebury coach, Rob Pfeiffer, petitioned the Eastern College Athletic Conference to sponsor a regional ECAC Division III tournament. Over time, the Small College Athletic Conference began to allow NCAA post season play, and NESCAC teams began to qualify and compete for the national championship. Year after year, Middlebury and Bowdoin teams continue to play at the highest level, and the programs are among the most well established and respected in the country.

Long after graduation, the Bowdoin and Middlebury players continue to cross paths on the lacrosse field. Some players coach against each other, while others play annually in , Florida, or Colorado. The Bowdoin Grandmasters first squared off and beat the Middlebury “gray beards” on their way to winning the 2002 Vail Shootout. The teams met for a second time in 2006 with Middlebury coming away with the victory. With the series tied at 1-1, the teams play once again to write another chapter in the history of this long storied New England rivalry.

Today, the Middlebury College Grandmasters play to honor the memory of National and New England Hall of Fame Honoree, Peter Myron Gutman Kohn, the beloved longstanding field manager of the Middlebury Lacrosse team.

During the post game reception, a lacrosse stick from the first game played at Middlebury will be donated to the college in honor of all past and present Middlebury players that continue to love the game of lacrosse.

All the Grandmasters would like to thank Middlebury’s Eric Kemp, Bob Sideli, and Bowdoin’s Dave Barker for creating the opportunity to play. Both teams appreciate the support of the Middlebury and Bowdoin athletic departments and wish Tom McCabe and Dave Campbell well as the varsity teams compete this afternoon.
