The Star-Spangled Banner Oh, say can you see by the dawn’s early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

As many colleges have extended decision dates this year, some members of the Class of 2020 are still deciding which university they will attend. Therefore, we have decided not to publi- cize, at this time, the individual university placements. As of May 14, 2020, this list includes most, but not all students’ college matriculation plans.

The history of academic dress reaches far back into the early days of the oldest universities. A statute of the Uni- versity of Coimbra, Portugal, in 1321 required that all “Doctors, Licentiates, and Bachelors” wear gowns, and in England in the second half of the fourteenth century, statutes of some of the colleges forbade “excess in apparel” and prescribed the wearing of long gowns. The unheated buildings of the medieval scholars and the tonsured heads of many clerics undoubtedly contributed to the development of the hood which (like the monk’s cowl) was designed simply to keep the head warm. Such a functional hood was superseded eventually by the skullcap.

European institutions continued to show a diversity in academic dress, but American colleges and universities in 1895 agreed to a standard style and form to be used all over the country. Subsequently, in 1932 and again in 1959, this academic code has been revised and appropriate colors and styles prescribed. There are three types of gowns: the bachelor’s, the master’s, and the doctor’s. These are differentiated mainly by the cut of the sleeves and the velvet trimming on the doctor’s gown. Hoods, corresponding to each of the degrees, also differ in length, size of trimming, and their shape. The color of the velvet band around the hood designates the subject field of the degree; the width of the velvet band denotes the level of the degree; the two-color silk lining of the interior of the hood conforms to the school colors of the university which granted the degree.

In today’s commencement, the faculty is wearing the colors of and representing the following colleges and universities: Azusa Pacific University; Bemidji State University; Berkeley Graduate Theological Union; Butler University; Caldas University; California Institute of Technology; California Institute of the Arts; California Polytechnic State University, Pomona; California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo; California State University, Dominguez Hills; California State University, Long Beach; California State University, Los Angeles; California State University, Northridge; Chapman University; Claremont Graduate School; Columbia University; D’Youville College; Georgetown University; Indiana University, Bloomington; Jesuit School of Theology, Boston; La Roche College; Long Island University; Loyola Marymount University; Loyola University of Chicago; Mt. St. Mary’s College; National University, Los Angeles; New York University; Northwestern University; Pratt Institute; San Jose State University; Santa Clara University; St. Mary’s College of California; St. Olaf College; University of California, Berkeley; University of California, Irvine; University of California, Los Angeles; University of California, Riverside; University of California, San Diego; University of Iowa; University of Kansas; University of La Verne; University of Maine; University of Miami; University of San Francisco; University of Southern California; University of Virginia; Villanova University; Whittier College School of Law.

The Shield of Loyola High School of Los Angeles

The seal of Loyola High School represents the lineage of St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the , along with an “L” in the top right corner of the seal, representing the school itself. The seal first appeared on campus in the stained glass door at the entrance to Ruppert Hall, dedicated in 1926. The seal combines the two family bearings brought together in the 1261 marriage of Beltrán Ibáñez de Oñaz, the lord of Loyola, and Marina Sánchez de Licona. The Loyola bearing, on the bottom right of the seal, depicts two wolves feeding from a cauldron, referencing a long-ago famine in the Basque highlands in which the Loyola family fed even the starving animals of the surrounding forests. The familial representations of the wolf (lobo) and cauldron (olla) developed into the name of Loyola (lobo y olla). The Oñaz bearing, the bars on the left of the seal, represent the heroic brothers of the Oñaz family, who distinguished themselves in battle. The cardinal and gold included in the seal are the Oñaz family colors, while the navy blue of the L and the blue and white stripes on the left are Loyola High School’s traditional colors.
