Dean's Message A the summer has slowed things down a little and given us time to reflect, I find myself pleased with the CLA's progress this year. With state higher education funding finally stabilizing, we have been able to hire 12 new colleagues, move forward on two exciting new initiatives, and, perhaps most encouraging, to plan in a more predictable way for our future well being. Our new hires will strengthen a number of departments hardest hit by the substantial budget reductions of the last several years: Art and Design, English, Graphic Communication, Modern Languages and Literatures, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology and Child Development, and Social Sciences. And, we look forward to the successful recruitment of at least 18 more new colleagues during the coming academic year. These Linda H. Halisky, Interim Dean will address faculty shortfalls in additional departments: Ethnic Studies, History, Journalism, and Music. With the welcome support and assistance of Interim Provost Detweiler and President Baker-and through the Herculean efforts of a number of the CLA faculty and staff-we received university wide approval for a new major in Comparative Ethnic Studies this spring. It has been exceptionally gratifying to watch plans come together for this long-awaited major and to receive such strong and broadly based support from many campus constituencies. In collaboration with Student Affairs and the University Diversity Enhancement Council, the CLA also moved forward on a First Generation Initiative aimed at developing campus-wide understanding of the particular needs of the increasingly large percentage of our student body, who are the first in their families to attend college. Plans are in place to build upon this good start during the upcoming year. Additional plans for next year include the start-up of two new programs: our newly approved Institute for Policy Research and the recently approved master's degree program in History. We are also looking forward to planning and inaugurating the first phases of a multifaceted interdisciplinary Center for Latin American Studies. With the sturdy assistance of our interim associate dean, Debra Valencia-Laver, and the continuing and able support of the CLA staff, I look forward to the challenges and triumphs of the coming year. hes to all of you. \ - . Myb~'lj.~~ II KcPR 91.3 FM has ranked with some of the most successful programs endorsed over the years by the university. The station's contributions go far beyond the boundaries of the campus and its potential is ever evolving. Cal Poly Radio boasts famous alumni, is recognized as one of the top 50 college-format radio stations in the nation, and represents the very best of the learn-by-doing philosophy. But in recent years the station has fallen into disrepair, as both the facility and the technology have become inadequate for a growing Journalism Department and demanding, more tech-savvy students. Indeed, KCPR has come to need some C.P.R., but exciting developments have infused it with a new energy and attitude. Capitalizing on a longtime, amicable working relationship with ClearChannel and its local AM affiliate, KCPR' s broadcast signal will soon be its strongest ever. Preparations are underway to move the station antenna and transmitter from their current location on nearby Radio Hill to Cuesta Peak (atop Cuesta Grade-perching the tower almost 2,100 feet higher), which will enable KCPR to be heard throughout San Luis Obispo County and into northern Santa Barbara County. The result will certainly expand the station's potential audience. More importandy, it will present an opportunity to expand programming to reflect and serve the diversity of those new communities being reached. KCPR is positioning itself to become a community resource prized for eclectic programming. Even more exciting is the bold initiative to build new studios and office space for the station, which is being undertaken by the Journalism Department with generous assistance from the College of Liberal Arts and the Cal Poly Provost's Office. Sometime in 2006, KCPR will move from the second to the third floor of the Graphic Arts Building, to be located adjacent to the recently renovated CPTV television studio. The new location will enable the two broadcasting units to combine efforts to produce compelling, live, broadcast-quality news, and talk and entertainment programs, as well as accommodate the station's growing popularity and contemporary needs. An equally ambitious fund, raising initiative for technology purchases is currently underway, with former deejays and current friends of KCPR coming through in fine style. Things are literally looking up for KCPR, with the relocation of the antenna to a taller peak and, as the station readies to take itself to a higher level-both physically in terms of a new station on the third floor and programmatically for anyone who makes their way to 91.3 on the FM dial. Raffa: Dante's Political Life Bibliotheca Dantesca, 3 (2020): 1-25 DANTE’S POLITICAL LIFE GUY P. RAFFA, The University of Texas at Austin The approach of the seven-hundredth anniversary of Dante’s death is a propi- tious time to recall the events that drove him from his native Florence and marked his life in various Italian cities before he found his final refuge in Ra- venna, where he died and was buried in 1321. Drawing on early chronicles and biographies, modern historical research and biographical criticism, and the poet’s own writings, I construct this narrative of “Dante’s Political Life” for the milestone commemoration of his death. The poet’s politically-motivated exile, this biographical essay shows, was destined to become one of the world’s most fortunate misfortunes. Keywords: Dante, Exile, Florence, Biography The proliferation of biographical and historical scholarship on Dante in recent years, after a relative paucity of such work through much of the twentieth century, prompted a welcome cluster of re- flections on this critical genre in a recent volume of Dante Studies.

P ARK HOUSE STABLES SUMMER MAGAZINE 2019 INTRODUCTION P ARK HOUSE STABLES orse racing has always been unpredictable and in many ways that is part of its attraction. It can provide fantastic high H points but then have the opposite effect on one’s emotions a moment later. Saturday 13 July was one of those days. Having enjoyed the thrill of watching Pivoine win one of the season’s most important handicaps, closely followed by Beat The Bank battling back to win a second Summer Mile, the ecstasy of victory was replaced in a split second by a feeling of total horror with Beat The Bank suffering what could immediately be seen to be an awful injury. Whilst winning races is important to everyone at Kingsclere, the vast majority of people who work in racing do it because they love horses and there is nothing more cruel in this sport than losing a horse, whether it be on the gallops or on the racecourse. Beat The Above: Ernie (Meg Armes) is judged Best Puppy at the Kingsclere Dog Show Bank was a wonderful racehorse and a great character and will be remembered with huge affection by everyone at Park House. King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Sponsored by QIPCO) Ascot Racecourse Background Information for the 65th Running Saturday, July 25, 2015 Winners of the Investec Derby going on to the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Sponsored by QIPCO) Unbeaten Golden Horn, whose victories this year include the Investec Derby and the Coral-Eclipse, will try to become the 14th Derby winner to go on to success in Ascot’s midsummer highlight, the Group One King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Sponsored by QIPCO), in the same year and the first since Galileo in 2001. Britain's premier all-aged 12-furlong contest, worth a boosted £1.215 million this year, takes place at 3.50pm on Saturday, July 25. Golden Horn extended his perfect record to five races on July 4 in the 10-furlong Group One Coral- Eclipse at Sandown Park, beating older opponents for the first time in great style. The three-year-old Cape Cross colt, owned by breeder Anthony Oppenheimer and trained by John Gosden in Newmarket, captured Britain's premier Classic, the Investec Derby, over 12 furlongs at Epsom Downs impressively on June 6 after being supplemented following a runaway Betfred Dante Stakes success at York in May. If successful at Ascot on July 25, Golden Horn would also become the fourth horse capture the Derby, Eclipse and King George in the same year. ËËË Three horses have completed the Derby/Eclipse/King George treble in the same year - Nashwan (1989), Mill Reef (1971) and Tulyar (1952). ËËË The 2001 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes saw Galileo become the first Derby winner at Epsom Downs to win the Ascot contest since Lammtarra in 1995.
