ARMSTRONGS IN LINE FOR PROFITABLE SALE ALKUMAIT BEST IN By Alayna Cullen THE There is a general feeling of relief this year that the yearling sales are taking place at all. While some of the key indices are down on previous years there is comfort to be in the strong clearance rates experienced at the sales thus far and even more comfort to be taken by some of the results pinhookers have had from their investments of 2019. For siblings Chris and Tara Armstrong this year could be one of the more memorable ones for their young pinhooking operation from Beechvale Stud. At the upcoming Ireland September Yearling Sale they offer two yearling colts. The first is lot 107, a son of Profitable (Ire) whose first crop has been well received in the ring. The second is lot 222, who has arguably received one of the best pedigree updates since catalogue was printed. LAZULI SWOOPS FOR TROPHY SUCCESS Still relatively unexposed as a sprinter, Godolphin=s Lazuli (Ire) ( {Ire}) put two defeats behind him when capturing Saturday=s five-furlong G3 Dubai International Airport World Trophy at Newbury. ELARQAM RETURNS TO WINNING WAYS So close to getting his Group 1 when in his pomp last summer, Shadwell=s Elarqam (GB) (Frankel {GB}) had fallen out of sorts of late but clicked back into gear with a game win in Saturday=s G3 Dubai Duty Free Legacy Cup at Newbury. Rested since finishing sixth in the July 25 G2 York S., the 2-1 second favourite was sent to the front from the outset by Jim Crowley and set an honest tempo. Briefly headed by Gifts of Gold (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) inside the final three furlongs, the homebred proved too tough for that rival and for the latecomer Desert Encounter (Ire) (Halling) who he held by 1 1/2 lengths at the line. AIt was lovely to see him battle there and he=s a much better horse on top of the ground,@ Crowley said. AHe got his own way out in front and he enjoyed it and when the other horse headed him it helped him and gave him something to aim at. He=s been highly- tried and has plenty of ability. It=s good to see him back on track.@

Third and possibly unlucky in the 2019 G1 Juddmonte International S., Elarqam had flopped when subsequently seventh in the G1 Irish S. at Leopardstown last September but returned from a winter=s break to run the subsequent G1 Prince of Wales=s S. hero Lord North (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) to a short head in the G3 S. also over a mile and a quarter at Haydock on June 7. Only sixth trying 12 furlongs in the G2 Hardwicke S. at Royal Ascot on June 19, the bay was favourite for the York S. but folded relatively tamely so questions were hanging over him ahead of this re- introduction. AIf you look at his form last year, you would have said he should be winning a Group 1 this year and unfortunately it hasn=t fallen his way,@ trainer Mark Johnston said. AWe were running out of opportunities and that is why we came here, as there wasn=t really anywhere else to go. Pedigree Notes: WALLER RIDES CREST OF A WAVE Behemoth was originally purchased out of Tyreel Stud=s draft at the Inglis Great Southern Sale for $120,000 by Heritage Bloodstock and then secured by Grand Syndicates for just $6000 at the Gold Coast National Yearling Sale where he was offered by Riversdale Stud. They were willing to be forgiving for less than satisfactory x-ray reports and Behemoth has rewarded their approach with stake earnings now in excess of $1.6 million. He is a son of the Listed Schweppervescence S. winner Penny Banger (Zedrich) and she is a half-sister to the stakes winner and G1 WATC Derby placegetter Mister Mix (Surtee).

STARSHIP JUBILEE SELECTIVE MARKET PREVAILS AS BOOK 3 CONCLUDES AT KEENELAND by Jessica Martini BEATS THE BOYS LEXINGTON, KY - Bidding continued to be solid for the lots, but the market was increasingly polarized as the second IN WOODBINE MILE and final Book 3 session concluded Saturday in Lexington. Trainer Bob Baffert and Donato Lanni purchased the day=s highest-priced offering, going to $450,000 to acquire a colt from the first crop of Unified on behalf of Mike Pegram, Paul Weitman, and Karl Watson. During Saturday=s session, 239 horses sold for $18,364,200. The average was $76,838 and the median was $52,000. With 110 horses reported not sold, the buy-back rate was 31.52%Bthe lowest session buy-back rate of the sale so far. Through the two sessions of Book 3, 439 yearlings sold for $40,167,700. The average was $91,498 and the median was $65,000. Just one horse topped the $500,000 mark--Friday=s session-topping $625,000 son of Into Mischief--during the book. Overtaking War of Will entering the final sixteenth, the 7-year-old mare forged clear to win by a length. AJust an unbelievable feeling,@ said Kevin Attard. AThis mare doesn't get the respect she deserves. She's a winner of 18 or 19 races out of 38 starts, I was really disappointed to see her at 6-1 on the board... just kind of forgotten about. Time after time, she comes up and proves that she's a top horse in North America.@ ASitting inside the three-eighths pole, around the 5/16ths pole I had tons, and I waited for a chance to tip her out and her to run,@ said Stein. AShe's so honest and wants to win more than anybody else out there. I watched her replaysYshe's just gritty. She just waited for her cue and took off like a scalded cat. Magic Attitude | Coglianese

"I really like the way she did it,@ jockey Javier Castellano said. AWatching the replays, it seemed like she could be a little bit keen. She always seemed to break well out of the gate and get good forward position in Europe. Today, she broke OK. I tried to cover up a little bit. It was her first time in the country and a mile and a quarter and you always have to save something for the end. She sat beautifully behind the speed. She had a nice rhythm. When I asked her turning for home at the quarter pole, she just took off really well. I was very excited to see the way she did it today." Graduating at second asking in France for Haras Du Saubouas and trainer Fabrice Chappet, Magic Attitude checked in third in the Criterium de Lyon 15 days later. Victorious in the G3 Prix Vanteaux in May, she was privately purchased by Roy and Gretchen Jackson=s Lael Stables and was second in her first start for them in the G1 Prix Saint Alary June 14. The chestnut was fifth in her final European start in the G1 July 5 for trainer Fabrice Chappet and was transferred to Delacour.

Pedigree Notes: Magic Attitude is the 89th top-level scorer for the mighty Galileo and is bred on the same Galileo/Exceed and Excel cross as Group 1 winner Anthony Van Dyck. She is also one of 327 black-type winners and 221 graded winners for that Coolmore stalwart. Her dam, English Highweight and Group 1 winner Margot Did, is also the dam of GSW & MG1SP Mission Impassible (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).
