This is the first exhibition of the artist’s work to be held in Spain in the past thirty years since the retrospective staged in 1984 by the Museo Estatal de Arte Contemporáneo (from which today’s Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía originates). The exhibition now on display is curated by Guillermo Solana, artistic director of the Museum, with Paula Luengo as technical curator. Taking us through different sections—Portrait of an Unknown Man, The Bend in the Road, Nudes and Trees, The Phantom of Sainte-Victoire and Construction Game—Cézanne Site/Non-site explores the relationship between the two genres which the master of Aix-en- Provence cultivated with the same passion: landscapes and still lifes. Although Cézanne, following the example of his Impressionist contemporaries, painted his landscapes outdoors, the nature motifs he depicts are arranged into a sort of mise-en-scène, revealing compositions that are not impressions subject to seasonal and temporal changes. Furthermore, in an interplay of reciprocal influences, this painter’s still lifes incorporate the changes and tensions of nature itself. The exhibition relies on the invaluable contribution of many institutions and private collections from all over the world which have generously lent their works. Our most heartfelt thanks to them all for making it possible to bring such an ambitious project to fruition and for giving the people who live in Spain or travel to Madrid the pleasure of viewing this group of landscapes, still lifes, portraits and scenes of bathers, which is all the more outstanding owing to the difficulty of bringing them together in this day and age. RUINS OF THE LANDSCAPE “Nature speaks to everyone. And yet, no one has ever painted the landscape.” Cézanne according to Gasquet1 “With Cézanne landscape itself comes to an end,” wrote Robert Motherwell in 1944, with that very modern fondness for certifying the death of a tradition. I cannot help imagining Cézanne looking at Sainte-Victoire and unwittingly painting the last landscape in History. But Motherwell’s words are somewhat ambiguous. Does he mean that Cézanne destroyed (consciously or otherwise) landscape painting? Or did that responsibility fall to those who came after him? Whatever the case, the idea of the end of landscape would have surprised Cézanne, as he believed that the history of landscape had not even begun. 1. “La nature parle à tous. Eh bien!     David Chipperfield Architects

    David Chipperfield Architects Museum Folkwang Essen, Germany 2007–2010 The Museum Folkwang, founded in Hagen by Karl Ernst Osthaus in 1902, was the first museum of contemporary art in Europe. The most significant works were transferred from Hagen to Essen in 1922, from which point on, aside from a period when the National Socialists temporarily divested the collection, the museum was able to pursue a high level of collecting activity. Today, it is one of the most high profile museums of the classic modern in Germany. In 2007, David Chipperfield Architects won the international architecture competition for the museum extension, held by the city of Essen, one year before Prof. Dr. Berthold Beitz, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen and Halbach Foundation, announced that the foundation would be the sole sponsor in providing the funding for the new building. The building was constructed by the Neubau Museum Folkwang Essen GmbH, a company of the Wolff Group. The opening of the museum is one of the most important cultural events to be held in Essen and the Ruhr region during their time as European Capital of Culture 2010. The new building by David Chipperfield Architects complements the original building, continuing the architectural principle of an ensemble of six structures and four inner courtyards, gardens and galleries. The publicly accessible areas connect seamlessly with the existing exhibition areas. A generous open stairway leads from the Bismarckstraße into the new foyer, which takes the form of an open interior courtyard with a restaurant and a bookstore, and is protected from the street by a glass facade.

    Media Release Paul Gauguin 8 February to 28 June 2015 With Paul Gauguin (1848-1903), the Fondation Beyeler presents one of the most important and fascinating artists in history. As one of the great European cultural highlights in the year 2015, the exhibition at the Fondation Beyeler brings together over fifty masterpieces by Gauguin from leading international museums and private collections. This is the most dazzling exhibition of masterpieces by this exceptional, groundbreaking French artist that has been held in Switzerland for sixty years; the last major retrospective in neighbouring countries dates back around ten years. Over six years in the making, the show is the most elaborate exhibition project in the Fondation Beyeler’s history. The museum is consequently expecting a record number of visitors. The exhibition features Gauguin’s multifaceted self-portraits as well as the visionary, spiritual paintings from his time in Brittany, but it mainly focuses on the world-famous paintings he created in Tahiti. In them, the artist celebrates his ideal of an unspoilt exotic world, harmoniously combining nature and culture, mysticism and eroticism, dream and reality. In addition to paintings, the exhibition includes a selection of Gauguin’s enigmatic sculptures that evoke the art of the South Seas that had by then already largely vanished. There is no art museum in the world exclusively devoted to Gauguin’s work, so the precious loans come from 13 countries: Switzerland, Germany, France, Spain, Belgium, Great Britain (England and Scotland),

    This page intentionally left blank Murder in Aubagne Lynching, Law, and Justice during the French Revolution This is a study of factions, lynching, murder, terror, and counterterror during the French Revolution. It examines factionalism in small towns like Aubagne near Marseille, and how this produced the murders and prison massacres of 1795–1798. Another major theme is the conver- gence of lynching from below with official terror from above. Although the Terror may have been designed to solve a national emergency in the spring of 1793, in southern France it permitted one faction to con- tinue a struggle against its enemies, a struggle that had begun earlier over local issues like taxation and governance. This study uses the tech- niques of microhistory to tell the story of the small town of Aubagne. It then extends the scope to places nearby like Marseille, Arles, and Aix-en-Provence. Along the way, it illuminates familiar topics like the activity of clubs and revolutionary tribunals and then explores largely unexamined areas like lynching, the sociology of factions, the emer- gence of theories of violent fraternal democracy, and the nature of the White Terror. D. M. G. Sutherland received his M.A. from the University of Sussex and his Ph.D. from the University of London. He is currently professor of history at the University of Maryland, College Park. He is the author of The Chouans: The Social Origins of Popular Counterrevolution in Upper Brittany, 1770–1796 (1982), France, 1789–1815: Revolution and Counterrevolution (1985), and The French Revolution, 1770– 1815: The Quest for a Civic Order (2003) as well as numerous scholarly articles.

The fundamental principle of his art was a new, wholly perceptual observation of the most fleeting aspects of nature — of moving clouds and water, sun and shadow, rain and snow, mist and fog, dawn and sunset. Over a period of almost seventy years, from the late 1850s to his death in 1926, Monet must have pro duced close to 3,000 paintings, the vast majority of which were landscapes, seascapes, and river scenes. As his involvement with nature became more com plete, he turned from general representations of season and light to paint more specific, momentary, and transitory effects of weather and atmosphere. Late in the seventies he began to repeat his subjects at different seasons of the year or moments of the day, and in the nineties this became a regular procedure that resulted in his well-known "series " — Haystacks, Poplars, Cathedrals, Views of the Thames, Water ERRATA Lilies, etc.
