Un sondage effectué en 1984 sur la terrasse a révélé la présence de restes humains associés à de la céramique et à quelques 7 éléments d’industrie lithique suggérant une attribution au Néolithique final. Les résultats des campagnes 2017 et 2018 permettent de préciser et de prolonger ce premier diagnostic. Le matériel mis au jour est relativement riche tant du point de vue des assemblages fauni- que et anthropologique que du point de vue du matériel archéologique. L’étude de ces différentes catégories de vestiges ainsi que l’analyse géoarchéologique du gisement sont toujours en cours, mais les résultats préliminaires de ces différentes approches permettent d’ores et déjà d’entrevoir le potentiel informatif important du site. 1. Situation et présentation générale du gisement La cavité se situe environ 1,5 km au nord-nord-ouest du village de Treignes (coordonnées Lambert72 : X = 170,160, Y = 87,900, Z = 185 ; Fig. 1). Elle est implantée à la base d’une falaise calcaire longeant le plateau du hameau de Matignolle. Le porche s’ouvre au nord- ouest sur une étroite terrasse surplombant la rive gauche du ruisseau des Fonds de Ry, un affluent du Viroin. -

NOTICE EXPLICATIVE 1999 Carte Chimay-Couvin n° 57/7-8 Résumé La région couverte par la carte Chimay - Couvin fait partie de l’Ardenne sensu lato, qui est elle-même une portion de la zone rhéno-hercynienne de la chaîne varisque. Plus précisément, elle appartient à la bordure sud-ouest du Syncli- norium de Dinant. Cette région expose la coupe la plus complète du Dévonien du bord sud du Synclinorium de Dinant à savoir, une série de sédiments paléozoïques d’âge lochkovien à famennien. Trois grands épisodes sédimentaires sont reconnus : une série de sédiments terrigènes d’âge dévonien inférieur à eifelien inférieur (schistes, grès et quartzites) est séparée d’une autre série terrigène d’âge frasnien supérieur à famennien in- férieur (schiste et grès fins) par un important épisode calcaire d’âge eifelien moyen à frasnien moyen. -

CARACTERISTIQUES GEOGRAPHIQUES Dinant, située en Province de Namur, s’étend sur 99,8 km² et comptait 13 144 habitants au 1 er janvier 2007, soit une densité de population de 130 habitants/km². L’actuelle commune de Dinant est née de la fusion, en 1977, des anciennes communes de : Dinant, Anseremme, Bouvignes, Dréhance, Falmagne, Falmignoul, Foy-Notre-Dame, Furfooz, Lisogne, Sorinnes et Thynes. Dinant est le chef-lieu d’un des trois arrondissements de la province de Namur. L’arrondissement de Dinant compte 15 communes. Structure physique Dinant se situe en zone condruzienne, avec un paysage ondulé, fait d’alternance de roches dures et de dépressions. Ce relief établit sur des roches calcaires est creusé de vallées encaissées (Fonds de Leffe, Lesse) qui ont marqué l’histoire (moulins, carrières). Ces caractéristiques ont profondément imprégné l’habitat et la morphologie des villages (en moellons calcaires, allongés sur les tiges ou agglomérés au fond des vallées). Le relief est fortement marqué par le sous-sol calcaire et est constitué de la vallée encaissée de la Meuse à l’Ouest et de plateaux à l’Est. Ces plateaux sont entaillés de rivières parfois souterraines et aboutissent à des « charreaux ». Les paysages qui en résultent sont très caractéristiques et constituent des ressources uniques pour le tourisme vert.
