Swanny’s Scribbles

Good afternoon and welcome to The Scholars Ground for today's visit of Frickley Athletic. We extend a warm welcome to the management, players and directors from Frickley and hope they enjoy our hospitality.

It is nice to be back in competitive action after what has been the longest and most uncertain pre- season I hope we ever have to endure. Pre-season, whilst extended and tough, was also very enjoyable and we feel that the squad is in good shape to embark on the new season.

I think this showed somewhat in last Saturdays FA Cup victory against Kidsgrove. The game itself was somewhat scrappy, but I was pleased that we competed well and showed resilience at times to stay in the game until we could find a breakthrough. We know that we won't always be able to play a brand of football that is as pleasing on the eye as some of the pre-season games were, and we know just how relentless and unforgiving this league is, but it is all about getting positive results so I was delighted to get a win last week.

It will be great to officially welcome our new additions to Chasetown as we go into our first home league fixture. We believe that the recruitment over the summer has been good and we look forward to the new players really helping us to push on with what was already a very good squad. Danny O' Callaghan, Ben Lund, Joey Butlin, Kieron Berry, Kieron Cliff, Jordan Evans, Reggie Smith, Jamie Elkes and Connor Haddaway are all excellent signings and I am sure you will make them feel welcome at our club as well as some more familiar returnees in Chris Slater and Ryan Wynter. We also welcome Jake Moore who has joined the management team as Strength and Conditioning coach and Sports Therapist.

Finally, and a huge part of the team here at Church Street is yourselves. It was great to see a large following at Kidsgrove and the players really do thrive off your backing. We wish everyone a safe return to watching football and we will be working as hard as possible to be sending you away with smiles on your faces. Enjoy the game! Frickley Athletic - History

Frickley Athletic FC is based in the former coal mining village of South Elmsall. Recent research has shown that the first South Elmsall football team was formed in 1905 but was superseded in 1908 by the newly formed Frickley Colliery Athletic Club and joined the South Yorkshire League which comprised of works, church, and village teams. In 1910, the football club moved to the Sheffield Association League and first played in the FA (English) Cup.

The club remained in the Sheffield Association League (except for the war years) until 1922, finishing runners up in 1911/12, and winners in 1920/21, our only league title ever.

In 1922/23 Frickley joined the Yorkshire League and after finishing runners-up in 1923/24, the club were elected into the Midland League, Although the Club had to apply for re-election several times pre war (and didn’t play in any league in 1933/34) it was kept going by the support of the mineworkers and the sale of players.

1936/37 was Frickley’s worst ever league season when the club finished bottom with only 8 points, but amazingly reached the FA Cup First Round Proper for the first time.

Post-war, Frickley remained in the Midland League, gaining a best finish of seventh in 1945/46, until its break-up at the end of 1959/60.

From 1960/61 to 1969/70, Frickley Colliery played in the Cheshire County League, However, financial considerations led the club to join the Midland Counties League for 1970/71. They finished runners up in 1972/73 and were eventually elected into the NPL for the 1976/77 season as Frickley Athletic.

After finishing third in the League in 1979/80, the club was promoted into the Alliance Premier League, now the National League.

Here they remained for seven years, the most successful in the club’s history, and in 1985/86 reached the FA Cup Third Round proper, after beating a Football League club, Hartlepool United, only to lose 3-1 at home to Rotherham United. The club also finished as Gola league runners-up.

The following season saw a reversal as we were relegated back into the NPL.

From 1987/88 to 1991/92 the club consistently finished around mid- table in the NPL but did manage to reach the League Cup final in 1991/92, losing 1-0 to Marine at Maine Road.

Frickley Athletic - History

The next few seasons saw Frickley finish in the lower reaches of the table. Then, in 2005/06 the Blues enjoyed their most successful league season for 20 years as they finished runners-up to Blyth Spartans.

Unfortunately, though, the Blues were defeated on penalties In the Play- off Semi-Final.

In the following seasons Frickley returned to finishing in the lower half of the table, but 2015/16 saw the club have an excellent season to finish in seventh place.

This was not repeated in 2016/17 as most of the players who had brought this success were attracted to join other, more affluent clubs. The club were relegated from the NPL Premier Division after being members for 30 years.

2017/18 saw the club enter the NPL Division One South, finishing third in the league scoring a record 117 goals. Additionally, Jacob Hazel broke the Club record for individual goals in a season with 47 strikes. The season ended disappointingly with Play-off Semi-Final defeat at the hands of Stamford.

Season 2018/19, in the new NPL East Division, was a less successful one, seeing managerial changes and a twelfth-place finish.

However, the season was not without its highlights with victory at eventual champions, Morpeth and a mighty 10-1 win against Liversedge in the FA Cup.

More managerial change followed prior to the start of 2019/20, along with another league reorganisation, which saw the Blues go into the NPL South/East Division. After a poor start, Dave Frecklington took charge in September 2019. ‘Frecks’ rapidly turned the side’s fortunes around, taking them from last place to the top half of the table before lockdown ended the season.

Promotion back to the NPL Premier Division will undoubtedly be the aim for ‘Frecks’ and his team in 2020/21.

MATCH REPORTS KIDSGROVE 0 CHASETOWN 1

Venue Date Kick Off Autonet Insurance Stadium 12/09/2020 3.00pm

Chasetown made a good start and a Joey Butlin free kick was held in front of his body by Kieron Harrison.

The Scholars were a whisker away from the opener as Liam Kirton and Butlin almost got on the end of a Jordan Evans whipped cross.

Butlin then had an effort cleared off the line before Kirton collided with the post trying to head home an Oli Hayward ball from the wing.

Chasetown were in the ascendancy and Harrison denied a long range Jack Langston effort by finger tipping the ball over the crossbar.

Kidsgrove should have taken the lead on the stroke of half time. Will Byers crossed from the right and a stretching Ant Malbon some how struck the crossbar from 4 yards.

In the 65th minute, Chasetown were awarded a spot kick when Josh Thorpe clattered Kirton. Harrison saved the penalty to his left but Langston followed up to head home.

Harrison then handled outside the area and when Butlin's free kick was blocked, Langston fired the rebound wide.

Chasetown were reduced to ten men when Lewis Riley-Stewart received a second yellow card.

Athletic hit the bar again in the 85th minute when a right footed shot from Kingsley Adu- Gyamfi was flicked onto the frame of the goal by Curtis Pond.

Chase substitute Josh Cooke almost wrapped it up in stoppage time when his low shot struck the base of the post.

Kidsgrove sent everyone forward including their goalkeeper but Chasetown saw out the victory.

Joey Butlin – Striker Joey joins from Walsall Wood having played at Oak Park under our management team in seasons past. A combative striker whose ex clubs list Hednesford and Walsall. He is going to be a handful for any defender he comes up against, not afraid to put in a tackle and get stuck in. Sponsored by Andy Atkins Chasetown’s Pen Pics
