An Indian Khanda sword with fluted double=edged spine stiffened blade of 31"". Tulwar pattern steel disc 2 mounted hilt with leather covered scabbard. A VICTORIAN OFFICERS SWORD. A Victorian Infantry officers sword with crown over slung bugle in the hilt. Folding guard and very 3 rust damaged 31.3/4"" blade with spearpoint tip. Stell scabbard with two mounting rings again with rust evident. A ROYAL ARTILLERY OFFICERS SWORD. A three bar hilt Royal Artillery officers sword with Ubique and foilage decoration to the 4 34.1/2"" blade. With a leather covered scabbard. AN INFANTRY OFFICERS SWORD. A Victorian Infantry Officers sword with Victorian crown above the slung bugle in hilt. Hawkes & Co 5 on the 32.1/2"" single-edged blade. The Officers 1st Royal Tank Regt from all ranks 48 Gurkha Inf Bde April 1960. A JAMBIYA. A Jambiya dagger with silver and gold decoration, complete with scabbard. Silver mounts to the hilt, 6.5"" blade of classical 47 form, on an adapted belt. A PLINTH MOUNTED SUN COMPASS. A Cole pattern Mk 11 Sun Compass with 8.3/4"" brass dial. Various instructions and pointers 48 are on the dial, with an inset bubble leveller.

    Rules and Options The author has attempted to draw as much as possible from the guidelines provided in the 5th edition Players Handbooks and Dungeon Master's Guide. Statistics for weapons listed in the Dungeon Master's Guide were used to develop the damage scales used in this book. Interestingly, these scales correspond fairly well with the values listed in the d20 Modern books. Game masters should feel free to modify any of the statistics or optional rules in this book as necessary. It is important to remember that Dungeons and Dragons abstracts combat to a degree, and does so more than many other game systems, in the name of playability. For this reason, the subtle differences that exist between many firearms will often drop below what might be called a "horizon of granularity." In D&D, for example, two pistols that real world shooters could spend hours discussing, debating how a few extra ounces of weight or different barrel lengths might affect accuracy, or how different kinds of ammunition (soft-nosed, armor-piercing, etc.) might affect damage, may be, in game terms, almost identical. This is neither good nor bad; it is just the way Dungeons and Dragons handles such things. Who can use firearms? Firearms are assumed to be martial ranged weapons. Characters from worlds where firearms are common and who can use martial ranged weapons will be proficient in them. Anyone else will have to train to gain proficiency— the specifics are left to individual game masters. Optionally, the game master may also allow characters with individual weapon proficiencies to trade one proficiency for an equivalent one at the time of character creation (e.g., monks can trade shortswords for one specific martial melee weapon like a war scythe, rogues can trade hand crossbows for one kind of firearm like a Glock 17 pistol, etc.).

We almost missed each other in the crowd; he didn’t look at all like a terrorist. He stood with his feet together, a short and round man with a kind face, fair hair, and blue eyes. He might have been an Irish grammar-school teacher, not an IRA bomber or a British spy in hiding. Both of which he was. Fulton had agreed to meet only after an exchange of messages through an intermediary. Now, as we talked on the platform, he paced back and forth, scanning the faces of passersby. He checked the time, then checked it again. He spoke in an almost impenetrable brogue, and each time I leaned in to understand him, he leaned back, suspicious. He fidgeted with several mobile phones, one devoted to each of his lives. “I’m just cautious,” he said. He lives in London now, but his wife remains in Northern Ireland. He rarely goes out, for fear of bumping into the wrong person, and so leads a life of utter isolation, a forty-five-year-old man with a lot on his mind. During the next few months, Fulton and I met several times on Platform 13. Over time his jitters settled, his speech loosened, and his past tumbled out: his rise and fall in the Irish Republican Army, his deeds and misdeeds, his loyalties and betrayals.

Civil registration was introduced in England and Wales in 1837 and records were archived quarterly; hence, for example, 'born in 1840Q1' the author here uses to mean that the birth took place in January, February or March of 1840. Where only a baptism date is given for an individual born after 1837, assume the birth was registered in the same quarter.
