INTRODUCTION TO THE DEVON TRAFALGAR ROLL On the 19th October 1805 the combined fleet of France and Spain was observed to be sailing from Cadiz. News that the enemy fleet was at sea was relayed to the Commander in Chief of the British fleet, Vice Admiral Lord Nelson, and to intercept it his fleet sailed for the Straits of Gibraltar. On the eve of battle Nelson prayed: - May the great God, whom I worship, grant my country, and for the benefit of Europe in general a great and glorious victory; and may no misconduct in anyone tarnish it; and may humanity after victory be the predominant feature in the British Fleet. For myself, individually, I commit my life to him that made me, and may his blessings alight my endeavours for serving my Country faithfully. To him I resign myself and the just cause which is entrusted me to defend. Amen. Amen. Amen. When the fleets met off Cape Trafalgar on the morning of the 21st the British formed two columns and, in light westerly airs, set an easterly course to close. The van was led by Nelson’s flagship HMS Victory and the rear column by Vice Admiral Lord Collingwood’s flagship HMS Royal Sovereign. The combined fleet of 33 sail of the line, commanded by Admiral Villeneuve in Bucentaure, wore round and reached back to the north.

I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. ………………………………………. 1 ABSTRACT Extensive sources have been reviewed and analysed to piece together for the first time a detailed academic study of civilian evacuation to Devon1 viewed against the national backdrop. The primary focus of this thesis is the large number of unaccompanied children who were officially evacuated to the County under the auspices of the Government Evacuation Scheme during the Second World War. However, Chapter Six discusses the evacuation of mothers and accompanying children, unofficial (private) evacuees and private school parties. The majority of evacuated children arriving in Devon originated from the London area and southeastern counties. In addition large numbers of children were also evacuated to the County from Bristol and within the County from Plymouth (Devon) during 1941 and briefly from Exeter in May 1942. Each of the three national evacuation waves is considered individually throughout the text as they are quite distinct in complexion, a fact frequently ignored in generalised accounts which tend to focus on reaction to the initial wave.

    51 Fylymore, of Cam, was named an overseer of the will of Harry Fylymore, of Wickwar. Willym Phillymore, in 1571, was assessed to the subsidy, and paid 4s. upon £4 “in goods.” On the 24 July, 1571, William Fynimore attested the will of John Tratman [Trotman], of Cam, clothman. He made his own will as William Phinimore, of Cam, yeoman, 3 December, 1590, and was buried, as we have seen, 11 December, 1590.* His wife, Alice Phinimore, was buried at Cam 29 January, 1586. They appear to have left the following sons surviving them: George Phinimore, buried at Cam 6 March, 1614-5, probably the ancestor of several families of Phillimore, at Cam, most if not all of whom are now extinct. Richard Phinimore , of Cam, yeoman, was buried there 1 January, 1615-16. His son, John Phillimore, of Cam, yeoman, was also buried there 28 January, 1680-81, aged 91 years.† The principal representatives of this branch are, Capt. W. B. Phillimore, of Kendalls, Herts., Mr. Egerton G. B. Phillimore, M.A., and Sir Walter G. F. Phillimore, Bart., D.C.L. John Phinimore , the third son, was probably the ancestor of the Phillimores, of Slimbridge, Gloucestershire, now represented by Mr. Daniel Phillimore, Raymeadow, Toddington, Gloucestershire. DEVONSHIRE. In the early part of the seventeenth century, we find several families, whose name was then usually spelt Phenimore, settled in the parish of Halberton, near to Tiverton. From the fact that Humphrey has always been a favourite Christian name with them, it has been suggested that they may be descendants of Humphrey Fynmore, presumably the eldest son of William Fynmore, the Mayor of Reading.
