SAMFORD ISRAEL INFORMATION Dates May 17-29, 2016 Itinerary May 17 (Tue): Arrive Tel Aviv After our meet-up at Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv, we take an easy bus ride to the coastal town of Netanya for a restful afternoon and dinner. Overnight: Seasons Hotel, Netanya May 18 (Wed): From Caesarea to the Sea of Galilee Our first day of exploring takes us to Caesarea Maritima, center of Rome’s rule over Israel and headquarters for Pontius Pilate. As we head north, we visit Mt. Carmel, the site of Elijah’s contest with the prophets of Baal. Next it is on to Megiddo, a store city during the days of King Solomon, for a look at Canaanite temples and the town’s ancient water system. From Megiddo, best known through its Greek name, Armageddon, we can imagine the scene envisioned by the author of Revelation. To close out the day, we ascend to the town of Nazareth, setting for the boyhood years of Jesus, before settling in at our hotel in the lakeside town of Tiberias. Overnight: Caesar Premier Hotel May 19 (Thu): North to the Golan Today we head north to explore the Upper Galilee. Our first stop is the important city of Hazor, famously conquered by Joshua during the time of the Conquest and again by Deborah during the time of the Judges. Leaving Hazor, we travel to ancient Israel’s northernmost city, Dan, where King Jeroboam provoked the prophets’ ire by installing a shrine housing a golden calf. We then visit the springs of nearby Banias, known in Jesus’ day as Caesarea Philippi, the location where Peter famously said, “You are the Christ, the son of the living God.” As we turn southward again, we visit the famous zealot outpost of Gamla before stopping at Kursi, the site where Jesus cast the demons into a herd of swine. -

WESTERN WALL ַה ּכֹו ֶתל ַה ַּמ ַעָר ִבי The Western Wall, known as the Kotel, is revered as the holiest site for the Jewish people. A part of the outer retaining wall of the Second Temple that was destroyed by the Romans in 70 CE, it is the place closest to the ancient Holy of Holies, where only the Kohanim— —Jewish priests were allowed access. When Israel gained independence in 1948, Jordan controlled the Western Wall and all of the Old City of Jerusalem; the city was reunified in the 1967 Six-Day War. The Western Wall is considered an Orthodox synagogue by Israeli authorities, with separate prayer spaces for men and women. A mixed egalitarian prayer area operates along a nearby section of the Temple’s retaining wall, raising to the forefront contemporary ideas of religious expression—a prime example of how Israel navigates between past and present. There’s no other place that feels more authentically Israeli than a shuk on Friday afternoon, as seemingly everyone shops for Shabbat. Drawn by the freshness and variety of produce, Israelis and tourists alike flock to the shuk, turning it into a microcosm of the country. Shuks in smaller cities and towns operate just one day per week, while larger markets often play a key role in the city’s cultural life. Bulletin of the Anglo-Israel Archaeological Society 2007 Volume 25 Reassessing the Judean Desert Caves: Libraries, Archives, Genizas and Hiding Places STEPHEN PFANN In December 1952, five years after the discovery of Qumran cave 1, Roland de Vaux connected its manuscript remains to the nearby site of Khirbet Qumran when he found one of the unique cylindrical jars, typical of cave 1Q, embedded in the floor of the site. The power of this suggestion was such that, from that point on, as each successive Judean Desert cave containing first-century scrolls was discovered, they, too, were assumed to have originated from the site of Qumran. Even the scrolls discovered at Masada were thought to have arrived there by the hands of Essene refugees. Other researchers have since proposed that certain teachings within the scrolls of Qumran’s caves provide evidence for a sect that does not match that of the Essenes described by first-century writers such as Josephus, Philo and Pliny. These researchers prefer to call this group ‘the Qumran Community’, ‘the Covenanters’, ‘the Yahad ’ or simply ‘sectarians’. The problem is that no single title sufficiently covers the doctrines presented in the scrolls, primarily since there is a clear diversity in doctrine among these scrolls.1 In this article, I would like to present a challenge to this monolithic approach to the understanding of the caves and their scroll collections. This reassessment will be based on a close examination of the material culture of the caves (including ceramics and fabrics) and the palaeographic dating of the scroll collections in individual caves. -

The Qumran Collection as a Scribal Library Sidnie White Crawford Since the early days of Dead Sea Scrolls scholarship, the collection of scrolls found in the eleven caves in the vicinity of Qumran has been identified as a library.1 That term, however, was undefined in relation to its ancient context. In the Greco-Roman world the word “library” calls to mind the great libraries of the Hellenistic world, such as those at Alexandria and Pergamum.2 However, a more useful comparison can be drawn with the libraries unearthed in the ancient Near East, primarily in Mesopotamia but also in Egypt.3 These librar- ies, whether attached to temples or royal palaces or privately owned, were shaped by the scribal elite of their societies. Ancient Near Eastern scribes were the literati in a largely illiterate society, and were responsible for collecting, preserving, and transmitting to future generations the cultural heritage of their peoples. In the Qumran corpus, I will argue, we see these same interests of collection, preservation, and transmission. Thus I will demonstrate that, on the basis of these comparisons, the Qumran collection is best described as a library with an archival component, shaped by the interests of the elite scholar scribes who were responsible for it. -

Have dinner on own Hotel: Jerusalem ________________________________________________________________________________ Day 2 / Tuesday, May 28, 2019 – Old City of Jerusalem Experience the Christian, Jewish, and Muslim history of Jerusalem and the city through the eyes of your Israeli and Palestinian guides and local religious leaders. Schedule: § Meet your guides over breakfast at the hotel. § Ascend to the Temple Mount/Al-Haram al-Sharif and tour the precinct. An imam from the mosque will explain the importance of the site to Muslims (FYI – Only Muslim can enter the Dome of the Rock). § Visit the Kotel (Western Wall) plaza and learn about the current state of affairs to create an egalitarian section. § Then, explore the excavated hidden layers of the Western Wall tunnels. § Have a falafel lunch at Abu Shukri’s. § Learn about the Christian “Stations of the Cross” along the Via Dolorosa with a local pastor (ideally Rev. Naim Ateek from the Sabeel Ecumenical Liberation Theology Center). The pastor will lead the group through the incense-filled halls of the Holy Sepulchre Church, the place identified as both the site of the crucifixion and the tomb of Jesus. § Weave through the shops and alleyways of the Arab shuk (market) in the Old City, where you can practice your haggling skills.
