Students receive first-rate information, advice and guidance, which help them to make well-informed decisions about future employment, education and training.” SENIOR STUDENTS Tom Parkin Isobel Hardwick Head Boy Head Girl The Courses Available at Prince Henry’s Sixth Form We offer a wide range of courses: • 26 different A levels • 4 Level 3 Technical courses • Employability, Enrichment and Pastoral guidance • Electives A levels Art and Design English Literature Music Art: Textiles Film Studies Physical Education Biology French Physics Business Further Maths Politics Chemistry Geography Product Design Computer Science German Psychology Drama and Theatre History Religion, Studies Philosophy and Economics Italian Ethics English Language Mathematics Spanish Level 3 Technical Diplomas ● Food and Nutrition ● Health and Social Care ● Information Technology ● Creative Media Production Our Offer ● Our main programme will consist of 3 A levels and a programme of Enrichment ● Universities make offers based upon 3 A level grades and the top universities have said that they value higher grades over an additional subject ● Exceptional students may be able to embark upon a 4 A level programme in consultation with the Head of Sixth Form, if they have achieved at least 6 As at GCSE with an A* in the 4 subjects chosen ● Further Maths will continue to run giving some students a fourth A level option. Ofsted 2013: Teaching in the Sixth Form is outstanding. Teachers ensure that students understand key subject ideas in the level of depth that will enable them to achieve the higher grades. Students take responsibility for monitoring their own progress against personal targets and collaborate well in helping each other to achieve. Private Study Time In addition to timetabled lessons students also have Private Study Time. Some is timetabled specifically for study and takes place in the designated Private Study room under the supervision of Mrs Ridley. Other lessons are left blank on student timetables so that they can decide how best to use the time. Student View Internal Students: Evan Jones Lucy Malley External Students: Carenza Franklin Maddie Debonis Sixth Form Life Tutor Time ● Tutor groups of about 15 students in friendship groups. ● The same Tutor for two years so that tutors build relationships and get to know students well enough to write detailed references. ● Inter-tutor group competitions and quizzes. ● Tutor programme aimed at preparation for Sixth Form life, study skills, team building, university applications, life skills etc. Enrichment and Guidance Students will have lectures from a variety of outside speakers on a range of topics that will help them to make the step up to A level study and then prepare them for the next steps after school. There will be a focus on • study skills • health and well-being • politics and the world around us • next step choices at 18+ Electives ● Each student selects an Elective to follow – in some cases for the whole year, in other cases this changes termly. ● Current choices include: Thinking Skills AS level, Duke of Edinburgh Award, Photography, Fitness Suite, Gold and Silver Arts Award, Young Enterprise, Holiday Spanish, Into Teaching, Food Preparation Skills, Advanced ECDL qualification, Beginners’ Latin, Reading Buddies, Student Mentor, Extended Project Qualification. Wednesday Afternoons ● There are no lessons on Wednesday afternoons ● All students participate in competitive or recreational sport ● Sports activities include football, hockey, dodge ball, rugby, badminton, table tennis, Pilates and use of the school fitness suite ● Students applying for medicine or teaching may sometimes use this time for volunteering. Extra Curricular Opportunities ● World Challenge – Cambodia and Laos - 2017 ● Sixth Form cultural visit to New York and Washington DC February 2018 ● Senior Prefects Team Building weekend ● Team building day at the Swynnerton Army base ● Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme (Gold & Silver) ● School drama productions – 2016 Les Miserables, 2017 Much Ado About Nothing, 2018 Oklahoma ● Music: jazz band, orchestra, big band, choir, barber shop – Music Tour to Italy 2017 ● Sport: football, hockey, rugby, netball, athletics, rounders, basketball etc. ● Foreign language exchanges – Germany, Spain, France ● Interact Charity Fundraising Committee ● Student organised Drop the Mic, Fashion Show ● Young Enterprise ● Field Trips – e.g. Biology, Geography, I.T, Engineering ● Winter Ball and other social events ● Sixth Form social visits: Birmingham Markets, London Sixth Form Facilities ● Sixth Form common room is a separate space just for Sixth Formers ● Snack bar selling hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, soup, cakes, paninis, bacon sandwiches etc. ● Hot water tap for making drinks, water cooler, toaster, microwave, sink and fridge ● Private Study rooms and Sixth Form Computer room exclusively for Sixth Form Students Sixth Form Common Room Uniform Boys Uniform Black school trousers Plain white shirt (short sleeved acceptable) Sixth Form Tie School blazer with school badge Sixth form navy blue V-neck pullover (optional) Boys must be clean shaven, no facial hair is allowed Girls Uniform No blazer or tie required School navy skirt with logo –choice of 3 styles Blue and white striped blouse – 3/4 or short sleeved Sixth Form navy blue V-neck cardigan or pullover (optional) Differences between Sixth Form & Lower School ● Students choose their subjects ● Fewer subjects but much more difficult ● Non-contact time ● Closer relationship with staff ● Exclusive Sixth Form facilities and areas ● More extra-curricular activities ● Students have permission to leave school the site ● Different uniform Video package Financial Support 16-19 Bursary Fund ● Funding for the 16-19 Bursary comes from central Government but is administered by schools and colleges; it is intended to provide financial support to help 16-19 year olds continue in full-time education, where they might otherwise struggle for financial reasons. ● There is a weekly bursary for certain groups of vulnerable students and once these guaranteed bursaries have been allocated, the remaining funds are used to offer discretionary bursaries to other students in most need of financial support. You may be eligible for a discretionary bursary if you are entitled to free school meals, or if your household income is below £20,000. It is our aim to offer weekly bursaries to all those who fall into these groups ● Students can also apply for bursary help with school visits and other expenses. ● More information can be gained by talking to the Sixth Form team, all information is treated in confidence. Students should consider: ●INTEREST ●ABILITY ●ASSESSMENT STYLE ●FUTURE PLANS What are the entry requirements? ● All students starting courses at A Level must have a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade 4-9, of which at least 2 must be a grade 6. ● Must include English Language or Literature and Maths at numerical grade 4 or above. ● Some subjects require at least a grade 6 e.g. Science, Maths, Humanities, Languages. The Transition to Sixth Form 1. ✓ Prospectus issued to students with a letter. 2. ✓Students should return the reply slip requesting an interview with a senior teacher. 3. ✓Talk to Year 11 students in assembly - Monday 11th December 2017 4. ✓The Sixth Form Subject Fair - Monday 11th December 2017 5. ✓Sixth Form Information Talk for Parents - Tuesday 16th January 2018 6. Sixth Form Interviews – 4th January – 12th January 2018 7. Return application form with provisional choices – February 26th 2018 8. Induction Day - Thursday 28th June 2018 9. GCSE results and Consultation– Thursday 23rd August and Friday 24th August 2018 10. Complete Option Choice Form on line - deadline Tuesday 28th August 2018 Student Destinations: ● The vast majority (75%) of Prince Henry’s Sixth Formers go on to University including Oxford and Cambridge, Russell Group and Sunday Times Top 20 universities (32%) straight from school. ● Some take a Gap Year (12%) with either a deferred application or they choose to apply with school support during their Gap Year ● Other students go into employment, management training schemes and apprenticeships. ● Students over the last two years have started apprenticeships with amongst others accountancy firms, GCHQ, Plexus Law, GE Aviation, Jaguar Landrover and Honda Motorcycling.
