The homes are low-rise and low-density with few apartments per cluster. Each is set into the natural tree canopy with landscaped gardens and beautiful skyline views. Ashjar’s Phase 1 totals 120 elegant apartments, from one to three bedrooms, spread amongst 9 low-rise buildings arranged in small clusters of 3-5. Ashjar is segmented into 3 distinct categories: Introvert, Extrovert and Cube. Each category is crafted differently, allowing buyers to choose a home that ideally suits their personality and lifestyle. The segments are separated by dense forested areas, creating secluded natural havens. 14 15 Luxury Apartments Fused With Green Surroundings With up to five floors, the homes are arranged in a step-layered design and enjoy natural light without being fully exposed to the sun at most times of the day. The chic, all-white design in an ultra-modern style is open and airy with all the space to breathe. Each collection will share an underground parking, swimming pool, children’s play area and Al Barari’s landscaped gardens. Residents will also be able to access the facilities of Seventh Heaven, including retail offerings and dining venues. Additional facilities of the wider Al Barari development incorporate Body Language health club, which includes a gym, infinity-edge swimming pool, two tennis courts and a full schedule of exercise classes; The Farm restaurant and Heart & Soul spa and wellness. 16 17 Unique Lifestyle In A Forested Haven The homes have a much more intimate layout and offer utmost privacy to their residents. The innovative movable doors on the terraces can be arranged to create secluded personal retreats. These apartments are modern in design and complement the natural landscape. Luxury finishes for the interiors will include high- end porcelain and ceramic tiles in the bathrooms, kitchen and formal areas, marble tops in the kitchen with Siematic kitchen cabinets and Miele kitchen appliances. Ashjar has received the 2014 Cityscape award for Future Residential Project, 2014 International Property Award (IPA) for Best Residential Development – Multiple Units as well as the 2014 iProperty Best Development award for Best Resort Living Development. 18 19 Ideal Balance Of Community And Privacy Ashjar has envisioned a unique lifestyle in a forested haven and crafted homes that extend beyond the doors of a house. Here, the natural, green world is not only a part of life and living spaces, but is the very foundation of this vision called Ashjar. An inventive façade of cascading terraces creates a distinctive view for each home. The choice is splendidly yours - a terrace opening into the forest floor; a terrace that opens into the leafy tree canopy; or a terrace overlooking the forest with vistas extending to the majestic Dubai skyline. Ashjar’s collection of homes, set around shared facilities, offers the ideal balance of community and privacy. The clusters at Ashjar are built into the landscape as though they are part of the very forest itself. Even the gardens within the homes embrace the forest landscape outside. This is Ashjar, a forest hideaway, enveloped by a boundless canopy of trees. 20 21 22 23 For sales inquiries, please contact +971 4 2866770 or visit our Office No. 2615, ENI Churchill Tower, Business Bay, Dubai, UAE www.homeloungeuae.com.

Data from Demographia World Urban Areas (http://www.demographia.com/db-worldua.pdf) February 1, 2010 I picked up a copy of The Wall Street Journal-Europe on the concourse while boarding my Emirates Air flight from Paris to Dubai in late November of 2009. The lead story provided an unexpected relevance to the trip --- my first to Dubai. Dubai World, owned by the Dubai government, had announced a 6-month moratorium on payments of some of its $60 billion in debt. Since the announcement, stock markets have been dropping and recovering, company officials have attempted to calm borrowers and government officials have provided less assurance than Dubai’s investors might have preferred, though richer, neighboring Abu Dhabi backstopped Dubai with $10 billion in December. The United Arab Emirates: Dubai is one of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which like the United States and Canada is a federation. Broadly speaking, the emirates are as states or provinces. By far the richest is Abu Dhabi, with something like 10% of the world’s oil reserves.

To further explore this phenomenon, this thesis focuses on three aspects that affect the dynamic relationship between the primary city and the cities within cities (sub-cities) in the Gulf region with special emphasis on Dubai. First, the naming problem of the sub-city illustrates why the tension between competing identities produces a set of effects that could either enforce or confuse the overall urban identity. Secondly, this thesis demonstrates how Dubai utilizes two seemingly opposed growth strategies (sprawl and infill) in order to grow as a primary city and to integrate its sub-cities. The last aspect explores how Dubai’s internal governance structure enables the freedom and autonomy of sub-cities.
