The International Edvard Grieg Society, Grieg Academy/Centre for Grieg Research University of Bergen and Edvard Grieg Museum Troldhaugen invite scholars and performers to the event Romantic Piano Meets the Hardanger Fiddle: Edvard Grieg’s Chamber Works and Solo Piano Music International Seminar and Workshop, Bergen, 26-29 October 2017 Edvard Grieg’s chamber and solo piano music includes some of the most important works of the 19 th century repertoire for strings and piano. As intriguing amalgamations of Romantic lyricism, European pianism, and the traditions of Norwegian folk music, they raise practical issues of performance and interpretation, which cannot be addressed solely by reading the edited scores. The focus area of this workshop and seminar will explore the creative interchange of folk and art music in performance traditions from Grieg’s time to the present. The event will combine academic lectures, practical demonstrations, master classes, individual teaching sessions, discussion forums, and performances. The aim is to bring artists together with researchers who are specialists on the performance practice of Romantic art music and Norwegian folk music, so that the workshop-seminars provide an opportunity for sharing knowledge and experiences of still quite separated areas. Invited guest scholars and performers: Clive Brown (University of Leeds, UK), Einar Steen-Nøkleberg (piano, Norway), Rolf Erdahl (Gustavus Adolphus College, Minnesota, USA), and Håkon Asheim (Ole Bull Academy, Norway). Participating staff from the Grieg Academy and Centre for Grieg Research: Ricardo Odriozola (violin), Signe Bakke (piano), Torleif Torgersen (piano), Einar Røttingen (piano), John Ehde (cello) and Arnulf Mattes (musicology). The performance workshops will be open to a limited number of active participants.

Hebert Bergen University College, Norway Abstract This article reports on an applied ethnomusicological and historical study that guided the development of a new music curriculum for schools in Guyana, a multi- ethnic and postcolonial nation in Latin America. We establish our rationale with an introduction to Guyana and the status quo of its school music education, then embark on examining the socio-historical background: from Indigenous Peoples and the European settlement of colonial Guyana, to the arrival of Africans as slaves, and indentured servants from Portugal, China and East India. The diverse heritage of post-colonial Guyana, including distinctive creolization, is reviewed as a prelude to discussion of local music traditions and their representation in schools.

Stige is co-editor of the international journal Voices: A World Forum for Music Therapy (Open Access) and a member of the editorial board of Nordic Journal of Music Therapy. As a researcher Stige has been preoccupied particularly with the cultural and social aspects of music therapy, and he has focused upon themes such as disabled persons’ participation in the local music practice, psychiatric patients’ experience of the music therapy service and music as a health promoting resource in the local community. Stige is now leading the project “Network for research on music therapy and the elderly” (2008-2012). This is a Nordic network which aims to build up a research close to practice, that can increase the competency and develop the music therapy service in the geriatric care. He has published many articles and several books in Norwegian and English.

This spring, the World Economic Forum ranked for the first time the water crisis as the greatest global risk to economies, environments and societies in the forthcoming decade. Last year, NATO held their largest military exercise since the Cold War simulating war over water. The UN’s General Secretary and the World Bank have argued that management of water is crucial to future developments. This year, the Summer Research School will approach global challenges related to “Water, Climate & Society” from many disciplines through plenary sessions, keynote lectures, and in particular through the seven parallel courses: • Climate change and water • Modelling the complexities of water, climate and society • Poverty, climate change and water in the context of SDGs • River basins, power and law • The ocean, climate and society • Religion and water • Water and global health BSRS seeks to create a unique environment for participants to present, engage, discuss, progress their thinking, and improve on their work. Music and the Moving Image XVI MAY 28 – MAY 31, 2020 BIOS Marcos Acevedo-Arús is a music theorist from Puerto Rico. Marcos is currently a graduate student and teaching assistant at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA, studying towards a Master of Music degree in Music Theory. Marcos received his undergraduate degree in Piano Performance from the Puerto Rico Music Conservatory in San Juan, PR in 2015. Marcos’ current interests include video game and pop music analysis, music cognition, musical narrative, and affect theory. Marcos’ previous presentations include “Conflicts and Contrasts in Isaac Albéniz’s ‘Córdoba’” in the 5th Symposium of Musical Research “Puentes Caribeños”. Stephen Amico is Associate Professor of Musicology at the Grieg Academy/University of Bergen, Norway. He has published widely in the areas of popular music studies, Russian and post-Soviet popular culture, and gender and sexuality. His recent work has appeared in the journal Popular Music and Society and The Oxford Handbook of Music and Queerness, with forthcoming work to appear in The Oxford Handbook of Phenomenological Ethnomusicology and the Journal of Musicology. Richard Anatone is a pianist, composer, writer, teacher, and editor. He completed his Doctoral degree in piano performance from Ball State University, and currently serves as Professor of Music at Prince George’s Community College in Maryland. His primary interests are rooted in the music of Nobuo Uematsu, the use of humor and music in games, and early chiptunes, and has presented his research at NACVGM, SCI, and CMS conferences. He is currently editing a collection of chapters on the music Nobuo Uematsu in the soundtracks to the Final Fantasy video game series.
