G A G O S I A N G A L L E R Y 14 June 2016 I called some paintings perspectives but I'm not interested in perspective; I called some butterflies but I don't think they are butterflies; I call my sculptures masks but they are not masks. —Mark Grotjahn Gagosian Gallery is pleased to present “Pink Cosco,” an exhibition of new, large-scale painted bronze sculptures by Mark Grotjahn. Grotjahn's work is inseparable from its present moment, yet willing to make explicit art-historical reference. He borrows from Op art, Abstract Expressionism, Pop art, and Renaissance perspective, but achieves effects that reach forward and backward simultaneously. To occupy this precarious past-future visual position requires intense concentration, calculation, and control. As he painted his Butterfly paintings, Grotjahn sought an escape from precision: he began making masks out of the cardboard boxes lying around his studio—the discarded shells of art materials, gifts, and other packaging. He painted the boxes and attached toilet paper roll tubes that stuck out between cut-out eyes. The Masks, although originally started as a casual practice, quickly asserted themselves as a new armature for painting—an armature that would straddle time just as much as the two-dimensional geometric works. Courtesy of Sotheby's A fierce family war has blow up over the sale of Jean-Michel Basquiat’s Flesh and Spirit (1982-83), a large scale oil painting on wood that sold for $30.7m at Sotheby's last month. This week, the work's consigner, Belinda Neumann-Donnelly, sued her father, Hubert Neumann, for attempting to halt the auction, which Neumann-Donnelly argues depreciated the work’s final sale price. In her suit filed on Thursday (7 June) in New York Supreme Court, Neumann-Donnelly says that the work could have fetched as much as $45m had her father not muddied the sale at Sotheby's. The following evening, Phillips New York sold a comparable work by Jean-Michel Basquiat, called Flexible (1984), for $45.3m. Neumann-Donnelly is asking for $100m in her lawsuit. Hubert Neumann says that the entire dispute “stems from the fact Belinda went behind my back to sell very valuable [Basquiat work] that was owned by my deceased wife”, and that he initially heard about the sale through Bloomberg News. Neumann-Donnelly’s mother, Dolores Neumann, who died in September 2016, bought the painting directly from the artist in 1983 and, according to the complaint, left her estate to Neumann- Donnelly after writing Neumann out of her will. -

Phillips Sale of 20th-Century and Contemporary Art BY Annie Armstrong POSTED 05/17/18 8:16 PM 7 24 1 47 Tonight at its sales room in Midtown New York, Phillips totaled $131.6 million at its sale of 20th-century and contemporary art, a jump of roughly 15 percent over the $113.9 million it brought at the same auction last May. Just three of the 36 lots that went up on the block failed to sell, for an impressive sell-through rate of about 92 percent, though three lots were withdrawn before the start of the action: a Sigmar Polke, a David Hammons, and a Zeng Fanzhi. (About a third of the lots—13 out of of the 36—carried guarantees either by the house or a third party.) The top lot of the evening was Jean-Michel Basquiat’s Flexible (1984), which he painted on a section of picket fence he found outside his New York studio, and posed next to in a number of photographs. Despite these various, and ostensibly conflicting associations, its classical epithet—the Eternal City— reflects the symbiosis of these qualities and their lasting influence on republics, nations, religions and even continents beyond. For while Rome’s significance waxed and waned through plagues and progress, conflict and collaboration, its political, social, cultural, and religious power remained consistently strong throughout its history. Assembled entirely from LACMA’s permanent collection, this examination of a significant moment in early Modern Europe reflects the donations and gifts from years of support to the museum’s departments of Costume and Textiles, Decorative Arts and Design, Latin American Art, and Prints and Drawings, in addition to European Paintings and Sculpture. These works reveal the depth of Rome’s impact from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment, before rising individualism, internationalism, and the optimistic equilibrium between secular and religious forces caused the city’s ultimate marginalization.
