On April 2nd a joyful celebration was held in Helen Kennedy, who sings in our TCS Chapel to celebrate the 60th wedding choir, recently had two paintings on anniversary of Tom and Pat Lawson. They display at the Engine Gallery on Walton were married in this chapel in 1956 – only the Street. Her mother, Wilhelmina third couple to wed there since the chapel was Kennedy, is also an accomplished built in 1951. Fr Don Aitcheson presided over painter.. this gathering of family and friends, some of whom had known Pat and Tom since their St. Markers on the move: Frank and wedding day. Fournie A Thesis submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Department of Anthropology Memorial University of Newfoundland June 2014 St. John‘s, Newfoundland ABSTRACT The 1971 Burgeo strike was a central moment in the development of working- class consciousness in Newfoundland. Combining archival sources with the author‘s own field interviews, this thesis illustrates how the development of industrial production during the two and a half decades after the Second World War generated a corresponding shift in the society and culture of rural Newfoundland. The resulting narrative demonstrates a model of class formation in the ―industrial villages‖ of outport Newfoundland. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This thesis is dedicated to my supervisor August Carbonella.     THE FOLKLORE OF "OLD FOOLISHNESS' Newfoundland Media Legends Peter Narvaez ΤIHE TECHNOLOGICAL MEDIA which transmit popular culture have often been vieweIHd Eby folklorists and other students of culture as "destroyers of folklore."1 Folklore, however, is a dynamic component of culture which func- tions adaptively in situations of rapid cultural change; such adaptiveness is especially reflected in the generation of folkloric forms which make critical com- ments about new situations. For more than a century, rapidly developing techno- logical media have been modifying the sensory experiences of the populations of Newfoundland and Labrador. The adaptive function of folklore will be illustrated in this discussion through an analysis of a cluster of media legends which reveal adjustments to new media technologies. Mass Media and Popular Culture as Destroyers of Folklore The study of contemporary folklore encompasses a vast array of old and modern expressive behaviours, texts, and contexts. Although the "media as destroyers" idea is not universally entertained, it is an important notion, which merits more than peripheral consideration. The destroyers argument is a deter- ministic value judgement whose tenets are: folklore is basically good; when popular culture, an inferior expressive form, and the technological media of its transmission are introduced into given cultural scenes, they either supplant or unfairly compete with folklore. It follows implicitly from such an argument that the responsibility of the folklorist is to save, nurture, and

Born in Wesleyville, Newfoundland in 1941, Blackwood was exposed to subjects which influenced the themes represented in his art: fishermen and sealers and their families; relationships with the land; harsh landscapes; and the importance of tradition to communities on Canada’s east coast. Blackwood attended the Ontario College of Art from 1959-1963, where he studied printmaking. Subsequently, he was the first artist-in-residence at Erindale College at University of Toronto Mississauga, from 1969 to 1975. The Erindale College Art Gallery was renamed The Blackwood Gallery in 1992 in the artist’s honour. In 1976, Blackwood was the subject of a documentary produced by the National Film Board of Canada – titled Blackwood – which was nominated for an Academy Award. Blackwood was a member of the AGO Board of Trustees and the Inuit Art Foundation in Ottawa. He was also the recipient of numerous other awards and accolades, including honorary doctorates at the University of Calgary and Memorial University of Newfoundland (1992); a National Heritage Award (1993); the Order of Ontario (2002); and the Order of Canada (1993).
