Recorded & The Best Thing For Me released in 1999 by Tree Records & Sappy Records (reissued by Jagjaguwar in 2002), the album In This Dark finds Ottawa-based quartet the Wooden Stars playing Doiron's back-up band, helping her step Drums + Horns out of the solitary, introspective robe she'd been wearing and venture into a more urgent and Dance Music upbeat — albeit still fundamentally spartan — direction. Combining elements of rock and jazz Au Contraire a la Joni Mitchell's early '70s work, Julie and the Wooden Stars somehow translated the Seven coldness of the Canadian winter into one of the warmest and most tender records to be The Second Time produced in the Eastern province in years. • The Sadies Northern Passages [2017 Bio] by Jason Schneider the Cover
The Sadies Northern Passages [2017 Bio] By Jason Schneider The cover of The Sadies’ new album is a powerful image of the northern lights made by photographer David Kilabuk in Pangnirtung, Nunavut, a sight few of us will ever get to behold with our own eyes. Yet, the awe-inspiring natural beauty and mystery captured in the photo are an ideal reflection of the music contained within. No further embellishment seems necessary. That’s been the essence of The Sadies’ story ever since the quartet comprised of singer/guitarists Dallas and Travis Good, bassist Sean Dean and drummer Mike Belitsky first exploded onto the North American scene 20 years ago. Back then there was still something called “alt-country,” a catchall for artists striving to carry on traditions with punk rock attitude. The Sadies certainly fit that description, but the breadth of their skills and musical knowledge was unparalleled since a group of fellow Torontonians left Ronnie Hawkins in the mid-‘60s to take a job backing Bob Dylan. As the aurora borealis shifted with each album The Sadies made, the overall picture took on more defined colours. On top of that was the incredible list of collaborations—Neko Case, R&B legend Andre Williams, The Mekons’ Jon Langford, Jon Spencer, Robyn Hitchcock, John Doe, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Gord Downie, Neil Young for fuck’s sake!— each one pushing The Sadies’ own sound into new, unmapped territory. Eventually, more time was taken in between albums as focus shifted to their original songwriting, and what was once the best live band in Canada became the best band in Canada, period.

JULIE DOIRON GOODNIGHT NOBODY Snowfalls in November • Sorry Part III • Last Night • No Money Makers • Tonight Is No Night • Dirty Feet Dance All Night • When I Awoke • The Songwriter • Some Blues • Banjo • Good Night Goodnight Nobody finds an unguarded Julie Doiron, efficiently but undeliberately creating her first masterpiece in a few days time at three different locations. This is similar to how Bob Dylan approached the making of his classic 60’s output, ploughing through a studio in two to three days with a gangly crew of studio musicians. The result of such an approach is a collection of songs that all are “allowed” to speak for themselves. Their instinctive “rawness” remains intact, not cooked out by incessant knob twiddling or second-guessing. With the help of friends like Herman Dune (who also perform as her European touring band) and ex-Eric’s Trip collaborator Rick White, she has taken the textures of her first widely released full-length Loneliest in the Morning and mixed them with the crystalline vocal performance of her most recent full-length Heart and Crime. Goodnight Nobody is the end product, the best of both worlds, downcast and moody pop tunes right from the heart, aimed straight at the heart. For songwriters, there is a fine line between being unabashed and being unguarded. The first state intimates an awareness, that one knows how they are being perceived and consciously decides to ignore, for better or for worse, any external criticism.

  • 15 July 2006 Questions by Zarya Cynader (University of British Columbia)
VETO VIII: 15 July 2006 Questions by Zarya Cynader (University of British Columbia) TOSSUPS 1. It has been published annually since 1986, and is probably the world’s best-known indicator of purchasing-power parity. In 2004, an analogue involving the tall latte was developed, a nod to Starbucks Coffee as its ubiquity approaches that of the namesake product. For ten points, identify this index pub- lished by The Economist, ”arguably the world's most accurate financial indicator to be based on a fast- food item.” ANSWER: Big Mac Index 2. Richard Feynman said that “all good theoretical physicists put [it] up on their wall and worry about it”. Several equations have been proposed to relate it to other unitless constants such as e and pi, but none of these gives an accurate value, nor has any sound theoretical support been provided. Arthur Eddington once claimed that it was exactly 1/136, and then revised his so-called proof when it was measured to be closer to 1/137. For ten points, identify the constant characterizing the strength of the electromagnetic force, signified by the letter alpha. ANSWER: (Sommerfeld) fine-structure constant (PROMPT on "alpha" before mentioned) 3. Andrew Hamilton Gault put up $100,000 to finance its formation, which officially took place on August 10th, 1914. Nine days later it was fully manned. Its members won two Victoria Crosses at Passchendaele and another at Parvillers, and participated in the Sicilian campaign in World War II. More recently, Opera- tion Apollo saw 700 members of its third battalion deployed to Afghanistan.

  • Conversations with Dallas & Travis Good (Of the Sadies)
Conversations with Dallas & Travis Good (of The Sadies) by Frank Goodman (11/2007, Puremusic.com) Our proclivity for Canadian music has slowly taken us by surprise over the years, and continues to do so. One of our favorite acts north of the border is The Sadies. We've reviewed and interviewed them throughout our history, and hope to capture them in a video interview sometime, as we did recently with their paisanos Blackie and the Rodeo Kings. For one thing, we never get to talk with bassist Sean Dean or drummer Mike Belitsky, which we'll have to remedy the next time around. The Good brothers, Dallas and Travis, are each fascinating and diverse characters that front the band. Travis is the kind of consumed and consummate guitarist that seems rarely to set the thing down, at home or on the road. Dallas is also a great player, but plays keys sometimes and gets more wrapped up in the lyric side of things as well. They are five years apart, and different to talk to, which makes the conversations interesting. After a rather monumental 2 disc Live record that featured a long list of luminary friends, The Sadies embarked on a soundtrack for the movie Tales Of The Rat Fink, about the life and times of the outrageous cartoonist Ed "Big Daddy" Roth, whose work swept through 60's culture. The Sadies were perfect for this film, since their breakneck instrumentals and genre bending attitudes ran parallel to the subject himself. Surf, Country, Psychedelia, Spaghetti Western, Punk, Bluegrass, Folk, Rock--it's all there in the Sadies music, and much more.
