How to Register: Register online at www.visitation.net/summer or at www.cadets.com/camps. All Jump Start, academic and enrichment class fees are due at the time of registration. For full- and half-day Junior Camp and Summer Camp participants, a $100 nonrefundable deposit is due at the time of registration (tuition will be invoiced monthly thereafter). The cancellation deadline is May 1, 2017, although spaces will continue to be granted until courses are full. After May 1, 2017, no refunds will be issued (regardless of attendance).

All classes and camps are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. On occasion we do not have enough students enrolled to fill a particular class. Families will be notified, and all payments will be refunded in the event that a class must be cancelled.

2 Summer Solution Visitation Summer Solution Program Information

Junior Summer Camp is for four- and five-year-old students entering Montessori preschool (at Visitation) and kindergarten (at any school) for the 2017-2018 school year. Three-year-old students who have attended a year of Montessori at Visitation are also eligible. Junior Summer Camp participants will do a variety of activities each day including story time, group project time, free choice time, rest time, snack time and enrichment class time. A portion of the Junior Camp day is spent with the school-age summer campers (no more than 25% of the total day.) During this time, a teacher is assigned to work exclusively with the Junior Summer Camp participants to ensure that their safety and capabilities are recognized.

Summer Camp is for students who will be entering grades one through six for the 2017-2018 school year. The program gives participants a fun camp experience with a wide variety of activities such as large group games, art projects, outside time, free choice and enrichment class time.

This year, eight enrichment weeks will be included in our Junior Camp and Summer Camp curriculum. During these weeks, campers will not only have the chance to enjoy daily camp activities, but they will also have the opportunity to participate in specialized week-long enrichment classes of their own choosing (morning & full-day campers only). During these weeks, a full five day per week commitment is required. (Field trips will be planned during the non-enrichment weeks in August.)

Junior Camp and Summer Camp are in session from June 12-August 23 and are open from 7 a.m.-6 p.m., Monday-Friday (Closed on July 4).

Junior Summer Camp Daily rate: $75.75/day Weekly rate: $298/week Half-day daily rate: (7 a.m.-noon OR 12:30-6 p.m.): $37.87/day

Summer Camp Weekly rate: $300/week AM weekly rate (7 a.m.-noon): $225/week PM weekly rate (12:30-6 p.m.): $195/week

Rates include enrichment class tuition, field trip admissions, milk, snacks and a t-shirt. Full-day campers must bring a bag lunch each day.

Short and non-enrichment weeks are pro-rated.

3 Enrichment Classes: Families who wish to register ONLY for enrichment classes may do so on an à la carte basis. Please be sure to check the course catalog for specific class dates, times, age ranges and rates. Please Note: A supervised snack and recess break from 10-11 a.m. is included in the schedule for all participants at no additional charge.

Enrichment classes are included in the Summer Camp and Junior Summer Camp curriculum and tuition. Students who register for Summer Camp are asked to select enrichment classes each week to fill the hours of 9 a.m.-noon.

Becoming Financially Literate Age Group: Boys & girls entering grades 9-12 Dates: July 24-28 Time: 9 a.m.-noon Description: Practical lessons to help students spend and save wisely by using online, meaningful content in real-life scenarios. Jump Start Math Age Group: Boys & girls entering grades 1-10 Dates: June 19-July 21, Monday-Friday (No class July 4) Times: 8-9 a.m., 9-10 a.m., 10-11 a.m., 11 a.m.-noon Description: This is a remedial math program that addresses specific skills children need to be successful in mathematics. Children will be instructed in individual or small group settings and will work on computation and the development of problem solving skills. Heavy emphasis will be placed on building conceptual understanding. This class is offered in collaboration with the University of St. Thomas Department of Special Education. Student evaluations describing the specific skills addressed and follow-up recommendations will be provided at the end of the summer session. Fee: $500

5 Jump Start Reading Age Group: Boys & girls entering grades 1-10 Dates: June 19-July 21, Monday-Friday (No class July 4) Times: 8-9 a.m., 9-10 a.m., 10-11 a.m., 11 a.m.-noon Description: Instruction is designed to improve spelling, word attack, reading comprehension and fluency. These sessions are provided in individual or small group settings using the Orton Gillingham approach or similar appropriate multi- sensory approaches for teaching reading and spelling. This class is offered in collaboration with the University of St. Thomas Department of Special Education. Student evaluations describing the specific skills addressed and follow-up recommendations will be provided at the end of the summer session. Fee: $500

Jump Start Writing Age Group: Boys & girls entering grades 3-10 Dates: June 19-July 21, Monday-Friday (No class July 4) Times: 8-9 a.m., 9-10 a.m., 10-11 a.m., 11 a.m.-noon Description: Instruction is designed to strengthen writing skills using the University of Kansas Writing Strategies. This instruction will take place in individual or small group settings. Students will be assessed at the beginning of the session to determine starting points for instruction. Based on this assessment, the student will be placed in one of the following: -The Fundamentals/Proficiency Strand – Instruction will emphasize writing complete sentences. Students will have the opportunity to write simple, compound, complex and/or compound complex sentences based on individual progress. -The Paragraph/Theme Writing Strand For– students who demonstrate mastery in writing with a variety of sentence types. Instruction will first focus on writing well-structured paragraphs and may progress, based on individual progress, to writing a theme (multi-paragraph paper).

6 Academics Study Skills and Test Taking Age Group: Boys & girls entering grades 6-9 Dates: June 19-29, Monday-Thursday each week Times: 8-10 a.m. (Entering grades 6-7) 10 a.m.-noon (Entering grades 8-9) Description: Clear the path to better grades. Set goals for a great start to the new school year! Study Skills and Test Taking teaches students entering grades six through nine how to get organized and get rid of the roadblocks to learning. Students will learn strategies for organizing materials and overcoming that ever present procrastination hurdle. Practice with note taking while listening in class will also be emphasized. In addition, students will learn effective ways to read texts and take notes. Strategies for good test-taking skills will be taught and practiced. Take the stress and anxiety out of test taking when you learn how to understand the test questions, use time effectively, and think actively and logically. Fee: $350 Instructor: Sarah Diebold

An exciting, weeklong summer adventure awaits with activities that explore connections between science, technology, engineering, and innovation and sharpen their 21st century STEM skills. A program of the National Inventors Hall of Fame, Camp Invention allows children in kindergarten through sixth grade to experience real- world problem solving, creative thinking, invention, and teamwork. Children work together to transform the terrain and ecosystem of a distant exoplanet. Ceramic Art Studio Age Group: Boys & girls entering grades 5-10 Dates: June 19-23 Time: 9 a.m.-noon Description: This class is a great opportunity for students to learn about, or enrich their knowledge of, ceramics. Students will learn about different wheel throwing, handbuilding, and glazing techniques. They will have the chance to build pieces on the wheel and work with a variety of handbuilding techniques such as slab building, carving, sculpturing, and coil building. One week after the class is finished, students will come back to STA to pick up their masterpieces. We will make soap using a few different approaches: the cold process, melt and pour process, and hot process. Coming to , Searching for Family History Age Group: Boys & girls entering grades 5-7 Dates: June 12-16 Times: 1-4 p.m. Description: Keeping in touch with family can be a difficult task. Families today are living in different communities, different states and sometimes in different countries. Personal contact with family members has been reduced and family stories from the past are not being told, making it more difficult for children to learn about their heritage. A main objective of this course is to encourage students to gather information about their roots. This can be accomplished by interviewing family members by telephone, e-mail, letter and in person. Students will see the effects of social movements, economics and political events on the lives of their ancestors and realize how important and personally valuable their family history is. The culminating activity will use the information discovered throughout the week to create or add to a family tree and a family story. Drawing, Doodling and Creating an Artist Journal Age Group: Boys & girls entering grades 3-6 Dates: July 17-21 Times: 9-10 a.m. (Entering grades 3-4) 11 a.m.-noon (Entering 5-6) Description: In this doodler workshop, professional illustrator Nancy Meyers will help young artists discover different ways to inspire ideas. Don’t fear a blank sheet of paper, because illustrations will always start with a squiggling line or a big swish of paint to see where student’s imaginations will lead them! Students will also have the opportunity to look at the sketchbook pages of famous artists to see how rough sketches are not always perfect but an important step in the creative process. Engineering a World of Difference Age Group: Girls entering grades 5-8 Dates: July 10-14 Times: 1-4 p.m. Description: Engineers design solutions to problems to help make the world a safer, more sustainable place to live. In this session, participants will explore issues from around the world and the work that engineers do to overcome such matters. Hands-on design challenges will allow participants to work in teams and apply their own engineering skills to solve problems being faced by real-world engineers. We will discover the wonder of rocks, fossils, dinosaurs and more. This class will give participants the chance to start their own rock collection, grow a crystal, and make a fossil. It’s a Girl Thing 2.0 Age Group: Girls entering grades 5-7 Dates: July 24-28 Times: 9 a.m.-noon Description: Through fun games and activities, you will learn how to be more kind, connected and confident. In this fun and interactive class, girls will learn how to be mindful in thoughts and deeds, how to cultivate healthy friendships, how to develop healthy eating habits, and the importance of being physically active. Each day will include a fun workout such as yoga, kickboxing, cardio and strength-training. 13 Learn to be a Film Critic! Age Groups: Boys & girls entering grades 4-9 Dates: June 12-16 (Entering grades 4-6) July 17-21 (Entering grades 7-9) Times: 9 a.m.-noon Description: Do you love to watch films and talk about them? This class will expose you to a variety of film genres and provide an instructor-led forum to discuss the components of a successful film: story, casting, cinematography, edits, costumes, and sound to name just a few! Each day we will watch a film classic and then discuss why the film was successful. Film titles will be age appropriate and sent to participant families prior to viewing. LEGO® Robotics Age Group: Boys & girls entering grades 4-8 Dates: June 26-30 (Beginner) and July 17-21 (Advanced) Time: 9 a.m.-noon Description: In this engaging, hands-on class, students will exercise their creativity by building and programming an autonomous LEGO Mindstorms™ robot. They will work in teams of two (friends are encouraged to sign up together to create teams) to design and program their robot to complete challenges from FIRST LEGO League competitions. The last day of each session will feature a mini competition – family and friends are welcome and prizes awarded. Additional opportunities for team building, coding, and developing presentation skills will be explored. Students will not keep their robots after the class. Beginner class will introduce students to a wide range of concepts used in real world mechanical engineering and computer programming environments. No previous experience is required.

Advanced class is for students who participated in last summer’s LEGO Robotics class or have previous experience with the program. Let’s Make a Book … From Scratch! Age Group: Boys & girls entering grades 1-4 Dates: June 26-30 Times: 9 a.m.-noon Description: Join Ms. Z in this creative, book-making class! We will start the week by making homemade paper for the pages of our book. Next, we will spend time writing a story (working on setting, plot and character formation.) On the last day of class, we will bind our new book together and share it with our classmates! Each child will come home with a beautiful, handmade book keepsake. Magical World of Fairies and Gnomes Age Group: Boys & girls entering Montessori preschool-grade 3 Dates: July 17-21 Times: 9-10 a.m. (Entering grades 1-3) 11 a.m.-noon (Entering Montessori preschool-kindergarten) Description: Come join us and explore the magical world of fairies and gnomes. In this class, campers will have the opportunity to make fantasy fairy/gnome gardens, imagine and tell stories about the gardens, construct mini fairy and gnome furniture, create fairy jars and jars of giggles. Marvelously Messy! Age Group: Boys & girls entering Montessori preschool-grade 2 Dates: June 19-23 Times: 11 a.m.-noon Description: Come get your hands dirty while making and playing with some slimy, sticky and gooey substances. Participants will create and experiment with several different types of Play-Doh, slime, clay and decoupage. Join us in a week-long journey through the Star Wars saga and learn what it takes to become your favorite Star Wars character! Puppet Training Workshop Age Group: Boys & girls entering grades 3-6 Dates: July 10-14 Times: 11 a.m.-noon Description: This class is all about the technique and training it takes to work and play with puppets. Students will learn the techniques used to make puppets come to life. The training will be under the direction of Mr. Raymo, who has a background in puppet work through his theatre arts degree as well as his work performing in Avenue Q, a musical that uses hand puppets in the production. Students will learn about how puppets move — similar to those seen on Sesame Street. Fee: $100 Instructor: Nikko Raymo

Puppets Galore! Some of the different puppets will include: sock puppets, bag puppets, felt puppets and hat puppets. Join us in this super “green” class where we will use recyclable materials to plan, design and create. 24 Athletics Introduction to Gun Safety & Marksmanship Age Group: Boys & girls entering grades 5-8 Dates: June 12-16 Time: 9-11 a.m. Description: This introduction to gun safety is not a Minnesota DNR Certification Course, however, we will introduce the basics of gun safety and qualification using Saint Thomas Academy’s precision .177 caliber air rifles. Students will learn gun safety, operation, familiarization, and Marksmanship Qualifications procedures. All students will implement “hands on” operations in an attempt to earn their qualification badge. No equipment is needed to participate; note-taking material is optional; comfortable clothing (shorts, jeans, t-shirt, gym shoes) is recommended.
