In March Rupert Otten told us about some of the families and martyrs from Monmouthshire and Herefordshire involved in 17th century Catholic recusancy, including the influential Gunter family who built the Gunter mansion in 1625. He described the archaeological survey of the house conducted in 2018 by the Plas Gunter Mansion project .     Landscape Character Area 13: THE BLACK MOUNTAINS LANDSCAPE CHARACTER AREA 13: THE BLACK MOUNTAINS Broad Landscape Type: MOUNTAINS AND VALLEYS Description Location and Context This large LCA includes the highest land associated with the Black Mountains. It is located on the eastern edge of the National Park, and its character extends beyond the National Park boundary into England. To the north is the Wye Valley Foothills LCA, to the west the Eastern Usk Valley LCA and to the south Skirrid and Sugar Loaf LCA. Summary Description This LCA is largely defined by its topography: a series of broad ridges running north-south and separated by narrow, steep-sided valleys. It contains some of the highest land in the National Park- the summit of Waun Fach is over 800m above sea level. The higher moorlands are empty and remote, contrasting with the more pastoral and settled valleys between them. This is a rich archaeological landscape, with a concentration of surviving prehistoric features on the higher land, as well as the Medieval Llanthony Priory in the Vale of Ewyas. The valleys contain a network of ancient farms, fields, woodland and winding lanes. View south-west from Twmpa, showing the ridges of the Black Mountains Historical Development of the Landscape This landscape has been shaped over several millennia, with features surviving from many phases of human occupation. The earliest monuments are prehistoric cairns and barrows representing an extensive ritual landscape, and there are also early defensive sites including the prominent surviving Iron Age hillforts at Table Mountain. Surviving Medieval landscape features include Llanthony Priory, Cwmyoy church and many of the lanes and farms.

The art of Turner and his contemporaries, the poetry of Wordsworth, have brought fame and fascination and drawn people to be moved by these remarkable ruins set against wooded hills and dramatic scenery, and inspired them to write, draw, paint and compose. For the next few months until September 28, there is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the world renowned artworks that these sites have inspired, at the two nearby museums of Chepstow and Abergavenny. These two Monmouthshire museums have worked to gather together the best and most interesting art from the National collections in London as well as Wales, and from major museums throughout the UK to create exhibitions devoted to Llanthony Priory at Abergavenny Museum and Tintern Abbey at Chepstow Museum. Both exhibitions feature works by JMW Turner, with watercolours of Tintern Abbey coming from the Ashmolean, V&A, British Museum and Tate, and bringing pencil drawings and sketches alongside finished pieces of both sites in both shows.

You can follow the story of the start of the conquest of south Wales and the struggle to maintain supremacy at a cluster of Cadw sites. The first castle to be built by the Normans in Wales, Chepstow, the nearby Tintern Abbey, and Monmouth Castle were powerful statements of intent to subdue and stabilise Wales. The three castles of Grosmont, White and Skenfrith were built in the Monnow Valley to control the route between Hereford and Monmouth. Just 13 minutes drive from Chepstow you’ll find Tintern Abbey, the best-preserved medieval abbey in Wales. Founded by Marcher Lord Walter de Clare as a spiritual base for the Norman lords on the England Wales border, Tintern was only the second Cistercian foundation in Britain. The present-day remains are a mixture of building works covering a 400-year period between 1131 and 1536 until the abbey was surrendered to King Henry VIII’s officials. Very little remains of the first buildings but you can marvel at the vast windows and later decorative details displayed in the walls, doorways and soaring archways. If you’re feeling energetic, take a strenuous uphill walk to the ‘Devil’s Pulpit’ for a wonderful bird’s eye view of this great Gothic abbey.
