Open Access Author Fund Annual Report FY19
The KU Open Access Author Fund Annual Report (July 2018 - June 2019) The KU One University Open Access Author Fund (OAAF) had an active year receiving many applications and publishing more articles in open access journals for which the OAAF provided at least partial funding. The number of applications received remained stable for several years but declined slightly in FY19. However, competition for the awards has increased due to rising article processing charges making the criteria and point system even more important. All the articles paid for and published so far have been placed in the KU ScholarWorks institutional repository under “Open Access.” Included in this report are the statistics for FY 2019 in the following tables: Table 1. Statistics for FY 2019 When compared to the figures from the previous fiscal year (July 2017-June 2018), there was a 17% decrease in the number of applications received and therefore a smaller number of applications that were rejected. The number of awards that were offered and paid were similar. -

ABSTRACT Predatory hornets are considered as one of the major constraints to beekeeping industry. Therefore, its incidence and predation rate was studied throughout the year at two locations rural and forest areas of mid-hill in Laliptur district during 2016/017 to 2017/018. Observation was made on the number of hornet and honeybee captured by hornet in three different times of the day for three continuous minutes every fortnightly on five honeybee colonies. During the study period, major hornet species captured around the honeybee apiary at both locations were, Vespa velutina Lepeletier, Vespa basalis Smith, Vespa tropica (Linnaeus) and Vespa mandarina Smith. The hornet incidence varied significantly between the years and locations along with different observation dates. -

Chapter 6 Acoustic Communication in the Nocturnal Lepidoptera Michael D. Greenfield Abstract Pair formation in moths typically involves pheromones, but some pyra- loid and noctuoid species use sound in mating communication. The signals are generally ultrasound, broadcast by males, and function in courtship. Long-range advertisement songs also occur which exhibit high convergence with commu- nication in other acoustic species such as orthopterans and anurans. Tympanal hearing with sensitivity to ultrasound in the context of bat avoidance behavior is widespread in the Lepidoptera, and phylogenetic inference indicates that such perception preceded the evolution of song. This sequence suggests that male song originated via the sensory bias mechanism, but the trajectory by which ances- tral defensive behavior in females—negative responses to bat echolocation sig- nals—may have evolved toward positive responses to male song remains unclear. Analyses of various species offer some insight to this improbable transition, and to the general process by which signals may evolve via the sensory bias mechanism. 6.1 Introduction The acoustic world of Lepidoptera remained for humans largely unknown, and this for good reason: It takes place mostly in the middle- to high-ultrasound fre- quency range, well beyond our sensitivity range. Thus, the discovery and detailed study of acoustically communicating moths came about only with the use of electronic instruments sensitive to these sound frequencies. Such equipment was invented following the 1930s, and instruments that could be readily applied in the field were only available since the 1980s. But the application of such equipment M. D. Results obtained that 72% respondents commercially rearing Apis millifera and 11% rearing Apis cerana. Farmers having 22-117 numbers of hives found maximum (77%). Maximum number of hives rearing found was 500 by commercial bee keepers. Average hive number and Average productivity found were 98 and 31.2kg per hive per year (Apis millifera). -

Res. 41(2): 297-310, June 2016 EFFECT OF STORAGE DURATION ON THE STORED PUPAE OF PARASITOID Bracon hebetor (Say) AND ITS IMPACT ON PARASITOID QUALITY M. S. ALAM1, M. Z. ALAM2, S. N. ALAM3 M. R. U. MIAH4 AND M. I. H. MIAN5 Abstract The ecto-endo larval parasitoid, Bracon hebetor (Say) is an important bio- control agent. Effective storage methods for B. hebetor are essential for raising its success as a commercial bio-control agent against lepidopteran pests. The study was undertaken to determine the effect of storage duration on the pupae of Bracon hebetor in terms of pupal survival, adult emergence, percent parasitism, female and male longevity, female fecundity and sex ratio. Three to four days old pupae were stored for 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 weeks at 4 ± 1oC. The ranges of time for adult emergence from stored pupae, production of total adult, survivability of pupae, parasitism of host larvae by the parasitoid, longevity of adult female and male and fecundity were 63.0 -7.5 days, 6.8-43.8/50 host larvae, 13.0-99.5%, 0.0 -97.5%, 0.00-20.75 days, 0.00-17.25 days and 0.00- 73.00/50 female, respectively. The time of adult emergence and mortality of pupae increased but total number of adult emergence, survivability of pupae, longevity of adult female and male decreased gradually with the progress of storage period of B. hebetor pupae. The prevalence of male was always higher than that of female. -

Abstract Decline in honey bee colonies possess a serious threat to biodiversity and agriculture. Prior detection of the stresses with the help of biomarkers and their management ensures honey bee's survivability. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) is a promising biomarker to monitor exposure of honey bees towards environmental pollutants. In this preliminary study, we measured AChE activity in forager honey bees collected from six districts of Nepal, Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, Chitwan, Rupandehi and Pyuthan during autumn and winter seasons. We estimated AChE tissue and specific activities from bee's heads using commercial kit based on Ellman assay and protein concentration using Lowry assay. In total, we collected 716 foragers belonging to A. cerana, A. mellifera and A. dorsata. -

Of these the greater wax moth Galleria melonella poses the most serious economic threat to bee keepers. The braconid Apanteles galleriae, a parasitoid of the greater wax moth, has been detected for the first time in Kenya. There is no evidence of the presence of the ectoparasitic mite Varroa destructor. Die Schlupfwespe Apanteles galleriae, ein Parasitoid der Großen Wachsmotte, konnte erstmals für Kenia nachgewiesen werden. -
