Crofton Roman Villa | To interest and inspire children in their heritage, especially in their local area; to help them learn more about the Ro- mans, their conquest of Britain and domestic and social life, through activities, displays, events and discussions. Activities such as; mosaic mak- ing, brass rubbings of Roman soldier figures, handling and drawing artefacts, dressing up as Romans and playing (replica) Roman games. We also have special events in the holidays.

1. Fun with Pots | Discover what the Romans used for cooking, eating and drinking. You will be able to handle real Roman pottery nearly 2,000 years old. Then you can make your own clay pot to take home! 2. Horrible Habits & Costume | Find out all about horrible habits through the ages from the Celts to the Victorians! You can choose to make a mask and get an information sheet from your favourite period in history to take home. Or you can make a collage picture of a person rom your favourite period in history.

Judo Club | The children will be learning Judo techniques in a controlled, safe environment. They will eventually demonstrate what they have learned by grading and earn tabs for their belts to show what level they are at. They can also work towards taking part in competitions. Along- side this, they will be adhering to the Judo code, which is a set of ethics created by the sport’s founder. The code consists of Courtesy, Courage, Friendship, Honesty, Honour, Modesty, Respect and Self-Control. Judo is great as it will keep the children active, teach them morals, self-de- fence and it’s an Olympic sport. On the first mat (ages 5 – 7) there is a trophy awarded each week for the person who worked well and tried really hard. For the older children there is a monthly award starting in January Darwin Day | Charles Creepy Critters | Join us for Charles’ Creepy Critters at . Get hands-on, close-up with some of the exotic animals that Darwin himself might have met on his travels and studied here at Down House. Meet the likes of Snakes, Lizards, Tarantulas and Tortoises and we talk all about their fascinating abilities that shaped Darwin’s Theories of Evolution and Natural Selection. *Booking tickets for this event is essential, as places are limited.

Discover with Darwin | Join the man himself, Charles Darwin and explore evolution at its birthplace as you delve daringly into the mysteries of science. Ever wondered why giraffes have long necks? Why a penguin can’t fly? Why a monkey has a tail? Discover all this and more at Down House. Each workshop will take approximately 40 minutes and will involve storytelling and hands-on activities of a Darwinian theme. Tickets will be available to purchase at the event site on the day.
