A REPORT ON INDIAN TOWNSHIP PASSAMAQUODDY TRIBAL LANDS IN THE VICINITY OF PRINCETON, MAINE Anthony J. Kaliss 1971 Introduction to 1971 Printing Over two years have passed since I completed the research work for this report and during those years first one thing and ttan another prevented its final completion and printing. The main credit for the final preparation and printing goes to the Division of Indian Services of the Catholic Diocese of Portland and the American Civil Liberities Union of Maine. The Dioscese provided general assistance from its office staff headed by Louis Doyle and particular thanks is due to Erline Paul of Indian Island who did a really excellent job of typing more than 50 stencils of title abstracts, by their nature a real nuisance to type. The American Civil Liberities Union contrib uted greatly by undertaking to print the report Xtfhich will come to some 130 pages. Finally another excellent typist must be thanked and that is Edward Hinckley former Commissioner of Indian Affairs who also did up some 50 stencils It is my feeling that this report is more timely than ever. The Indian land problems have still not been resolved, but more and more concern is being expressed by Indians and non-Indians that something be done. Hopefully the appearance of this report at this time will help lead to some definite action whether in or out of the courts. Further research on Indian lands and trust funds remains to be done. The material, I believe, is available and it is my hope that this report will stimulate someone to undertake the necessary work. -

South Central Oklahoma Workforce Area Briefing May 2017 Overview The South Central Oklahoma Workforce Development Area is composed of eight Oklahoma counties: Caddo, Comanche, Cotton, Grady, Jefferson, McClain, Stephens, and Tillman. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, this combined region of Oklahoma covers 7,246 square miles, making it the third largest of the state’s workforce areas in land mass. Over 312,000 Oklahoma citizens live in the eight‐county area – approximately 8% of the state’s total population. Three cities in the area boast populations of 10,000 residents or more, including Lawton, Duncan, and Chickasha. Note that for simplicity, the South Central Oklahoma Workforce Development Area will generally be referenced throughout this report as the “Area.” Sources for all data are cited. The most common data source utilized is EMSI, data release 2017.2. Population Breakdown by County The city of Lawton, the county seat of Comanche 2016 Area Percentage of Population by County, is the largest city in County the Area with an estimated population of 97,589. Comanche County, the Stephens, 14% most populous County in the Area, is home to a total McClain, 13% of 125,003 individuals, representing 40.1% of the Grady, 18% Caddo, 9% population of the Area. ALABAMA Alabama Council on Human Relations, Inc. Auburn, AL $23,400 – Comprehensive Counseling Alabama Council on Human Relations, Inc. (ACHR) was established in 1954 to work for equal rights, opportunities, and liberties for all residents of Alabama. ACHR was awarded HUD-certified housing counseling status some 13 years ago. That status continues to be an integral part of the agency’s comprehensive efforts to improve housing conditions for low-income families and single residents in Alabama. Housing counseling services provided include pre-purchase, delinquency/default, and rental. During 2004- 2005 fiscal year, over 76 clients were served. Community Action Agency of Northwest Alabama, Inc. Florence, AL $30,000 – Comprehensive Counseling Incorporated in 1965, the Community Action Agency of Northwest Alabama, Inc. is a private, nonprofit corporation that provides services to Lauderdale, Colbert, and Franklin counties. The agency exists to “empower low-income individuals, families, and communities to achieve self-sufficiency through advocacy resource mobilization and service delivery.” As HUD-certified housing counseling agency, the Community Action Agency has operated for over 25 years, providing services including budgeting, tenant rights and responsibilities, mortgage repayment plans, homeless prevention, and homebuyer education. Community Action Partnership of North Alabama, Inc. Decatur, AL $47,181 – Comprehensive Counseling Community Action Partnership of North Alabama (CPNA) is a private, nonprofit organization governed by a tri-party community board of directors incorporated to address the causes and consequences of poverty. In addition to the eight Northern Alabama counties it serves, the Partnership’s legislatively approved service area includes Morgan, Collman, and Lawrence counties. The CPNA served 411 client families during the 2004-2005 fiscal year, strengthening community neighborhoods and helping low- income families acquire assets necessary for independent living. -

Despite the increasing level of fieldwork and excavation across the region, there has been comparatively little synthesis, and the discourse remains tied to historical sources dominated by the Victoria County History series, the Agrarian History of England and Wales volumes, and more recently by the Historic County Atlases (see below). Nonetheless, the Thames Valley has a rich and distinctive regional character that developed tremendously from 1500 onwards. This chapter delves into these past 500 years to review the evidence for settlement and farming. It focusses on how the dominant medieval pattern of villages and open-field agriculture continued initially from the medieval period, through the dramatic changes brought about by Parliamentary enclosure and the Agricultural Revolution, and into the 20th century which witnessed new pressures from expanding urban centres, infrastructure and technology. Indiana farms were usually diversified operations that practiced a high degree of self- sufficiency. This photo of the Helton- Mayo Farm captures the overall layout of the farmstead. Don’t forget to give your application the big picture as well as the details! This nomination documents a southern Indiana farm that includes an early vernacular brick house, log barn, various special-use farm buildings, as well as a 1950 arched-roof dairy barn. The authors drew on census data, local histories, and evidence offered in the buildings themselves to explain how the property meets the National Register Criteria in the areas of agriculture, settlement and architecture. If you’re having trouble classifying the vernacular architecture of your farm, the Indiana Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology can help. The map provides the reader with a sense of the organization of the farm and helps define contributing (historic) from non- contributing (non-historic) buildings. Brad A. Bays, a geographer at Oklahoma State University, conducted the research. The survey involved a study area of87 acres in the western part of Stillwater as specifiedby the survey and planning subgrant stipulations prepared by the SHPO. The surveyresulted in the minimal level documentation of213 properties within the designated study area. Minimal level documentation included the completion of the Historic Preservation Resource Identification Form and at least two elevation photographs for each property. This document reportsthe findings of the survey and provides an analysis of these findingsto guide the SHPO's long term preservation planning process. This reportis organized into several parts. A narrative historic context of the study area from the date of earliest development ( 1927) to the mid-twentieth century (1955) is provided as a general basis for interpreting and evaluating the surveyresults.
