WELCOME

A warm Irish welcome to the 55th Anniversary Dinner of the Ireland-U.S. Council . As President of the Council it is always a pleasant duty for me to Aextend greetings to this annual occasion when we celebrate, on behalf of the entire Council membership in the United States and throughout Ireland, the Council’s continued engagement of our core mission.

This past year has seen much change in Ireland and in the United States. However, from the vantage point we occupy in the Ireland-U.S. Council , I am happy to report that the business bonds and commercial connections between America and Ireland, North and South, have never ever been stronger, deeper or more durable than they are now. Brian W. Stack It has been ten long years since the calamitous real estate crash which precipitated a financial industry cataclysm that was especially brutal and harsh in Ireland. What a difference can be made in a decade with careful, smart, energetic and prudent managing of a difficult economic problem.

Tonight the Ireland-U.S. Council is delighted to hail, through our honoree Bernard Byrne, CEO of AIB Group, the milestone return to financial health achieved by one of Ireland’s largest banking groups. The sale into private hands of a large chunk of AIB Group stock ownership by Ireland’s Government marks a true watershed event. With the benefit of hindsight we can clearly see the wisdom of the Government in Dublin in rescuing Ireland’s banking system ten years ago. It stands as testimony to the faith which people in Ireland have in the system of free enterprise.

I must always underline how thankful we are for the support and participation received during this past year from Council members and from so many benefactors, patrons and sponsors. The encouragement, assistance and support you have offered has been most heartening. It has also been essential in helping us to sustain the organization’s roster of programs and activities during this past year.

Because of your support, we have been enabled to continue to engage the core mission of the organization in meaningful ways. In working to enhance and strengthen those important business bonds and commercial connections between the United States and Ireland, we hope to make a worthwhile contribution to the betterment of the economic circumstances of all the people in the United States and in Ireland, north and south. Improved and expanded investment, trade and tourism in both directions between America and Ireland is not a zero-sum game – it betters the lives, livelihoods and economic circumstances of everybody.

The very important business links that connect America and Ireland in capital investment, trade, tourism, technology transfer and so much more have flourished during this past year. These are tangible and resilient connections that require smart attention and careful nurturing. Our hope is that in the coming year, we in the Ireland-U.S. Council can assist the process of strengthening and expanding these bonds that bind America aBnd Irriealand eSver ctloasecr.k Brian W. The Council received many favorable comments and reactions to the event which we co-hosted with Ibec. Here are a couple ..

I greatly enjoyed your Business Summit in New York in March and saw fi rst-hand the scale of the work that the Council does in promoting Irish-US ties right across the business, politics, media, the arts and education. It is a great privilege for me to accept an Award from such Two Thumbs Up: Joe McHugh and Mick Mulvaney were cool with the proceedings. an organization.

AIB fully intends to contribute positively to “building connections” between Ireland and the United States. That relationship has never been more important than it is now. Ireland’s economic recovery has been due in large measure to our trade relationship with the U.S. and I strongly believe that, in the longer-term and in spite of the many challenges, Ireland can present itself as a bridge between two major economic regions on either side of the Atlantic.

Bernard Byrne CEO AIB Group

I hope that this helped give the message to the Administration in some small way of Ireland’s commitment to the United States in terms of jobs as had been repeated a number of times during your Summit. I am happy to share our story both here and in Ireland if it helps to advance Ireland-U.S. relations in any way so feel free to reach out at any time.

2017 Council Golf Day To Support Council Student Work Experience Scholarships Program Featured Connie Doolan Memorial Trophy Council’s 15th Annual Golf Day Sponsored by

his year’s enjoyable and successful Ireland-U.S. Council Golf Day in New York was held under sunny Tskies and featured The Connie Doolan Memorial Trophy , sponsored by Diageo (our thanks to Council Board Member Bill Falvey). Eddie Dowling of The Padded Wagon was the Chairman of the event.

The Trophy commemorates Council member and long-time Guinness executive Cornelius F. Doolan. This marked the 15th successive year when a full field of Council members and guests teed it up at Rye Golf Club in Westchester County, a few miles north of Manhattan on the last day of July in 2017. Mother Nature played a starring role this year – maybe to make up for last year’s late-in-the-day rain.

The Council’s 2017 Student Work Experience Scholarships Program , which benefits from the New York Golf Day surplus revenues, was also highlighted during the presentations at the post-golf dinner part of the proceedings. Billy Condon, Vice President of Marketing at Tourism Ireland , which was a sponsor of the event, addressed the gathering.

Council’s 2017 Golf Day in Ireland – Much-Improved Weather Lifted Spirits in County Wicklow

Aer Lingus & Northern Trust Bank Were Sponsors

he Ireland-U.S. Council Golf Day in Ireland, with a full-field turnout, was held on Friday, September 8 at Tthe picturesque Dún Laoghaire Golf Club . In planning The signs pointed to a great day. this year’s event, all the fingers were crossed that we would not get a third straight year of lousy weather. Looking on the bright side, whatever weather turned up would have to be an improvement because it could not have been worse than last year. So it turned out to be a mostly sunny day – with brief bouts of Winter and Spring also showing up to remind all that this was, after all, golf in Ireland!!

The club’s course – three separate nine-hole layouts featuring the most attractive elements of both American and Irish golf course design – intelligent bunkering, deceit of the eye from the teebox and greens that are challenging but not unfair. It is a popular venue for our annual golf day in Ireland with Council members and their guests.

The course is located in the lower range of the Dublin Northern Trust bank was a sponsor. Mountains, just above the village of Enniskerry with majestic views of the Sugar Loaf Mountain in County Wicklow. Dublin Bay sits in the distance and is visible from most parts of the course.

The Council’s Golf Day in Ireland this year was generously supported by Aer Lingus and Northern Trust Bank . The Council’s Ireland Golf Day is a regular September calendar event. Next year’s has been set for Friday, September 7, 2018. Mark your calendar now. The occasion features great prizes, a splendid venue, great fun – always ingredients for a successful outcome.
