Date completed: July 2005 Problem The question guiding my dissertation research was: In what ways do the writings of Wendell Berry, reflecting his sociological imagination, address and advance leadership theory with specific regard for the issue of agrarian values? Method I used the writings of Wendell Berry as a modified case study for my inductive, theoretical, exploratory research in a qualitative vein. As I reviewed his writings, I identified his moral ideology and extracted his value-set. Along the way, I observed Berry’s use of a method promoted by C. Wright Mills in his book The Sociological Imagination (1959). Since sociological imagination finds its use within the value Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner. Further reproduction prohibited without permission. conflicts of social life, Berry’s insights are instructive for those in business leadership. Such leaders face frequent value conflicts that have, for example, relational, economic, and moral implications. Furthermore, I have taken validation from the sociology of literature. Though not found in standard textbooks, the legitimacy of this approach is intact. I kept it in mind while studying Berry’s writings. I also placed his work against the literature on leadership and business in order to challenge assumptions found there. Finally, my exploration took me into multi-disciplinary terrain. This required a method that combined intuitive reading with good record keeping in order to identify, consider, and confirm cross-disciplinary connections. Conclusions I synthesized a series of descriptive phrases for good leaders—those more committed to being virtuous than to being profitable. The good leader “gets it right,” demonstrates “foresight,” and sees society through the grid of the sociological imagination. The good leader understands a good economy is shaped primarily by the ideas of health and stewardship, not profit and exploitation. The good leader rethinks his/her values with a concern for a sustainable world. The good leader manages with care and honesty by walking farther into the places, communities, and sources of both nutrition and materials. The good leader equips workers to see the social milieu for what it is, empowers them for independent and interdependent work, and eagerly guides them in the way of moral virtue. I mean why did we choose to dedicate this issue to technology? I love all of this stuff! It makes my life so much easier, right? I get to keep in contact with my sister and her kids in Minnesota. I can find the answer to ANY question in mere seconds. I save so much money all the time with all of these internet “coupon” offers. I can look at pictures from that hike my former co-worker went on last month… oh wait… oops. Wow, technology can make me feel really good, I mean really give me that feeling of fulfillment… for a little while. In her article, Ellen Rehg shows us that when broken down “technology” essentially comes to mean the study of art, skill, or craft. But wait, what about posting hilarious videos of a kitten stuck in a tissue box? The “technology” that I use in my life seems to bring me away from art, skills and crafts. I can watch shows on the internet with people using their skills, commenting on art, or purchasing things that were once highly valued crafts, but for the most part I feel pretty disconnected.

Mason Department of Education, Indiana University Amazing Ourselves to Death: Neil Postman’s Brave New World Revisited by Lance Strate. 2014. New York: Peter Lang. Media scholar Neil Postman wrote approximately 25 books during his career, the most influential of which was titled Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourse in the Age of Show Business. In his book, Postman (1985) claims that the epistemology of television, which had become the dominant media form by the 1980s, had eroded the substance and coherence of public discourse, which increasingly took the form of entertainment. More recently, the media environment has undergone further dramatic changes with the emergence of the Internet, Web 2.0, and social media. Postman died in 2003, and while he continued to publish until shortly before his death, he never updated his most popular work to account for these changes. Postman’s former student, media ecologist Lance Strate, now takes up this task. His new book examines Postman’s positions in light of the contemporary media landscape. His goals are twofold: first, to summarize Postman’s positions and demonstrate their continued relevance; second, to present Postman’s approach to media analysis, which is grounded in the field that Postman originated, media ecology. Speaking with authority does not mean speaking charmingly or cunningly. It means that the speaker's words are lived: the words come out of struggle and speak to the struggling self within us.   • The Wendell Berry Farming Program Preparing a New Generation of Farmers
    The Wendell Berry Farming Program Preparing a New Generation of Farmers Published in 1977, Wendell Berry's seminal work, The Unsettling of America: Culture and Agriculture, describes the peril facing rural ​ ​ communities. Among other issues, he discusses how higher learning institutions in this country approach farming through the lens of industrial agriculture rather than teaching nature-based, neighborly farming. Forty years after the publication of Unsettling we see how this miseducation has perpetuated economic, ecological, and social crises across rural America. The ​ Wendell Berry Farming Program of Sterling College was created to respond to these crises and offer hope for the future of farming and rural communities. The Berry Center advocates for farmers, land conserving communities, and healthy local economies. Sterling College, a liberal arts college focusing on environmental stewardship, pioneered teaching sustainable agriculture, inspired by Wendell Berry and others. These two organizations have collaborated to establish an educational model that prepares a new generation of farmers to help reinvigorate rural communities. In 2019, Sterling College will launch the Wendell Berry Farming Program based on the lifework and writing of Wendell Berry. The program will draw upon the College’s contributions to the agricultural movement in Vermont and, with the expertise and resources of The Berry Center, we will establish a new site for undergraduate agricultural education in Henry County, Kentucky that will both prepare a new generation of farmers and will serve as an educational model for rural America. The Wendell Berry Farming Program will inspire the most comprehensive change in agricultural education since the advent of the land grant universities and one that addresses the failure of higher education to use nature as its measure in preparing the next generation of farmers.
