Decapod crustacean grooming: Functional morphology, adaptive value, and phylogenetic significance N RAYMOND T.BAUER Center for Crustacean Research, University of Southwestern Louisiana, USA ABSTRACT Grooming behavior is well developed in many decapod crustaceans. Antennular grooming by the third maxillipedes is found throughout the Decapoda. Gill cleaning mechanisms are qaite variable: chelipede brushes, setiferous epipods, epipod-setobranch systems. However, microstructure of gill cleaning setae, which are equipped with digitate scale setules, is quite conservative. General body grooming, performed by serrate setal brushes on chelipedes and/or posterior pereiopods, is best developed in decapods at a natant grade of body morphology. Brachyuran crabs exhibit less body grooming and virtually no specialized body grooming structures. It is hypothesized that the fouling pressures for body grooming are more severe in natant than in replant decapods. Epizoic fouling, particularly microbial fouling, and sediment fouling have been shown r I m ans of amputation experiments to produce severe effects on olfactory hairs, gills, and i.icubated embryos within short lime periods. Grooming has been strongly suggested as an important factor in the coevolution of a rhizocephalan parasite and its anomuran host. The behavioral organization of grooming is poorly studied; the nature of stimuli promoting grooming is not understood. Grooming characters may contribute to an understanding of certain aspects of decapod phylogeny. The occurrence of specialized antennal grooming brushes in the Stenopodidea, Caridea, and Dendrobranchiata is probably not due to convergence; alternative hypotheses are proposed to explain the distribution of this grooming character. Gill cleaning and general body grooming characters support a thalassinidean origin of the Anomura; the hypothesis of brachyuran monophyly is supported by the conservative and unique gill-cleaning method of the group. -

GRIFFIN, Zoology Department, University of Tasmania [Received by the Editor, 20 April 1965.] Abstract A new species of Paromola is described and illustrated from a single adult male specimen taken in 50 fms. near Three Kings Islands. A key to the genus Paromola is provided. The new species is perhaps most closely related to the western Indian Ocean P. profundarum Alcock and Anderson. The affinities of one of the other two New Zealand thelxiopids, Latreillopsis petterdi Grant, are discussed. INTRODUCTION IN January 1963 a small expedition from the University of Auckland Departments of Zoology and Botany, led by Mr Alan Baker, now of Victoria University of Wel- lington Zoology Department, visited the Three Kings Islands, some 36 miles north- west of Gape Maria Van Diemen. The purpose of the expedition was to investigate the flora and fauna of these islands and although most of the effort in the marine sphere was devoted to the intertidal zone, a few offshore stations were worked. One of these yielded a rather large crab which was forwarded to me by Mr Baker and Professor L. R. Richardson. The specimen proved to be a male of a new species belonging to the Family Thelxiopidae (= Homolidae). Up to the present time this family has been known to be represented in New Zealand by Latreillopsis petterdi Grant and Latreillia australiensis Henderson, species originally described from south-east Australia. -

Abstract The complete list of Canarian marine decapods (last update by González & Quiles 2003, popular book) currently com- prises 374 species/subspecies, grouped in 198 genera and 82 families; whereas the Cape Verdean marine decapods (now fully listed for the first time) are represented by 343 species/subspecies with 201 genera and 80 families. Due to changing environmental conditions, in the last decades many subtropical/tropical taxa have reached the coasts of the Canary Islands. Comparing the carcinofaunal composition and their biogeographic components between the Canary and Cape Verde ar- chipelagos would aid in: validating the appropriateness in separating both archipelagos into different ecoregions (Spalding et al. 2007), and understanding faunal movements between areas of benthic habitat. The consistency of both ecoregions is here compared and validated by assembling their decapod crustacean checklists, analysing their taxa composition, gath- ering their bathymetric data, and comparing their biogeographic patterns. Four main evidences (i.e. different taxa; diver- gent taxa composition; different composition of biogeographic patterns; different endemicity rates) support that separation, especially in coastal benthic decapods; and these parametres combined would be used as a valuable tool at comparing biotas from oceanic archipelagos. -

As the origin of flood events is usually associated with intense precipitation episodes, this study considers the general rainfall characteristics of tourist resorts in two islands of the Canary Archipelago (Spain). Days of intense rainfall were determined using the 99th percentile (99p) of 8 daily precipitation data series. In addition, the weather types that generated these episodes were identified, the best-fitting distribution functions were determined to allow calculation of probable maximum daily precipitation for different return periods, and the territorial and economic consequences of flood events were analysed. The results show highly irregular rainfall, with 99p values ranging 50–80 mm. The weather types associated with 49 days of flooding events were predominantly cyclonic and hybrid cyclonic. The Log Pearson III distribution function best fitted the data series, with a strong likelihood in a 100-year return period of rainfall exceeding 100 mm in a 24 h period. -

The keys cover 127 taxa, most of them identi¢ed to genus and species level. These keys were mainly constructed upon external morphological characters, which are easy to observe under a stereo- microscope. We studied its inter-habi- tat diet variation on the largest of the Canaries, Tenerife, during the 2014–2015 breeding seasons. We also compared the current food spectrum (2014–2015) with that reported in a study conducted 30 years ago. Prey remains analyses were conducted at the three main forested habitats, two native (laurel forest and Canarian pinewood) and one exotic (exotic tree plantations). Birds formed the main dietary component of the Sparrowhawk (26 spe- cies identified), but mammals and reptiles were also consumed in small numbers. Avian prey of around 200–300 g were preferred by Sparrowhawks. Three species accounted for 63.4% of the total number of prey counted (Atlantic Canary Serinus canarius,RockPi- geon Columba livia and Blackbird Turdus merula), but their importance varied among habitats.
