A very big thank you to everybody who has a Children’s Society box. This year at Holy Ascension we have raised £2,121.33p for the work of the Society. Right now in Britain there are children and young people who feel scared, unloved and unable to cope. The Children’s Society works with these young people, step by step, for as long as it takes. Last year almost 120,000 Box Holders came together to help thousands of children in this country. Thanks to you £1.6 million was raised. The money you’ve raised has helped the project workers be there to give vulnerable children the one-to-one support they so urgently need. Thank you for your fantastic support. If you do not already have a collection box for The Children’s Society and would like to have one, please contact me Margaret Brizell on telephone number 381404.

Pension scams. This really makes us angry, you save your whole life and some low life scum-bag convinces you to give your money away. Sounds like fantasy but the FCA estimates up to 40% of pension transfers are linked to either fraud or un-regulated and unsuitable solutions! I have at least 4 clients who have been ripped off in the past!! At least 2 were by people they considered friends or ex-colleagues! Research from Retirement Advantage shows fourteen percent (14%) of non-retired people aged 50 or over have been approached by potential pension scammers in the past 3 months!! The Government has recently announced a ban on pension related cold-calling with legislation to be proposed by the Pensions Secretary (Esther McVey) by the end of June 2018. Great news I hear you say – that will surely show those pesky scammers! Our view…. Sadly, we don’t think so! Scamming some-one out of their life savings is already illegal (also known as theft!), therefore threatening these scum-bags with further penalties such as fines if they cold-call their would-be victims will be like “water off a duck’s back!” The only people who will take heed of the new legislation is legitimate companies such as ours (who would never cold-call you anyway!). How to spot a scam! Here’s some simple ways to help spot a scam: 1. With the clampdown on marketing and cold-calling, chances are anyone phoning you that you are not expecting is a shark – put the phone down! This goes for unsolicited texts also! 2. Where they explain you can take money out before the age of 55. 3. Offering exotic investments including overseas property, hotels or golf courses. 4. Where they use words like “liberation”, “loophole”, “overseas”, “ethical”, “new industry” or “loan”. 5. Where paperwork is couriered to you and time pressure is applied. If in doubt – DO NOT DO IT!
