Dan AUM Director of Washington, D.C. Office The National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) United States of America

Mr. Aum leads NBR’s engagement with the U.S. Congress and the media. He works closely with NBR’s research group leaders and NBR’s executive team to develop and implement nonpartisan outreach strategies that integrate congressional needs and perspectives.

Mr. Aum comes to NBR from Capitol Hill, where he managed a portfolio of thematic and regional issues related to foreign policy, international law, and human rights. He has previously worked on a strategic litigation team that brought cases before international and regional bodies, and led policy initiatives that involved regular engagement with government bodies and the media. He holds a JD from the George Washington University Law School and a BA in Philosophy from Baylor University.

Joe BARNES Bonner Means Baker Fellow Baker Institute for Public Policy United States of America

Joe Barnes is the Bonner Means Baker Fellow at the Baker Institute. Since coming to Rice University in 1995, he has written extensively on international economics, with a focus on the geopolitics of energy. In addition to numerous institute studies, Barnes’ work has also appeared in The New York Times, the Houston Chronicle, Survival, Oil and Gas Journal, Energy Markets, the Newsletter of the Royal United Services Institute, the SAIS Policy Forum Series and the National Interest. He is a contributor to three volumes: “Energy in the Caspian Region” (Palgrave Press), “United States Tax Reform in the 21st Century” (Cambridge University Press) and “Natural Gas and Geopolitics from 1970 to 2040” (Cambridge University Press).

Barnes is also faculty advisor to the Baker Institute Student Forum. From 1979 to 1993, he was a career diplomat with the U.S. State Department, serving in Europe, Africa, the Middle East and South Asia. His last assignment in the State Department was with the Policy Planning Staff. Barnes is a graduate of Princeton University.

Agustín BARRIOS GÓMEZ ​ Co-founder COMEXI Mexico

Agustín Barrios Gómez is an opinion leader, television personality, and businessman who is General Partner at International Capital Partners (ICP), an international investment firm, anchors ADN40 Television News (Saturdays), and is President of the Mexico Image Foundation (FIM). He was a federal Congressman during the LXII Legislature of the Mexican Congress (2012-2015). He grew up as the son of an Ambassador, raised in Canada, Switzerland, the US, as well as his native Mexico.

Barrios Gómez is a frequent speaker on Mexico, lecturing at most of the key institutions that have to do with international affairs in Mexico, the US, and Canada, including the Woodrow Wilson Center, the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), Canada 2020, among many others. He is President of the Fundación Imagen de México (Mexico Image Foundation), dedicated to creating and promoting a narrative for Mexico and the US-Mexico relationship. Among other works, the Foundation created the most-shared video on the bilateral relationship as part of TheTruthAboutUs.org initiative.

Jennifer BERLIN Vice President and Chief of Staff Brookings Institution United States of America

Ms. Berlin previously served as associate director for Security and Strategy within the Brookings Foreign Policy Program. Prior to joining Brookings, she served the U.S. Government as a senior advisor in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, acting director of Public Affairs for the U.S. Department

of Commerce, press secretary for the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, and deputy press secretary in the Office of U.S. Senator Jack Reed. Berlin also worked in the Public Sector Practice of McKinsey & Company, in the Meetings Program of the Council on Foreign Relations, and with Condé Nast Media Group.

Originally from the DC Metro Area, she received her Bachelor of Arts from Georgetown University and her Master of Arts in Strategic Studies from the Johns Hopkins University Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies.

Winfield BOERCKEL Vice President of External Affairs RAND Corporation United States of America

Win Boerckel is vice president for external affairs at the RAND Corporation where he works to raise RAND's profile and extend RAND's public policy impact by overseeing and leveraging the talented teams in congressional relations, media relations, strategic communications, brand identity, digital and social media, video, publishing, and community relations. Boerckel, a winner of the President's Choice Award (RAND's highest honor) who previously served as RAND's director of congressional relations, came to RAND after nearly two decades of policy work on Capitol Hill as a staffer in both the House and the Senate, including Chief of Staff. In 2003, Boerckel was awarded a fellowship by the Stennis Center for Public Service for senior congressional staff members who have an interest in bipartisan and bicameral cooperation. He was named a Thomas B. Watson Fellow for research in South Africa in 1990-91. He is a graduate of Kenyon College, cum laude, with a B.A. in English.

Khristine BROOKES Vice President, Communication Cato Institute United States of America

Khristine Brookes is the Vice President for Communications at the Cato Institute. In that role, she oversees strategy development and operations in media relations, marketing, government relations, and outreach to other external audiences. Before joining Cato in 2008, she spent 10 years in the communications shop at the Heritage Foundation, focusing on promoting Heritage analysts to the broadcast media. From 1994 – 1999, Brookes served as a press secretary on Capitol Hill in several congressional offices. She worked for U.S. Rep. Mark Sanford from South Carolina during his final term before being elected Governor, and ran media relations for U.S. Rep. Helen th Chenoweth of Idaho during the historic 104 ​ Congress. ​

She also worked at the Legislative Studies Institute, a project started by U.S. Sen. Robert Kasten of Wisconsin to train incoming congressional staff. From 1991 to 1993, Brookes worked as a public affairs assistant at the National Oceanic and

Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under President George H.W. Bush. She moved to Washington in 1990 after earning a Bachelor of Science degree journalism from the University of Idaho, but still considers herself an Idahoan.

Josh Burek is an Adjunct Lecturer in Public Policy and the Director of Global Communications and Strategy for Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, the world’s No. 1-ranked university think tank. A member of the Center’s senior management team, Burek is responsible for setting and leading the Center’s publishing and editorial operations, digital platforms, multimedia, marketing, branding, and outreach to donors, government, and media.

Before coming to the Belfer Center, Burek was the Executive Director for Marketing and Communications at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, where he engineered a major website merger and redesign, and a substantial increase in multimedia policy impact. Burek has a B.A. in political science and economics from Principia College and an M.T.S. from Harvard Divinity School.

Celso CASTRO Dean Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV) Brazil

Celso Castro was born on 1/8/1963 in Rio de Janeiro. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Social Sciences from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1986), Master (1989) and Doctor (1995) in Social Anthropology from the National Museum / UFRJ. Since 1986, he has been a researcher at the Center for Research and Documentation of Contemporary History in Brazil (CPDOC), currently the School of Social Sciences of the Getulio Vargas Foundation. Since March 2005 he has been a full professor.

He works in the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching at FGV and directs the collection New Library of Social Sciences of Zahar. Has experience in the areas of Anthropology and History of Brazil, working mainly in the study of the military in Brazil.

Alejandro CHAFUEN Managing Director Acton Institute United States of America Alejandro A. Chafuen was president and CEO of Atlas Network from 1991-2018 and is president and founder of the Hispanic American Center of Economic Research. A graduate of Grove City College and the Argentine Catholic University, Buenos Aires, he also holds a Ph.D. in economics from International College, California. He is a frequent commentator on economics, security, and strategic threats in Latin America, as well as on the relationship between economics and ethics. As well as publishing articles in newspapers ranging from the Wall St Journal to La Nacion, he is also the author of Faith and Liberty, which has been published in several languages and in different editions in Spain, and Italy. He is one of the world's leading commentators on the economic thought of Thomistic and Late-Scholastic thinkers. Jose Luis CHICOMA Executive Director Ethos Public Policy Lab Mexico

Jose Luis Chicoma is the Executive Director of the Ethos Public Policy Laboratory. In the last 6 years, he has spearheaded a wide range of projects, from research and public policy proposals, to hackathons and narratives through comics, in order to promote sustainable development, innovation and new instruments of public-private collaboration, as well as to combat corruption. He has been a consultant for the Inter-American Development Bank, a professor at the most prestigious Peruvian universities,

and a columnist and contributor to several magazines, such as Letras Libres, PODER and América Economía. Jose received a BA in Economics from Universidad del Pacífico and Master in Public Policy from Harvard University. In 2017 he was chosen as one of the sixteen global emerging leaders of the Yale World Fellows Greenberg.

Bill CLIFFORD President and CEO World Affairs Council of America United States of America

Bill Clifford is President and CEO of the World Affairs Councils of America in Washington, DC, where he leads WACA's national office and represents its nonpartisan nonprofit network of more than 90 World Affairs Councils across the United States. In March 2017, he was appointed nonresident senior fellow at the Foreign Policy Institute of the Johns Hopkins University's Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).

Before joining WACA in September 2013, Bill spearheaded the revitalization and growth of WorldBoston, a WACA member Council known for innovative programming, access to leaders, and a tradition of advancing public learning about critical international issues. Bill holds an M.A. from Johns Hopkins SAIS, a B.A. summa cum laude in international relations and French literature from Tufts University, and a C.E.P from Sciences Po in Paris.

Jérémie COHEN-SETTON Research Fellow Peterson Institute for International Economics United States of America

Jérémie Cohen-Setton, Research Fellow, joined the Peterson Institute for International Economics in September 2016 after completing his PhD in economics at the University of California, Berkeley. His research focuses on monetary and fiscal policy, structural reforms, currency unions, financial globalization, and economic history. A chapter of his dissertation, Supply-Side ​ Policies in the Depression: Evidence from France, coauthored ​

with Joshua K. Hausman and Johannes F. Wieland, is available as an NBER Working Paper. A report, coauthored with Jean Pisani-Ferry, documenting the pre-crisis interdependencies of European and East Asian economies is available as a European Commission Economic Paper. Cohen-Setton worked previously as an economist at Bruegel, the UK Treasury, and Goldman Sachs Global Investment Research.

Harin has previously worked as a senior consultant at Booz Allen Hamilton and as the Economic Policy Advisor to the Secretary of Labor at the U.S. Department of Labor.

He is also the co-founder of The Washington Leadership Program, an internship/leadership initiative targeting at getting more South Asian Americans involved in the political and policy process. Harin received his Bachelor of Arts in Economics at the University of and an M.P.P in Energy Policy, Economics, and Regional Policy.

Jeff CORDEAU VP for Operations and CTO Peterson Institute for International Economics United States of America

Jeff Cordeau, Vice President for Operations and Chief Technical Officer, joined the Institute in 2006. Jeff has over 15 years of experience managing technology and operations. He oversees the Institute’s internal and external communications, finance, facilities, operations, and other functions.

Before coming to the Institute, Jeff worked in highly diverse roles at top lobbying firms including The Podesta Group and the Carmen Group. Jeff left the private sector advocacy to pursue the nonprofit world of think tanks. Since joining PIIE, Jeff has enhanced the communications infrastructure including the implementation of the in-house TV studio, webcasting solution, website redesign and other areas that improve communications.

Mr. Cordeau received his MBA at Johns Hopkins University, Carey Business School, and has a B.S. in Political Science from East Carolina University.

Laura Dawson is Director of the Canada Institute and a Munk Senior Fellow with the Macdonald-Laurier Institute. Named one of Canada’s Top 100 foreign policy influencers by the Hill Times in 2014, Dawson is a speaker, writer, and thought leader on Canada-U.S., NAFTA, TPP, and international trade issues. Previously, she served as senior advisor on economic affairs at the United States Embassy in Ottawa and taught international trade and Canada-U.S. relations at the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs. Dawson continues to serve as Emeritus Advisor at Dawson Strategic, which provides advice to business on cross-border trade, market access and regulatory issues. She is a Fellow at the Canadian Defence & Foreign Affairs Institute and

serves on the board of the Council of the Great Lakes Region. Dawson holds a PhD in political science.

Brian DeMarco is the vice president of Development at American Progress. His background in fundraising includes both international conservation and higher education organizations. At Rare, an international conservation nonprofit, DeMarco raised catalytic support to launch a $100 million global marine initiative. At Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, DeMarco contributed to the college’s successful capital campaign to increase financial aid, construct a state-of-the-art science center, and expand the size of the faculty.

Ivan Eland is Senior Fellow at the Independent Institute and ​ Director of the Independent Institute's Center on Peace & ​ Liberty. Dr. Eland is a graduate of Iowa State University and ​ received an M.B.A. in applied economics and a Ph.D. in Public Policy from George Washington University. He has been Director of Defense Policy Studies at the Cato Institute, and he spent 15 years working for Congress on national security issues, including stints as an investigator for the House Foreign Affairs Committee and Principal Defense Analyst at the Congressional Budget Office. Amy Elsbree is senior director of external affairs at the Urban Institute. Maureen Fitzgerald joined CSBA as Director of External Affairs with over 20 years in the federal and corporate sectors. Previously, Moe was the Senior Director of Corporate Communications & Public Relations at IAP Worldwide Services where she led the development of a cohesive communication strategy encompassing all external communications and public affairs for 110 locations in 27 countries, including marketing, global public & media relations, cyber security communications and brand management.

Moe has a broad based global perspective with extensive international work experience and is a native German speaker. Kara FREDERICK Associate Fellow, Technology and National Security Program Center for a New American Security (CNAS) United States of America

Kara Frederick is the Associate Fellow for the Technology and National Security Program at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS). Prior to joining CNAS, Kara helped create and lead Facebook’s Global Security Counterterrorism Analysis Program. She was also the team lead for Facebook Headquarters’ Regional Intelligence Team in Menlo Park, California. Prior to

Facebook, she served as a Senior Intelligence Analyst for a U.S. Naval Special Warfare Command, and spent six years as a counterterrorism analyst at the Department of Defense. While at the Department of Defense, she deployed three times to Afghanistan in support of special operations forces, served as a briefer to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations/Low Intensity Conflict and as a liaison to the National Security Agency.

She received her M.A. in War Studies from King's College London and her B.A. in Foreign Affairs and History from the University of Virginia, where she played varsity soccer.

Vicente GARCIA Director, Events & Special Initiatives Atlantic Council United States of America

Vicente is the Director of Events and Special Initiatives at the Atlantic Council that specializes in global affairs, diplomacy, and national security. He provides strategic insight and management to promote progressive foreign policy solutions to current US and global challenges. He worked at an established nonprofit consulting firm based on history of independent contracting for organizations in the Washington, DC region for two years. Clients also include various private and government agencies throughout the United States. Georgetown Solutions, LLC specializes in organizational management, program and campaign management, PR, and special event management and productions.

Previously he worked as a program manager for three years for the Al-Mubadarah: Arab Empowerment Initiative. Where he led the organization’s first and most impactful event with the White House; created first of its kind program to link Arab diaspora with development initiatives within MENA countries as well as oversee all program operations.

Jerome GLENN Co-founder and CEO Millennium Project United States of America

Jerome C. Glenn is the co-founder (1996) and CEO of The Millennium Project (on global futures research) and lead-author with Elizabeth Florescu, and The Millennium Project Team of the State of the Future 19.1 report of The Millennium Project and ​ 18 other State of the Future reports for the past twenty years. He ​ ​ was the Washington, DC representative for the United Nations University as executive director of the American Council for the UNU 1988-2007.

Glenn has a BA in philosophy from American University, an MA in Teaching Social Science – Futuristics from Antioch Graduate School of Education (now Antioch University New England), and was a doctoral candidate in general futures research at the University of Massachusetts. He received the Donella Meadows Metal, Kondratieff Metal, Emerald Citation of Excellence, honorary professorship and doctor’s degrees from two universities in South America (Universidad Ricardo Palma and Universidad Franz Tamayo) and is a leading boomerang stunt man.

William HALAL Deputy Director, Global Business and Economics Program GWU and TechCast Global United States of America

William E. Halal is Professor Emeritus of Management, Technology, and Innovation at George Washington University, Washington, D.C. An authority on emerging technology, strategic planning, knowledge, innovation, and institutional change, he has worked with General Motors, AT&T, SAIC, MCI, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, International Data Corporation, the DoD, the Asian Development Bank, foreign companies, and various government agencies. Halal substituted for Peter Drucker in giving a talk to 2000 managers at the Los Angeles Coliseum. Halal is the founder of TechCast, a web-based system that pools ​ ​ the knowledge of experts to forecast breakthroughs in technology, social trends, and wild cards to assist decision makers in planning for a changing world. TechCast was cited by

the National Academies, featured in the Washington Post, Newsweek, the Futurist. and otherwise recognized as one of the best forecasting system available. Halal co-founded the Institute for Knowledge & Innovation as a collaborative effort between the GW School of Business and the School of Engineering. Halal studied engineering, economics, and the social sciences at Purdue and Berkeley. Previously, he was a major in the U.S. Air Force, an aerospace engineer on the Apollo Program, and a Silicon Valley business manager.

Martha HALL FINDLAY President and CEO Canada West Foundation Canada

Martha Hall Findlay is President and CEO of the Canada West Foundation, an independent, non-partisan public policy think tank that focuses on the policies that shape the West, and by extension, Canada. Through evidence-based research and commentary, the Canada West Foundation provides practical solutions to tough public policy challenges at home and on the global stage. As a corporate lawyer, senior business executive and successful entrepreneur, Martha has more than 25 years of domestic and international experience with major multinationals as well as start-ups, primarily in telecommunications and technology.

She was a Member of Parliament from 2008 to 2011, serving in several capacities in the Shadow Cabinet, and as a member of the House of Commons Standing Committees for Finance; Transport, Infrastructure and Communities; Government Operations; and International Trade. She is currently a member of the Minister of International Trade’s Trade Expert Advisory Council. She is also on the Advisory Councils of Energy Futures Lab; Positive Energy (University of Ottawa); and Calgary Sport and Major Events. She is a regular contributor to the Globe and Mail, has written dozens of articles, reports and essays on key policy issues, and is a frequent public speaker and media commentator.

Heidi HARTMANN President and CEO Institute for Women’s Policy Research United States of America

Dr. Hartmann is an expert on women, economics and public policy; she frequently testifies before the U.S. Congress and is often cited as an authority in media outlets including CNN, ABC News, The New York Times, and PBS NewsHour. She is an ​ ​ accomplished author and her work has been translated into more than a dozen languages. She served as Chair of the Board of the American Academy of Political Science, and Treasurer of the National Council of Women’s Organizations.

Prior to founding the Institute for Women’s Policy Research, which is a scientific research organization that focuses on women-centered policy oriented research, Dr. Hartmann was on the faculties of Rutgers University and the New School for Social Research and worked at the National Research Council/National Academy of Sciences and the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. John is a senior financial executive with proven expertise leading the finance function and corporate administration for several companies in the publishing industry with print, digital and direct mail operations and involving manufacturing, production, and distribution processes.

He has experience in providing financial leadership during times of intense revenue/cost pressure, including downsizing and re-engineering. His experiences include P&L responsibility, labor analysis, systems conversions, human resources functions, banking relationships, forecasting processes including financial reporting and legal functions in a variety of publicly traded newspaper companies, a privately-owned multi-channel media company, and most recently a highly regarded non-profit think tank in DC.

Victoria HERRMANN President and Managing Director Arctic Institute United States of America

Dr. Victoria Herrmann is the President and Managing Director of The Arctic Institute. In addition to managing the Institute and Board of Directors, her research and writing focus on climate change, community adaptation, human development, and resource economies. As a National Geographic Explorer, she led the America’s Eroding Edges project in 2016 and 2017. Her current project, Rise Up to Rising Tides, is creating an online matchmaking platform that connects pro bono experts with climate-affected communities with support from the JMK Innovation Prize. In cooperation with the Lowlander Center in Louisiana, Victoria is also leading the creation of a dialogue

framework between climate-displaced coastal-bayou communities and inland-high ground receiving communities. Victoria previously worked as a Mirzayan Science and Technology Policy Fellow at the National Academies of Sciences’ Polar Research Board and as a Junior Fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace’s Energy and Climate Program. She was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to Canada to pursue Arctic research in 2013.

She currently teaches sustainability management at American University; science communication at the University Centre of the Westfjords, Iceland; and public speaking at National Geographic Sciencetelling Bootcamps. Victoria received her PhD in Geography as a Gates Scholar from the Scott Polar Research Institute at Cambridge University in 2018 and holds a Masters degree from the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs at Carleton University.

Daniel M. Rothschild is the Executive Director of the Mercatus Center at George Mason University. He leads strategy and oversees all programs and operations for the organization.

Prior to serving in this role at Mercatus, Mr. Rothschild was director of state projects and a senior fellow with the R Street Institute. He joined R Street in October 2013 after two years as the first-ever director of external affairs and coalitions at the American Enterprise Institute. Alicia OJEDA SANTANA Analyst Fundar

Alicia currently works in the Donor Relations Program in Fundar, Centro de Análisis e Investigación (Fundar, Center for Analysis and Research) in Mexico City. Fundar monitors public policies and public institutions through applied research, critical reflection, experimentation and linkage with civil, social, and governmental actors. Alicia is responsible of sharing with donors Fundar’s work and raising funds for the organization. She has an advanced master’s degree in Cultures and Development Studies from KU Leuven, Belgium, and a major in Communications Sciences from ITESO, Mexico. She has worked in projects related to human rights, sustainability, education and migration in civil society organizations and academic institutions.

Clark SCOTT Chief of Staff Cato Institute United States of America

Clark’s job at the Cato Institute allows him to interact with most areas of the organization. Much of his time is spent supporting strategic initiatives for the president and CEO, and this role offers the opportunity to approach opportunities holistically. A good portion of this time is spent managing major donor relationships.

Additionally, he oversee our human resources department, which is responsible for hiring approximately 125 new employees per year. He oversees the team, craft strategy, address employee issues, evaluate compensation and performance, among other responsibilities.

Most recently, he has began to oversee our publications and several administrative functions. His publications team edits, proofreads, and copyrights most of what Cato produces.

Stefano SCURATTI Principal Consultant Economist Intelligence Unit United States of America

Stefano is a principal in The EIU's Public Policy, Economics and Politics consulting practice in North America. Previously, he managed the practice’s South-east Asia team, supporting our clients in the region out of our Singapore office. He has led a variety of engagements on issues such as peace and security, disaster risk, the economic cost of obesity, public-private partnerships in the infrastructure sector, and the impact of AI and automation on development. Stefano is an expert in the development of macroeconomic and geopolitical scenarios and is a skilled scenario workshop facilitator.

Prior to joining The EIU in London, Stefano worked for Accenture, focusing on global trend analysis, emerging markets, innovation and economic development. He has also worked for

Grameen Bank, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the United Nations. Stefano is a graduate of the University of Trento and holds a Master's degree in international political economy from the London School of Economics. He also studied scenario planning at Oxford University.

Andrew SELEE President Migration Policy Institute United States of America

Andrew Selee has been President of the Migration Policy Institute, a nonpartisan institution that seeks to improve immigration and integration policies through fact-based research, opportunities for learning and dialogue, and the development of new ideas to address complex policy questions, since August 2017. Prior to that, he spent 17 years at the Woodrow Wilson Center, where he founded the Center’s Mexico Institute and later served as Vice President for Programs and Executive Vice President. He has also worked as staff in the U.S. Congress and on development and migration programs in Tijuana, Mexico.

He holds a PhD in policy studies from the University of Maryland, an MA in Latin American studies from the University of California, San Diego, and a BA, Phi Beta Kappa, from Washington University in St. Louis. He was selected as an Andrew Carnegie Fellow for the 2017-18 period.

James SIEBENS Research Associate Stimson Center United States of America

James Siebens is a Research Associate with the Defense Strategy and Planning program, where he is currently working on a book related to US military operations “short of war” since the end of the Cold War. Siebens’ research focuses on grand strategy, foreign military intervention, civil war, and hybrid warfare. He previously served as the Special Assistant to the President and CEO at the Stimson Center. Prior to joining Stimson, Siebens held a contract appointment with the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START) at the

University of Maryland, where he worked as a Data Analyst on a Defense Department project related to Gray Zone conflict.

Leigh SLOANE Managing Director International Institute for Strategic Studies - Americas United States of America

Leigh Morris Sloane is Managing Director of IISS–Americas. In this role, she manages operations and outreach for the Washington office and works closely with her IISS colleagues around the world to ensure that constituents based in the Americas connect with the Institute’s world-leading research and convening power.

Leigh has over 20 years of experience working in the international affairs arena at the nexus of research, higher education and policy making. Prior to joining the IISS, Leigh served as Chief of Staff at the Brookings Institution where she managed the executive secretariat and activities of the president, Strobe Talbott. Previously, Leigh served as the Executive Director of the Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs (APSIA). In this role, she managed programmes and services, and developed new initiatives for APSIA's 70-plus full and affiliate member schools around the world. Additionally, Leigh has managed the Congress and US Foreign Policy Program at the Council on Foreign Relations and helped establish the Middle East Initiative at the Harvard Kennedy School. Her writing has also appeared in The Atlantic, CNN, Forbes, MarketWatch and other publications.

Ana has appeared as a commentator on NBC, MSNBC, CNBC and Canadian networks including CTV and BNN. She is also a regular contributor to American Public Media’s Marketplace. She has a BA in cultural anthropology from Northwestern University and an MA in international relations with a focus in China and international economics from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, D.C. Before moving to Washington, D.C., she lived and worked in China for eight years.

Yuki Tatsumi is Co-Director of the East Asia Program and Director of the Japan Program at the Stimson Center. Before joining Stimson, Tatsumi worked as a research associate at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and as the special assistant for political affairs at the Embassy of Japan in Washington.

In September 2006, Tatsumi testified before the House Committee on International Relations. She is a recipient of the 2009 Yasuhiro Nakasone Incentive Award. In 2012 she was awarded the Letter of Appreciation from the Ministry of National Policy of Japan for her contribution in advancing mutual understanding between the United States and Japan. Previously, he worked for 7 years as Director of the Social Mobility Program at CEEY. From that position he served as general coordinator of the ESRU Survey of Social Mobility in Mexico in its 2011 and 2017 versions, as well as the main author of the Social Mobility Report in Mexico: Imagina tu Futuro ​ (2013). In 2016, he served as principal advisor and co-author of the Human Development Report Mexico 2016: Inequality and Mobility of the United Nations-UNDP Program . In 2017 he was also general coordinator of the Survey of Social Mobility of Young People in the Metropolitan Area of Mexico City 2017 ​​ (EMOVI-Youth 2017).

Sarah WARTELL President Urban Institute United States of America

In 2012, Sarah Rosen Wartell became the third president of the Urban Institute since it was founded in 1968. Urban is an economic and social science research and policy organization whose more than 450 researchers, experts, and other staff believe in the power of evidence to improve lives and strengthen communities. During her tenure, Urban has articulated its strategy to “elevate the debate” by bringing more of its insights from research to federal, state, and local government and practice; becoming a leader in research communications and data visualization; and undertaking an ambitious program of business systems and technology modernization.

Michael WILLS Executive Vice President The National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) United States of America

He manages all aspects of NBR’s financial and business operations, including program and business development and corporate strategic planning, and serves as secretary to the Board of Directors. He also manages NBR’s publications and outreach programs, including the Strategic Asia series and Asia Policy journal. Joy Sun is a Summit Coordinator for the 2019 North American Think Tank Summit. Previously, she interned for a former member of the Department of Education and spent the summer working on higher education consulting and related policy research. She has also worked with two separate startups, one in healthcare technology and one in workforce development. She is graduating this May from the College of Arts and Sciences, double majoring in biochemistry and political science with a concentration in comparative politics. This fall, she will begin working as a business analyst for Capital One in McLean, Virginia. Her interest in East Asian politics and international relations has led to her Chinese minor. She will teach in China this summer and receive a TEFL certificate. After a few years in private industry, she plans to obtain an M.A. in international affairs.

Laura WHELAN Summit Coordinator and Research Assistant Intern Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program United States of America

Laura Whelan is a Research Assistant and Summit Coordinator at the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program. In addition, she currently leads TTCSP’s media relations and digital communications. To date, she has coordinated upwards of five summits across Africa, Latin America, Europe and Asia, and thereafter produced the subsequent reports. She also conducts in-depth research on the capacity, sustainability and quality of African think tanks and is currently pursuing a research project to analyze think tank trends globally. In addition to TTCSP, Laura has worked as a Chatham House Intern in the Communications and Publishing Department, conducting archival research for Chatham House’s upcoming centenary, in addition to assisting in the Press Office. Laura is an undergraduate student at the University of Pennsylvania, majoring in Philosophy, Politics and Economics and minoring in Architecture and Art History. She will graduate a Benjamin Franklin Scholar in May 2020.
