Student’s Feedback

The financial assistance given by DBT under STAR College scheme has enhanced the quality of teaching and learning process. The introduction of new practical’s and increase in the number of chemicals / instruments has supported us in a greater way to carry out the experiments individually.

Industrial visit serves as a relation building process between institute and industry. The opportunity to visit BARC, Encee Aromatics, Wafe Auxillary Chemicals & Subha Plastics, has imparted knowledge on nuclear reactors and its application, polymer processing technology, manufacturing of chemicals and the safety measures to be followed for proper disposal of industrial waste. It has also provided an opportunity to learn practically through interaction, working methods, employment practices.

58

The hands on training on Textile Printing facilitated to learn all aspects of basic screen printing techniques. This taught us to design on a variety of fabrics, easily and affordably.

The training on “Instrumental Methods of Analysis” helped us in understanding and interpretation of the characterization studies of our project.

The training on IoT devices imparted the needed basic knowledge for the design and development of Easy IoT Systems. This hands on practical learning enable us to design the product with visible output.

The training on cheminformatics facilitate us to deal with the manipulation of chemical structures for their structure activity relationship.

Guest lectures, mentors and interface meetings helped us to enrich the advancements of technology in research. Through exposure to research as Group project and paper presentation in various conferences in undergraduate level has helped us to realize our zeal towards research and continue on to postgraduate studies and faculty positions.

Faculty Feedback

Knowledge acquisition programme like conference, workshops on various fields of chemistry and faculty development programmes has enhanced and enabled the faculty to enrich both academic knowledge and hands on experiences on technical aspects.

Research based teaching practices learnt by Dr.D.Nalini has enabled to modify the curriculum and Standard Operating Procedures for practical’s.

FDP on “Application of GIS in Chemistry” opened a new venture for research.

Future Plans

 Motivate the students to pursue higher studies in reputed National Institutions and also encourage them to opt study Abroad Programme  Ensure more placement opportunities in Chemical, analytical and R&D laboratories  Encourage the students to take up society oriented projects and publish it in SCOPUS indexed Journals

59

Impact of DBT support 1. The Star College Scheme has enabled the department to procure new equipments and it has aided in upgrading existing teaching resources which in turn improved the 'hands on' experimental exposure, quality of teaching and learning of the students. Helped to increase capabilities of core instrumentation resources by procuring new equipment and upgrading of existing facilities 2. The Scheme has enabled the departments to enrich the departmental library with additional reference books and science related journals to which students and teachers have gained quick and easy access. 3. DBT support has made it possible to organize exposure trips to relevant research laboratories and scientific institutes. The industrial visits have widened the scope of learning among the students and evoked in them an interest to explore the practical aspects of theoretical knowledge gained in classroom. 4. The undergraduate students were able to take up small in-house projects which helped them to gain an insight into research methodology.

ONE DAY POPULAR LECTURE - POPULARIZATION OF SCIENCES Date : 01.02.2020 Venue: Sports Arena, PSGR Krishnammal College for Women, Coimbatore REPORT Popularization of Sciences, DBT-CTEP: To popularize Biotechnology activities in India, Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India provided financial assistance (Rs. 2,00,000/-) towards organizing popular lecture on the topic “Popularisation of science” was organised on 1st February, 2020, to create awareness among the masses and popularize biotechnology and allied areas among the students. More than 1600 students from eleven schools and 14 colleges located in the districts of Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode, Nammakal, Udumalpet and Salem actively participated in the programme.

The programme started at 09.30 and Dr. N. Yesodha Devi, Secretary, PSGR Krishnammal College for Women welcomed the gathering followed by the lecture on the topic Microbiology in Human Welfare by Dr. R. Rajendran, Associate Professor, Department of Microbiology, PSG College of Arts and Science, Coimbatore. He addressed on the crucial role of microbes in our day to day life as they are an important source of food and other products. He emphasised on the bioactive components that can provide positive health effects, some can be manipulated to be beneficial, some others help to clean our environment and whereas some others leads to the outbreak of diseases also.

After the tea break Prof.S. Manian, Former Vice – Chancellor, Annamalai University, Chidambaram addressed the gathering on the topic Development of a pesticide for the management of foliar disease in Tea. His speech mainly focused on harmful effects of chemical fungicides and advantages of biological control of diseases which are eco-friendly to provide long term protection to crops and also to improve plant growth and yield.

Dr. Arun Kumar Rawat, Advisor, Department of Biotechnology, New Delhi spoke on the on the topic Activities of DBT. In what way DBT is responsible for several research and development projects, demonstrations, grants and creation of infrastructural facilities to make significant achievements in the growth and application of biotechnology in the broad areas of agriculture, health care, animal sciences, environment, and industry.

These Popular Lectures in the field of science by experts created awareness among the school and college students to know about the basic concepts, recent advances & potential of modern Biology & Biotechnology. The programme also helped the college students from the

104 disciplines of basic and applied sciences to know about the avenues, scholarships, financial assistance and courses in various institutions to pursue their higher studies. General public and parents also participated in the programme and were benefited. This programme also helped us in developing network among colleges in DBT STAR College Scheme.
