We are excited to welcome the summer in with lots of fantastic local talent, as The Electric Theatre plays host to the Auditions and Finals for the first ever Has Guildford Got Talent? If you have a talent you’d like to share, or you want to cheer on friends and family who get involved, see page 4 for details. Our dance programme offers some of Spain´s finest award winning artists in a mesmerising tour de force when Jaleo Flamenco (p7) perform with their new stage show A Compás. For theatre lovers we have a spectacular dramatisation of the life of Oscar Wilde performed by Olivier Award nominated actor Gerard Logan in Wilde About The Boy (p10). Our summer events and festivals include The Electric Film Festival in July with award winning films including Mr Turner and Whiplash (p15), and the Guildford Summer Youth Project invites young people to make a show in a week (p16). GATA is an umbrella organisation of about 20 societies and groups including theatre and opera companies, singing and youth groups, dancers and film makers. This summer, The Electric Theatre is working with the Artventure Trust to install a striking community and arts themed mural onto a thirty two metre wall in the heart of Guildford. Artventure Trust, a registered charity, provides workshops in painting, drawing, modelling, textiles and ceramics to adults and children with learning difficulties, giving them imaginative outlets for self expression. ABOUT THE PROJECT 100% driven by the participants’ artwork, this collaboration is the result of many months hard work to design, paint and install a mural which illustrates community life in a unique setting. Each panel will contain vignettes exploring the artists’ interpretations of their lives in Guildford, its culture and the local environment. The wall outside the Theatre, onto which it will be fixed, bounds an open space used by passersby and visitors to The Theatre. This is a community project driven by Artventure clients and their carers, local schools, Artventure staff and volunteers working alongside a range of local artists. This June, come and visit The Electric Theatre to explore the mural and get involved in activities for all ages and abilities which celebrate the launch of this new public art installation. Speaking on behalf of the Artventure Trust, Chris Dubois explains: “Bright and vibrant, the mural will enhance this part of Guildford for years to come creating a lasting legacy of this important partnership. This mural will also showcase the abilities and achievements vulnerable people can make when they have a platform to express themselves.” The work has been made possible by generous grants from Guildford Borough Council, Arts Council England and from a number of local companies and individuals. With thanks to: Gosden House School, Pond Meadow Academy Trust, St. Joseph’s Specialist School, St Peter’s Catholic School and Philip Southcote School, as well as all participants, artists and supporters.     Existential Songs Full results Supplementary material for Mick Cooper’s Existential psychotherapy and counselling: Contributions to a pluralistic practice (Sage, 2015), Appendix. One of the great strengths of existential philosophy is that it stretches far beyond psychotherapy and counselling; into art, literature and many other forms of popular culture. This means that there are many – including films, novels and songs that convey the key messages of existentialism. These may be useful for trainees of existential therapy, and also as recommendations for clients to deepen an understanding of this way of seeing the world. In order to identify the most helpful resources, an online survey was conducted in the summer of 2014 to identify the key existential films, books and novels. Invites were sent out via email to existential training institutes and societies, and through social media. Participants were invited to nominate up to three of each art media that ‘most strongly communicate the core messages of existentialism’. In total, 119 people took part in the survey (i.e., gave one or more response). Approximately half were female (n = 57) and half were male (n = 56), with one of other gender. The average age was 47 years old (range 26–89). The participants were primarily distributed across the UK (n = 37), continental Europe (n = 34), North America (n = 24), Australia (n = 15) and Asia (n = 6). Around 90% of the respondents were either qualified therapists (n = 78) or in training (n = 26). Of these, around two-thirds (n = 69) considered themselves existential therapists, and one third (n = 32) did not. There were 235 nominations for the key existential song, with enormous variation across the different respondents.

The Sun said, “This awesome pairing results in glorious and slightly unhinged psychedelic pop rock”. Mojo hailed, “A classic British rock album heavy on power pop smarts” whilst Classic Rock stated, “Flawless and exhilarating, this demands to be the soundtrack to all of our waking summer dreams”. Formed by singer-songwriters and multi-instrumentalists Willie Dowling (ex Honeycrack/Jackdaw4) and Jon Poole (ex Cardiacs), The Dowling Poole have created something truly special. Jon Poole says, “‘A Kiss On The Ocean’ was an audience favourite on our recent tour, although the jaunty pop disguises a slightly unsettling side, since it's really a song by a narcissist, singing while staring at his own reflection. When we first started recording ‘Bleak Strategies’, I would write Willie little messages every day in red lipstick on the bathroom mirror just to unnerve him a little. I think that's where this song started although it took us a while to get the right measure of light and shade.” Willie adds, “Of course it was Whitney Houston who invented self- love when she sang her impudent, preposterous and self-indulgent nonsense, ‘The Greatest Love of All’. I'm still not entirely sure what she meant but I like to think that we went one better with this one.” The single is accompanied with three tracks not on the album; ‘The Straw Man’ is a wry comment on the frenzy of confusion and doubt created by the Jimmy Saville debacle, and there is also a live acoustic version of ‘Hey Stranger’, a song written as a celebration of the life of Tim Smith, Jon's friend and former band partner in Cardiacs, who has been seriously ill for a number of years.

While Guapo started out in the mid 90s as a heavy, London-based duo (Dave Smith - drums; Matt Thompson - bass) playing post- hardcore noise-rock in the style of the Jesus Lizard and Shellac, it has expanded significantly (in more ways than one) since.     May 18, 2014 21:29 BST The Dowling Poole release their long awaited album "Bleak Strategies", announces CloseUp PR. The Dowling Poole is a new band formed by singer-songwriters and multi- instrumentalists Willie Dowling (ex Honeycrack/Jackdaw4) and Jon Poole (ex Cardiacs). Dowling and Poole first met in 2011 when recording and producing Ginger Wildheart’s award winning, top-ten "555%" album, and it was mutual admiration at first sight. "I was immediately taken by Jon's remarkable and diverse musical talent", says Dowling, "but it took me an age to pluck up the courage to phone him and ask whether he'd like to do something together." Fortunately, Poole had been thinking along the same lines and was equally thrilled at the prospect of working with Dowling. They started writing songs and locked themselves away in Dowling's recording studio in France for a few months, writing and recording an album they have titled "Bleak Strategies". Influenced by pop masters such as XTC, Blur, 10CC, The Kinks, The Beatles and more, The Dowling Poole debut album "Bleak Strategies" is an eclectic and contemporary sounding mix of semi-psychedelic pop, somehow quintessentially British-sounding, laced with harmonies and a multitude of influences from the best of 50 years of rock and popular music. "It was a very collaborative process", says Poole, "We both brought songs to the table and we performed, sang and produced them together. You'd be hard pressed to guess who wrote what since we both were adding ideas left right and centre to each others work".
