Head Students & Senior Prefects Hi, my name is Alex Thornton and I have recently been appointed as a Head Student here at Lostock Hall Academy. First let me tell you a little bit about myself. I am a very enthusiastic, proactive person that likes to take part in sporting activities and I am also a keen scientist. My hobbies include motocross racing and jujitsu.

The application process for becoming a Senior Prefect started halfway through 2018, when the application for being a Prefect was launched. For this application process, we had to write a formal letter to Principal another letter of application was required. Principal Gorman about our past achievements and qualities. Gorman, Miss Flynn read the letters and formed a After this, the newly appointed 55 Prefects got put to consensus. Staff were consulted to help sort the 33 work immediately around school. After an intensive interview these 12 candidates were narrowed down to the 4 Senior Prefects and 2 Head Students. Together we will be working to bring the students of Lostock Hall Academy closer together to work as a team, to be the best they can be.

I am Holly Cook and I am thrilled to have been chosen as Head Student for the 2018/2019 school year. As a keen actress I am involved with productions in and out of school and I am also very involved in the music department. I am excited to begin to implement student ideas for the academy.

I would also like to introduce our four Senior Prefects who will be working alongside us:

Megan Wilson who is a committed and talented dancer Harry Hodgson, a drummer for a local well-known band PR5, Oliver Grimes, an anti-bullying ambassador for the school Joel Hodgson a knowledgeable Geographer.

We all intend to work together to help make school an even better place than it already is.

Wellbeing Champions It has been a very successful term for LHA’s Wellbeing Champions. These students are from Year 9 and have been trained by the charity Lancashire Mind to deliver sessions to students in school and in local primary schools on mental health and resilience. They have also been shown how to council and help students on various issues to do with mental health. Thanks to their outstanding work, the Wellbeing Champions have won two prestigious awards recently.

Firstly, they were awarded a highly commended award at the recent LEP school awards in the Wellbeing & Resilience category. Secondly, they won the UCLAN Award for Wellbeing Challenge at the recent Lancashire Mind award ceremony. Both awards are testament to the hard work and maturity of these students. Join us on our Open Evening Wednesday 19th September 6.00pm-8.00pm We Rocked!! On 4th, 5th and 6th June around 80 students were involved in our whole school production of ‘We Will Rock You!’. From performing on stage, in the band, operating lighting and sound, working backstage, changing scenery, applying makeup and a whole host of other jobs students from across all year groups pulled together to create an amazing three nights of performances.

The cast and musicians were ‘...the Champions’ as they worked so hard to pull off some very hard Queen numbers! A fantastic time was had by all - well done on an amazing performance.

We Will Rock You! - A Students Perspective It gives me great pleasure to declare the astounding performance ‘We Will Rock You’ as a huge success. After reviewing one of the later rehearsals, I immediately knew that ‘We Will Rock You’ would be one of the best performances I have ever seen… and it certainly was!

The performance is a jukebox musical exploring the contrast in a broken society. It illustrates how a group of rebels called the Bohemians fight for freedom of thought and fashion against a devious organisation called Globalsoft (led by the infamous Killer Queen).

When I think about a positive growth mind set and setting the bar high, the perfect anecdote that comes to mind is the words ‘We Will Rock You’. This is because it is one of the largest school productions at Lostock Hall Academy that has taken a huge amount of collaboration and teamwork effort. The performance has taken 10 months of rehearsals and I am thrilled to say that the hard work has paid off!

But of course, it wouldn’t be the huge success it was if not for the helpful input of the school’s brass band and very own PR5 playing the 32 Queen songs. It was as if the group were there themselves. The young actors and actresses in the performance didn’t portray their roles in a good way; they excelled them in an outstanding way! A huge thanks goes to all of you involved, especially the lighting crew who aided the success of the three evenings.

Since the performance was such an achievement, I have provided a quote list (available in full version on the school website) of personal thoughts and feelings about the performances from the cast and crew involved. ‘We Will Rock You’ was, in the word of Mrs. Hardacre, “a fantastic performance where the lovely and enthusiastic cast did themselves proud.”

It really was a truly magnificent performance that gripped the audiences’ attention to the highest standard.

Let’s hope that the dedicated students and staff involved in the production give themselves a huge pat on the back for overachieving. Well done to you all! You deserve it. SHOUT OUT to Phoebe Doherty! I am delighted to inform you that Phoebe Doherty of Year 9 has attended her first cheer competition in Barcelona and the team came 3rd place in the competition!! Such an achievement for the group on their 1st ever outing as the City of Cyclones!!

As one of our most talented Gymnasts Phoebe also attended the Malta GymStars International Women’s Artistic Competition in Malta. Over 330 gymnasts from 30 different clubs and 13 different nations were competing this year.

Phoebe competed ‘Round D’ in the competition and although didn’t medal, certainly proved that she has the skills to deserve her place in the team at this friendly International Competition.

Overall, City of Preston won Round D and brought home the trophy – which is absolutely fantastic news for the club, considering how many gymnasts were taking part!!

Whilst in Malta, Phoebe also received the exciting news from her club that she has been selected for a competition taking place in Costa Rica in May. We wish her good luck and look forward to hearing all about it!

Well done Phoebe Lostock Carnival Capers!

Students from LHA took part in the recent Lostock Hall Carnival representing the school in this local community event. Singing and dancing various songs from the recent show ‘We Will Rock You’, around 30 students and staff entertained large crowds in Lostock Hall as well as giving out balloons and leaflets. Mrs Hardacre choreographed the dance moves and Mr Doyle provided the music to accompany the students.

2018 South Ribble Sports Awards – The ‘Hat Trick’

The annual South Ribble Sports Awards enabled the local sporting community to once again gather together to celebrate the talent and dedication that is so evident within the district. This is the 13th year that the awards ceremony has run in order to recognize devoted sports personnel of all ages and ability levels in South Ribble.

Lostock Hall Academy won the ‘School of the year for PE and Sport’ for the third consecutive year, which is an amazing achievement by any standard. The school was awarded the prize for our continued dedication to developing young leaders, who in turn do so much to develop sport within the local and wider community. Over the course of this year students have been given the opportunity to work with experienced coaches to complete leadership and referee courses. This in turn has given them the skills to lead their own sessions with younger students and officiate with confidence at the many competitions organized at the Academy.

Our students continue to dedicate countless hours of their time towards organising and running events across a range of sports. The football, netball and tag rugby central venue events give hundreds of KS2 students the opportunity to get involved and play sport. They lead by example and are role models to other students within Lostock Hall Academy, often helping others develop confidence and communication skills. The PE Department would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our young leaders who have enabled the school to achieve the ‘hat trick’ of awards – well done to you all – everyone at the school is very proud of you.

Preston Youth Theatre Find us on Congratulations to Chris Murray, Jess Perry, Rhys Bibby and Amiee Bellis who have all been accepted onto a summer school at Preston Youth Theatre. This will lead to a performance at Lancashire Encounter Festival being held in September. Well done! @lostockacademy Lucy Moores Trampoline Elite Pathway Year 9 student Lucy Moores continues to be a rising star in the British trampoline world. After becoming British Champion at NDP level 7, Lucy moved onto the ‘Elite Pathway’, which is the highest level in UK Trampoline. After four rounds, Lucy has qualified for both the English and British Elite finals and is hoping to do well enough to be selected to join the British trampoline squad. Her dedication and commitment to training is outstanding and gives her every chance to reach the very top of her sport.

Year 7 Local Area Fieldwork

The day of our fieldwork was thankfully rather cloudy and cooler than it has been. So, laden with waterproofs and sun cream and prepared for the British weather we set off.

We walked to the Old Tram Road and found out about how and why it was built, walking through Walton Park and looking at the style of the housing and comparing it to those on Todd Lane North. We had a break at Park and then meandered back along the old railway line, making a detour to Vernon’s Mill and Lodge. Here the students found out about the conditions in the Mill for the orphan apprentices who worked there and how it made bandages which would have been used on soldiers injured in WW1 and WW2. We also looked at what the Mill is like now and what we think should happen to it. We returned to the old railway line, past the old gasworks site where we found out why it is being used for new housing, before returning to school with tired legs and ready for our lunch.

Governor Spotlight My name is Annette Ashworth and I am Vice Chair of governors at Lostock Hall Academy. I started on the Governing Board as a Parent Governor when my son was in Year 9, and when my term of office ended I moved to become a community governor. I have taken a number of roles in the academy over the 4 years that I have been a governor, from sitting on the finance committee and joining interview panels, supporting at marketing events to painting the library corridor walls! I try to be as involved in academy life as possible and particularly enjoy the events such as the musical events and open evenings when I am able to interact with the students and discuss their experiences of Academy life.

In my day job, I am the Head of Computing and Business at another local academy and have been a teacher for almost 20 years now, and a Head of Department for over 10. This gives me a lot of experience in school life and an understanding of how schools work from the grass roots, which allows me to bring an insight from both a teachers, students and a leader’s perspective. Being a governor also compliments my own practice and I bring many great ideas back to my own school as a result of my work at Lostock Hall.

I feel being a governor is a thoroughly fulfilling role and I hope to be part of Lostock Hall Academy for many years to come. Annette Ashworth Proud Primary Partnerships

Thank you to Mr Foster for all the hard work and planning that went into the Poland trip. Sports Day 2018 The annual Lostock Hall Academy Sports Day, held on Tuesday 03rd July, once again proved to be an exciting event. The majority of students from Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 took part in the track heats and field events over the course of Periods 1-4. All students and staff then came out to the field during Period 5 to either compete in or watch the track finals and relays.

Both the weather and atmosphere throughout the day were superb and the afternoon witnessed some excellent performance and very close run races. Special congratulations to Harry Everett (Year 10) and Toby Holmes (Year 9) who broke long-standing school 800m and 100m records for their respective year groups.

Sports Day is a whole school event with all teaching and support staff giving up a lot of time to ensure that it is run successfully. The fact that students and staff put so much into the event makes all the hard work that goes into organising it even more worthwhile. With such dedication and effort from all of our young athletes it is an event that everyone looks forward to each year – roll on 2019!

Winning Form groups on the day were: Year 7: T, Year 8: S, Year 9: L, Year 10: T @lostockacademy

Historical London Trip for Year 7 & 8

Students from Year 7 and 8 enjoyed their visit to London. They had the opportunity to visit some of London’s greatest historical sites, such as the Tower of London and Whitechapel, home to the infamous Jack the Ripper. Students also enjoyed tea at Planet Hollywood. The behaviour and attitude of our students was excellent throughout. It was a fantastic trip.

Geography Trip to Langden Brook

We’re fieldwork busy here in Geography this term. Year 10 went out to Langden Brook on 27th June to collect their data for their GCSE exam next year. It was a gloriously sunny day and the students were all engaged and excited to be out in the countryside. They demonstrated some excellent techniques whilst collecting the data and no-one fell over in the river - always a bonus!

Eleanor’s Cricketing Success

Eleanor Boardman in Year 8 continues to progress through the ranks within Lancashire cricket. She currently plays for Penwortham, Leyland Ladies, South Ribble District U13 and Lancashire U13. She is captain of her club team, Penwortham and has also been given the privilege of captaining the Lancashire representative side on two separate opportunities this season. She often opens the batting and has scored runs consistently for both club and county (including her highest score against Nottinghamshire). She is enjoying her best season to date with the bat and we all hope that this continues. Well done Eleanor!
