KLANGSPUREN SCHWAZ INTERNATIONAL ENSEMBLE MODERN ACADEMY IN TIROL. REBECCA SAUNDERS COMPOSER IN RESIDENCE. 15TH EDITION 29.08. – 09.09.2018 KLANGSPUREN INTERNATIONAL ENSEMBLE MODERN ACADEMY 2018 KLANGSPUREN SCHWAZ is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2018. The annual Tyrolean festival of contemporary music provides a stage for performances, encounters, and for the exploration and exchange of new musical ideas. With a different thematic focus each year, KLANGSPUREN aims to present a survey of the fascinating, diverse panorama that the music of our time boasts. KLANGSPUREN values open discourse, participation, and partnership and actively seeks encounters with locals as well as visitors from abroad. The entire beautiful region of Tyrol unfolds as the festival’s playground, where the most cutting-edge and modern forms of music as well as many young composers and musicians are presented. On the occasion of its own milestone anniversary – among other anniversaries that KLANGSPUREN SCHWAZ 2018 will be celebrating this year – the 25th edition of the festival has chosen the motto „Festivities. Places.“ (in German: „Feste. Orte.“). The program emphasizes projects and works that focus on aspects of celebrations, festivities, rituals, and events and have a specific reference to place and situation. KLANGSPUREN INTERNATIONAL ENSEMBLE MODERN ACADEMY is celebrating its 15th anniversary. The Academy is an offshoot of the renowned International Ensemble Modern Academy (IEMA) in Frankfurt and was founded in the same year as IEMA, in 2003. The Academy is central to KLANGSPUREN and has developed into one of the most successful projects of the Tyrolean festival for new music. The high standards of the Academy are vouched for by prominent figures who have acted as Composers in Residence: György Kurtág, Helmut Lachenmann, Steve Reich, Benedict Mason, Michael Gielen, Wolfgang Rihm, Martin Matalon, Johannes Maria Staud, Heinz Holliger, George Benjamin, Unsuk Chin, Hans Zender, Hans Abrahamsen, Wolfgang Mitterer, Beat Furrer, Enno Poppe, and most recently in 2017, Sofia Gubaidulina.

  • Harrison Birtwistle Selected Reviews
Harrison Birtwistle Selected Reviews The Last Supper BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra (January 2017) "The Last Supper was designed as a millennial work. Convened by Ghost (Susan Bickley), Jesus and his disciples survey some of the miseries visited upon the world since their last meeting in Jerusalem. References to looking through “the three zeros of the year 2000” sounded awkward at the time, as did the hurried apologies to “Jews, blacks, Aborigines, women, gypsies [and] homosexuals”, but Birtwistle’s music has worn well. Its heft and humour spring from the page in sharp flecks of pizzicato strings, sinister tattoos from the side drum, coppery, cimbalom-like chords and thick knots of sound from double basses, low woodwind and accordion. The choral writing (sung by the BBC Singers) is superb." - Anna Picard, The Times **** "When The Last Supper was new, in a pre-9/11 world, some of its concerns felt outmoded. How wrong we were. Now it has proved its enduring pertinence." - Fiona Maddocks, The Observer "Birtwistle’s music feels tremendously lyrical, even opulent 17 years after the opera’s premiere. It’s quite often blunt and uncompromising, but the Latin choral motets that accompany Christ’s three visions summon remarkable poise and focus in his choral writing, and his lengthy foot-washing scene, in which Christ humbles himself before each of his disciples in turn, has an astonishing sense of pathos even amid its wailing orchestration that’s only increased by its inexorable repetitions." - David Kettle, The Arts Desk ***** "Birtwistle’s ritualistic writing is marvellous, layer upon layer of skewed time and perspective underpinned by a grim, grand pace unfolding from the bottom of orchestra.

But there are reasons far more compelling than mere longevity to regard Elliott Carter as the most eminent of living American composers, and as one of the foremost composers in the world at large. His name has come to be synonymous with music that is at once structurally formidable, expressively extraordinary, and virtuosically dazzling: music that asks much of listener and performer INTRODUCTION alike but gives far more in return. Carter was born in New York and, except during the later years of his education, has always lived there. After college and some postgraduate study at Harvard, like many an aspiring American composer of his generation who did not find the training he sought at home, Carter went off to Paris to study with Nadia Boulanger, an experience which, while enabling a necessary development of technique, also lent his work a conservative, neoclassical style for a time.

INTERPRETATIVE ISSUE PERFO CONTEMPORARY PIANO MUSIC J by\ Philip Thomas (Volume I) Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of PhD in Performance Practice Department of Music University of Sheffield April 1999 SUMMARY This thesis explores practical and theoretical issues in interpreting contemporary notated piano music. Interpretative problems and approaches are discussed with a practical bias, using a varied selection of musical sources mostly from the last fifty years. The diversity of compositional styles and methods over this period is reflected in the diversity of interpretative approaches discussed throughout this thesis. A feature of the thesis is that no single interpretative method is championed; instead, different approaches are evaluated to highlight their benefits to interpretation, as well as their limitations. It is demonstrated how each piece demands its own approach to interpretation, drawing from different methodologies to varying degrees in order to create a convincing interpretation which reflects the concerns of that piece and its composer. The thesis is divided into four chapters: the first discusses the implications and ambiguities of notation in contemporary music; the second evaluates the importance of analysis and its application to performance and includes a discussion of the existing performance practice literature as well as short performer-based analyses of three pieces (Saxton's Piano Sonata, Tippett's Second Piano Sonata, and Feldman's Triadic Memories); the third chapter considers notions of style and performing traditions, illustrating the factors other than analysis that can 'inform' interpretation; and the fourth chapter draws together the processes demonstrated in the previous chapters in a discussion of the interpretative issues raised by Berio's Seguenza IV.

Since 1939, nearly all disciplines have been represented over the years, from orchestra Instruments to chamber music, piano and voice. The only exception was composition, a discipline essential to performers but often ill regarded by the public. Now however, in Geneva, the two worlds now cohabit. By offering a Composition Prize, for which the award winning work will be compulsory for performers the following year, the Geneva International Music Competition hopes to contribute to the emergence of a true musical modernity, whereby the creative act of the composer will be regarded with the same standards of respect and admiration as the re-creative act of the performer. The Geneva Competition’s Composition Prize follows the tradition started with the Prix Reine Marie José, which was awarded from 1958 to 2008 to more than 20 works from diverse disciplines, ranging from quartets to concertos, symphonies to pieces for solo and electronic instruments. With the support of the Fondation Reine Marie José, the Geneva public now has the possibility of watching a performance of the , of awarding the Audience Prize to the piece of its choice and of re-listening to the award-winning work the following year, during the competition performances.

  • Nicolas Hodges Pairs Beethoven with Birtwistle on Disc
Nicolas Hodges pairs Beethoven with Birtwistle on disc 6 November 2020 WERGO | WER 6860 2 Beethoven Fantasy op. 77 Birtwistle Variations from the Golden Mountain FIRST RECORDING Beethoven Bagatelles op. 126 Birtwistle Gigue Machine FIRST RECORDING Beethoven Allegretto, WoO 61 Birtwistle Dance of the metro-gnome FIRST RECORDING “He plays the classics as if they were written yesterday, and what was written yesterday as if it were already a classic.” Tempo Magazine In a new solo album to be released on 6 November 2020, pianist Nicolas Hodges pairs Birtwistle with Beethoven in A Bag of Bagatelles on Wergo. The disc was recorded in November 2019 in the presence of Sir Harrison Birtwistle himself; Hodges enjoys a close relationship with the composer, who described him as “becoming like my Peter Pears”. It includes the first recordings of three works by Sir Harrison Birtwistle and originally premiered by Hodges, including the witty Dance of the metro- gnome which sets the pianist against an impish metronome, and the virtuosic Gigue Machine of 2011, with its ceaseless warp and weft driven by a musical machine whose operation defies logic. Gigue Machine won the best Instrumental Solo BASCA British Composers Award in 2013. Birtwistle’s Variations from the Golden Mountain, premiered by Hodges in 2014, features precipitous changes in mood and matter, like Beethoven’s Bagatelles, op. 126. Hodges sets Birtwistle against Beethoven in his 250th anniversary year, also recording his Fantasy op. 77 and Allegretto, WoO 61. “his performance [of Beethoven’s Bagatelles op. 126] was engrossing... What we heard was an authoritative, assured and, at times, stunning rendition of the bagatelles that brought out their many contrasts.” – Classical Melbourne, September 2014 Nicolas Hodges returned to the stage in September, appearing at Strasbourg’s Festival Musica to perform Simon Steen- Andersen’s Piano Concerto with the Basel Sinfonietta and Baldur Bronnimann.
