Four others on board also died. CALIFORNIA Kobe Bryant, four others killed in helicopter crash in Calabasas Bryant excelled at Lower Merion High in Ardmore, Pa., near Philadelphia, winning numerous national awards as a senior before announcing his intention to skip college and enter the NBA draft. He was selected 13th overall by Charlotte in 1996, but the Lakers had already worked out a deal with the Hornets to acquire Bryant before his selection. Bryant impressed Lakers General Manager Jerry West during a pre-draft workout session in Los Angeles. Less than three weeks later, the Lakers traded starting center Vlade Divac to the Hornets in exchange for Bryant’s rights. Bryant, whose favorite team growing up was the Lakers, had to have his parents co-sign his NBA contract because he was 17 years old. The 6-foot-6 guard made his pro debut in the 1996-97 season opener against Minnesota; at the time he was the youngest player ever to appear in an NBA game.

  • Renormalizing Individual Performance Metrics for Cultural Heritage Management of Sports Records
Renormalizing individual performance metrics for cultural heritage management of sports records Alexander M. Petersen1 and Orion Penner2 1Management of Complex Systems Department, Ernest and Julio Gallo Management Program, School of Engineering, University of California, Merced, CA 95343 2Chair of Innovation and Intellectual Property Policy, College of Management of Technology, Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, Lausanne, Switzerland. (Dated: April 21, 2020) Individual performance metrics are commonly used to compare players from different eras. However, such cross-era comparison is often biased due to significant changes in success factors underlying player achievement rates (e.g. performance enhancing drugs and modern training regimens). Such historical comparison is more than fodder for casual discussion among sports fans, as it is also an issue of critical importance to the multi- billion dollar professional sport industry and the institutions (e.g. Hall of Fame) charged with preserving sports history and the legacy of outstanding players and achievements. To address this cultural heritage management issue, we report an objective statistical method for renormalizing career achievement metrics, one that is par- ticularly tailored for common seasonal performance metrics, which are often aggregated into summary career metrics – despite the fact that many player careers span different eras. Remarkably, we find that the method applied to comprehensive Major League Baseball and National Basketball Association player data preserves the overall functional form of the distribution of career achievement, both at the season and career level. As such, subsequent re-ranking of the top-50 all-time records in MLB and the NBA using renormalized metrics indicates reordering at the local rank level, as opposed to bulk reordering by era.

  • Episode 6: Drazen Petrovic and Basketball’S Cold War
Death at the Wing Episode 6: Drazen Petrovic and Basketball’s Cold War ⧫ ⧫ ⧫ Back in 1988, the USA Men’s Basketball team did something they almost never did... ARCHIVAL ANNOUNCER: The United States found themselves in a position in the last seven minutes of this game of having to score on almost every possession and they could not. After winning 9 of the last 10 Olympics they competed in, they lost. ARCHIVAL ANNOUNCER: But there’s no time, really, for even a miracle now. And the Soviets are already celebrating. The USA suddenly found itself wearing bronze. It did not go over well. And so, as the dust settled, they decided to do what America does best: get better through hard work, inch by inch, grinding it out… I’m kidding. No, we did the real American thing. ARCHIVAL ANNOUNCER: What may well be the best basketball team ever assembled… ...which is throwing lots of money at something to make even more money. And so, for the next Olympics, they formed a super squad of sorts. No more amateurs. It was time to bend the rules a little bit and bring in the pros. And, of course, bring in Reebok to sponsor it. ARCHIVAL ANNOUNCER: And now, the United States of America. This was the Dream Team. Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Michael Jordan. This wasn’t about winning gold. This was about buying the whole fucking gold mine. Shock and awe. 1 But in Barcelona in 1992, one player in all of the Olympics didn’t get the memo... or fax.

  • MEDIA GUIDE VLADE DIVAC GENERAL MANAGER Vlade Divac Enters His Sixth Season at the Kings, His Fifth As General Manager
2019-20 PRESEASON MEDIA GUIDE VLADE DIVAC GENERAL MANAGER Vlade Divac enters his sixth season at the Kings, his fifth as General Manager. He joined the Kings on March 3, 2015 as the team’s vice president of basketball and franchise operations and was named General Manager on August 31, 2015. One of the most respected and revered individuals in franchise history, Divac returns to Sacramento having spent more than a decade serving the NBA and international sporting communities with the same distinction that solidified his reputation as a consummate teammate, player, humanitarian and overall difference-maker on and off the basketball court. Divac has served in a variety of administrative and leadership roles since retiring from professional basketball in 2007. In addition to his philanthropic efforts focused on helping children in his native country and other reaches of the globe, he was named President of the Serbian Olympic Committee in 2009. Under his guidance, Serbian athletes have enjoyed greater success and the country is experiencing a resurgence on the international stage. In 16 NBA campaigns with Los Angeles, Charlotte and Sacramento, Divac averaged 11.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1.4 blocks per game over 1,134 contests. He is only one of four players in league annals to accrue at least 13,000 points, 9,000 rebounds, 3,000 assists, 1,200 steals and 1,600 blocked shots, joining Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Hakeem Olajuwon and Kevin Garnett with that distinction. His six seasons in a Kings uniform marked the most successful period in team history, including a league-high 61 wins in 2001-02 and a trip to the Western Conference Finals.

  • Mission Possible by Roland Lazenby
Mission Possible By Roland Lazenby Originally published in Hoop Magazine. Reprinted with permission. Permission granted 7/20/01 Jeanne Tang, NBA 1 From his earliest days in the NBA, the frustration has shadowed Vlade Divac. For each night when he played basketball for the Los Angeles Lakers, the bad feelings would slip away, only to reappear at game’s end. “My country’s a war zone,” he said miserably while chatting with a cameraman on the Lakers team bus in December 1992. Their cameraman responded by pointing out that strife ridden South Central Los Angeles and Divac’s home, the former Yugoslavia, had different circumstances but similar problems: ethnic misunderstanding and hatred that only seemed to breed more hatred, more misunderstanding. “So many crazy people,” Divac said sadly. In the seven seasons since that conversation, the craziness had only increased, with war and ethnic violence spreading like an ugly malignancy through Serbia, Bosnia, Croatia, Kosovo, Montenegro, and Albania. During that time, Divac’s NBA career has shifted first from Los Angeles, to Charlotte, and now to Sacramento, where he starts at center for an exciting Kings team. Now, just as it did in Los Angeles, his time on the court helps him set aside his worries for a few hours. In fact, the Kings, with their running, gunning, ball-sharing style, provide a perfect escape. Divac himself can whip up a snazzy full-court underhand outlet for an easy bucket at the other end. Or the big center can execute a fundamentally pure drop step, then pause right in the middle of it to zip a no-look assist to a cutting teammate.

  • The Screaming Eagle
The Screaming Eagle talks to Junior Championship and Youth League Women’s coach Tom Bandilovski Screaming Eagle (SE) Hi Tom, thanks for taking the time to talk to me. You’ve been around Diamond Valley for a few years now and you’re well known for being a man of few words, so I’m guessing I’ll have to drag the information out of you haha. Seriously, you don’t have to be a Rhodes Scholar to know you’ve got an accent. Tell me about your background Tom Bandilovski (TB) I was born in the Czech Repblic but grew up in a small place called Ohrid in south west Macedonia. By small I mean it had a population of around 50,000 which is about the same size as Mildura. When I finished secondary school I went to university in Skopje, the capital and competed my bachelor degree in mechanical engineering. SE Did you start playing basketball at school? TB I was a bit of a late starter compared to many, I started in year 7 at the age of 13. It was at that time that I developed a real passion for the game, and despite starting late, I knew I wanted to play at the highest level I could. SE Did you play any other sports as a kid? TB I think I had a go at pretty much every sport available, in fact I think the only game I haven’t had a go at in some way during my life is Aussie Rules. I enjoyed playing any sport including boxing which I did to try and improve my footwork for basketball, waterpolo, soccer was another one I liked playing.

Wybitny sportowiec chorwacki, który otworzył drzwi graczom europejskim do kariery koszy- karskiej w Stanach Zjednoczonych. Zawodnik ten dzięki wyjątkowym umiejętnościom i ciężkiej pracy stał się gwiazdą w amerykańskiej lidze NBA. Często porównywano go do Mozarta.
