We discovered our flight to Addis Ababa with Ethiopian Airlines was delayed due to the late arrival of the incoming aircraft but finally we were airborne on the overnight flight. Day 2 Sunday 22nd September Addis Ababa to Antananarivo As we began our descent, it was clear we’d have a very tight transfer to make our onward flight connection, as would most of the other passengers on the flight. Ethiopian Airlines rose to the challenge however, and when we landed directed us to a fleet of buses, each duly depositing passengers at the right aircraft, without even going into the terminal. Once on board we met Luis, the last member of our group who had flown from Zurch, and were swiftly on our way. We arrived on time at Antananarivo Airport, where immigration formalities were slightly better organised than on previous visits. -

An 11 hrs flight took us to Antananarivo, where we landed just before Participants midnight. Once through after visa and passport control we met Zina at the airport. We stayed at IC Tomas Carlberg (Tour leader), Jonas Nordin, Hotel and fell asleep at 01:30. Sweden; Rolf Nordin, Sweden; Olof Persson, Sweden; Jesper Hornskov, Denmark; Eric November 2nd Schaumburg, Denmark; Hans Harrestrup Andersen, Woke up at 6, met the Danes (JH, ES, HW, and Denmark; Hans Wulffsberg, Denmark; Ian Fryer, UK HHA), and had breakfast. Changed c. 400 Euro each Serge “Zina” Raheritsiferana (organizer and driver), and got 1 540 000 ariary… Departure at 7:30 Fidson “Fidy” Albert Alberto (guide), and Lala. heading north towards Ankarafantsika NP. Saw a male Malagasy Harrier c. 16 km south of Ankazobe Correspondence (-18.45915, 47.160156), so stopped for birding [email protected] (Tomas Carlberg) there 9:45-10:05. Stop at 11:40 to buy sandwiches for lunch. Lunch with birding 12:55-13:15. The Phylogeny of the Zygopterous Dragonflies As Based on The
THE PHYLOGENY OF THE ZYGOPTEROUS DRAGON- FLIES AS BASED ON THE EVIDENCE OF THE PENES* CLARENCE HAMILTON KENNEDY, Ohio State University. This paper is merely the briefest outline of the writer's discoveries with regard to the inter-relationship of the major groups of the Zygoptera, a full account of which will appear in his thesis on the subject. Three papers1 by the writer discussing the value of this organ in classification of the Odonata have already been published. At the beginning, this study of the Zygoptera was viewed as an undertaking to define the various genera more exactly. The writer in no wise questioned the validity of the Selysian concep- tion that placed the Zygopterous subfamilies in series with the richly veined '' Calopterygines'' as primitive and the Pro- toneurinae as the latest and final reduction of venation. However, following Munz2 for the Agrioninae the writer was able to pick out here and there series of genera where the devel- opment was undoubtedly from a thinly veined wing to one richly veined, i. e., Megalagrion of Hawaii, the Argia series, Leptagrion, etc. These discoveries broke down the prejudice in the writer's mind for the irreversibility of evolution in the reduction of venation in the Odonata orders as a whole. Undoubt- ably in the Zygoptera many instances occur where a richly veined wing is merely the response to the necessity of greater wing area to support a larger body. As the study progressed the writer found almost invariably that generalized or connecting forms were usually sparsely veined as compared to their relatives. -

Ultimate Madagascar
Long-tailed Ground Roller (tour participant Rienk Nieuwland) ULTIMATE MADAGASCAR 9 – 26/30 OCTOBER 2018 LEADER: CHRIS KEHOE Our recent tour to the remarkable island of Madagascar saw us explore the rainforests of the east, the dry forests and wetlands of the north and the amazing spiny forests and coastlines of the west. Members of all of Madagascar’s endemic bird families were seen, including all five fabulous Ground Rollers, all three Mesites, three species of Asity, the spectacular Cuckoo Roller and a host of Vangas, not least the incredible Helmet Vanga, and Malagasy Warblers. In addition, we saw all of the extant Coua species and many other wonderful birds such as Crab Plovers, Red-tailed Tropicbirds, Madagascan Ibises and Malagasy Sacred Ibises, Madagascan Harriers, White-browed and Madagascan Owls, Madagascan and Collared Nightjars and Madagascan Fish Eagles. Lemurs also features strongly on the tour and we had multiple encounters with the incomparable Indri, great to see and hear, plus the likes of Coquerel’s and Verreaux’s Sifakas, Brown lemurs, Woolly Lemurs, Bamboo Lemurs, dazzling Black-and-white Ruffed Lemurs, noisy Sportive Lemurs and diminutive Mouse and Dwarf Lemurs – not to mention the most iconic of them all, the delightful Ring-tailed Lemur. In particular, those transmitted by mosquitoes present the greatest challenges to disease control efforts. An understanding of the molecular basis for mosquito innate immunity to arbovirus infection is therefore critical to investigations regarding arbovirus evolution, virus-vector ecology, and mosquito vector competence. In this review, we discuss the current state of understanding regarding mosquito innate immunity to West Nile virus. We draw from the literature with respect to other virus-vector pairings to attempt to draw inferences to gaps in our knowledge about West Nile virus and relevant vectors. FINAL REPORT Biodiversity assessment, and strategic conservation planning, for the riparian forests of the Spiny Forest Ecoregion of Madagascar. By: Alison Cameron (PhD student, Leeds University, UK) and Maminarina Dutel Ravoninjatovo (DEA student, University of Tulear, Madagascar) Introduction Madagascar has been called the highest biodiversity priority in the world but biodiversity conservation priorities within Madagascar are only now being identified. Recent research, biodiversity planning and conservation action have focused on east coast rainforest areas, while other areas of potentially very high biological interest have largely been ignored. The WWF Spiney Forests Ecoregion action plan indicates that West coast dry forests and riparian forests are under-represented in Madagascar’s reserve system, and are being degraded and fragmented at very high rates. This project is therefore addressing deficiencies in biodiversity data for this region in collaboration with The University of Tulear, WWF, and Frontier. Project Aims and Objectives To provide an opportunity for transfer of entomological survey skills from Alison Cameron (PhD student) to a Malagasy DEA student (Maminarina Dutel Ravoninjatovo). To provide the DEA student with experience of project decision making processes and meeting project by providing opportunities to integrate with project teams from WWF (World Wide Fund For Nature) and Frontier Madagascar. The production of a DEA thesis, co-supervised by the University of Tulear and WWF staff in Tulear. To make field survey data publically available through the national biodiversity data base, known as the “Platforme D’Analyse” (PDA)*. Training Initial training was conducted in Beza Mahafaly Special Reserve, between the 29th - 31st Oct 2002. Alison spent 3 days in the field training Dutel (Photo 1 right) and also Edidy (Photo 1, left) who runs the small natural history museum at Beza Mahafaly. -

Dijkstra Gortestraat 11, NL-2311 MS Leiden, The Netherlands: e-mail: [email protected] The taxonomy of the approximately 850 species of sub-Saharan African Odonata is relatively well-known, probably due to the impoverished nature of the fauna as compared to that of other tropical regions. The need for revisions, study of higher classification, comprehension of (often clinal, environmentally induced) variability and knowledge of larvae, phylogeny and biogeogra- phy are stressed. Taxonomic priorities are discussed for each family. Supportive activities include the production of identification manuals for a broader public, the accumulation of supplemen- tary material and the conservation of existing collections. A list of genera with estimated num- bers of species, taxonomic status and references is provided, as well as a list of important regional works. INTRODUCTION biogeography. The first priority for the taxonomy of African Odonata is, therefore, revisions. Although not as well studied as the Holarctic and Australasian Region’s faunas, knowledge of the REVISIONS & REVIEWS taxonomy of African Odonata is well ahead of those of the Oriental and Neotropic Regions. Subdesert Mesite (Craig Robson) ULTIMATE MADAGASCAR 10 – 30 OCTOBER 2017 LEADER: CRAIG ROBSON This year’s tour delivered an impressive selection of Malagasy specialities. Iconic species like the ground rollers, asities, and mesites were all seen well, and other highlights included feeding Bernier’s Teal, several Humblot’s Herons, Madagascan Grebe, Madagascan Cuckoo-Hawk and Madagascan Sparrowhawk at their nests, Madagascan Fish Eagle, nest-building Madagascan Wood Rails, Madagascan Plover, Madagascan Snipe, Madagascan Sandgrouse, 10-11 species of coua, roosting Madagascan Owl and Collared Nightjar, Cuckoo Roller, Madagascan Pygmy Kingfisher, 20 species of vanga, including Crossley’s and the much- 1 BirdQuest Tour Report: Ultimate Madagascar www.birdquest-tours.com wanted Helmet, Red-tailed Newtonia, both Brown and Grey Emutails, White-throated Oxylabes on the nest, Wedge-tailed Jery, Appert’s Tetraka, and Madagascan Yellowbrow. We also saw a very respectable 35 species of mammal. 25 species of lemur were headlined by the impeccable Indri, and the likes of Diademed Sifaka, while Lesser Hedgehog Tenrec, the lovely Ring-tailed Mongoose, and scores of Humpback Whales are also worthy of a mention. The lucky few, even had brief views of a road-crossing Fossa. For those with a more in-depth and wide-ranging love of wildlife, there were 34 species of reptiles and amphibians to be appreciated, and numerous interesting plants and insects, from Giraffe-necked Weevils to Hissing Cockroaches. Brown Mesite can be extremely tame (Craig Robson) The tour began with a long drive from the capital, Antananarivo, to Ranomafana National Park. There was little for us to see on the way, though we did gain a strong impression of what much of interior Madagascar looks like. -

My notes are composed in Adobe InDesign which allows incredible precision of all the elements of page layout. My choice of typefaces is very specific. Each must include a complete set of glyphs and extended characters. For my etymologies the font must include an easily recognized Greek and the occasional Cyrillic and Hebrew. All must be legible and easily read at 10 points. Adobe Garamond Premier Pro is my specifically chosen text typeface. I find this Robert Slimbach 1989 revision of a typeface created by Claude Garamond (c. 1480–1561) to be at once fresh and classic. Long recognized as one of the more legible typefaces, I find it very easy on the eye at the 10 point size used here. I simply adore the open bowls of the lower case letters and find the very small counters of my preferred two- storied “a” and the “e” against its very open bowl elegant. Garamond’s ascenders and decenders are especially long and help define the lower case letters with instant recognition. -

Dr F.C. FRASER (1880-1963). In addition to his work his general on the phytogeny and classification of the order, in taxonomic works he touched upon all faunal regions, and his regional monographs on the fauna ofIndia, Australasia, Africa and South Ame- rica are much more than merely an indispensable basis for subsequent research. His odonatological oeuvre consists of over 300 papers and treatises, scattered in periodicals of all continents. Although he himself kept a fairly good record of his publications, a complete bibliography has been not avail- never published, and many of his papers are readily able outside the largest specialized libraries. The present bibliography is based on the list compiled by the late Professor Dr B.E. MONTGOMERY, and was subsequently completed Record. All titles from various sources, including the Zoological were checked with Dr KIA UTA’s reprints or xerox copies in Professor B. library; therefore I hope that the bibliography is largely complete and that not many bibliographic errors have escaped our notice. During his years as a surgeon in the Indian Medical Service, Dr Fraser devoted most of his free time to the Indian fauna. His work, largely summarized in the three odonate volumes of the Fauna of British India almost that (1933-1936), still represents everything is so far known on dragonflies of the IndianSubcontinent.Dr Fraser, there- fore, is rightly considered the “Father of Indian Odonatology”. -

Oooh man I was right! The trip started in paradisiacal surroundings on the island of Mahe, the largest of all islands that together form the Seychelles. Before embarking the Silver Discoverer , we planned some pre-tour birding. In the afternoon we made an outing to find the rare Seychelles White-eye, Seychelles Blue-Pigeon, and Seychelles Sunbird. Rapidly they were found, and good looks were enjoyed by all. In the evening after dinner we went out for probably the rarest and most difficult bird of the entire tour, the Seychelles Scops-Owl. For a long time we heard no response, but just before we decided to leave the designated spot we heard one quick rasping call. Soon after, we found the bird in full delight—just amazing! The enchanting Seychelles Sunbird has a very restricted range (photo M.Valkenburg) Our journey would take us from several Seychellois islands to Madagascar, visiting the world-famous Aldabra Atoll on the way, ending the trip with visits to Reunion and Mauritius. This adventure was one-of- a-kind, with our program visiting so many difficult to reach places where we had the chance of finding many of the world’s most hard-to-get endangered species.
