M. Orientalist Ethnonationalism: From Irredentism to Independentism Discourse analysis of the Albanian ethnonationalist narrative about the National Rebirth (1870-1930) and Kosovo Independence (1980-2000) Dukagjin Gorani Cardiff School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies Cardiff University This thesis is submitted to Cardiff University in fullfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy December 2011 1 Acknowledgments I would like to thank the most important people of all, my family and friends. None of this would have been possible without their support. I remain eternally grateful to their patience and understanding throughout the long years of this study. To Dr Tamara Witschge, my chief supervisor: your academic guidance and impervious belief in me is enshrined within every line of this research. For many months, you have been the voice of optimism that helped me navigate through countless moments of despair and aimlessness. Thank you. Finally, to everyone at Cardiff University and particularly to Dr Terry Threadgold: thank you for your understanding, open heart and open mind that made me feel at home in the beautiful Wales. 2 Abstract Orientalist Ethnonationalism: From Irredentism to Independentism Discourse analysis of the Albanian ethnonationalist narrative about the National Rebirth (1870-1930) and Kosovo Independence (1980-2000) The thesis focuses on the chronological identification and detection of the discursive analogies between the category of ‗the nation‘ and those of ‗the West‘, ‗Europe‘, ‗democracy‘ and ‗independence‘ in the Kosovo Albanian ethnonationalist narrative. The study represents a multi-dimensional exercise analysing the ethnonationalist discourse from a wide array of sample text which was produced during two relevant historical periods: the period between 1870-1930 and the period between 1980-2000.

According to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) information, missing persons’ family members [Albanians, Serbs, Montenegrins, Bosniacs, Roma, Egyptians, and Ashkalis] reported to this organization disappearance of 5,950 persons in relation to the armed conflicts in Kosovo. Meanwhile, the fate of 3,462 persons has been revealed and there were 2,488 persons left on the List of the Missing Persons prepared by ICRC by 15 November 2005. According to the HLC’s information, there are 1,785 missing Albanians, 538 Serbs, and 165 persons of other nationalities. Until 15 November 2005, the Republic of Serbia handed over 615 identified Albanian bodies and 14 mortuary bags with unidentified mortal remains to the UNMIK Office for Missing Persons and Forensics [OMPF] and three bodies to the US authorities since those bodies found in the mass graves in Serbia belonged to the US citizens. Serbian Ministry of Interiors [MUP] formed the concealed mass graves in Serbia in order to conceal traces of war crimes committed in Kosovo.

ISBN: 978-1-78453-401-1 (hardback) / 978-0- 85773-932-2 (e-book) In Honour and Memory of Dr Robert Elsie (1950 – 2017) This essay is about major findings in Elsie’s Tribes of Albania, some of his related works, and other sources. It is based on a much shorter book review solely focused on Tribes of Albania that already has been published in the preceding issue of our journal (see Ten Dam 2018: 38-45). The latter review—and perhaps parts of this essay as well—will form part of a broader yet shorter review essay on several of Robert’s Elsie last works on the Albanians, which the peer-reviewed journal Iran and the Caucasus (Brill) intends to publish sometime this or next year. NB: citations and other references from Elsie’s Tribes of Albania—the main book under review— are indicated only by the relevant page numbers of that work, e.g. ‘(p. 1)’, ‘(p. 100)’, etcetera (sometimes e.g. ‘(Elsie p. 100)’ in order to distinguish it clearly from citations and references of other sources in the same paragraph). The other source references in the main text and the footnotes of this article are shown in the Author-Date version of the Modern Humanities Research Association (MHRA) referencing style i.e. ‘(Author Year: page number)’, the preferred referencing format of this journal.
