Let the Season Begin! N ovember is finally here! Which means it is time to start playing some basketball games! We have our home/season opener against LIU Brooklyn TONIGHT and we couldn’t be more excited to get the season ocially underway! The Lady J’s have put in such a great summer, pre-season, and now over a month of practices and are ready to get going! We hope to see you in the stands this season cheering on the Lady J’s! #play GREEN 1 On October 15th, our entire team along with numerous other Jasper athletes joined in to participate in the American Cancer Society Breast Cancer walk in Central Park headed up by our S.A.A.C. It was a great way to show our support and love for those who have been aected by this disease in any way. Our student-athlete commitment to serving the community and showing support for these tremendous organizations is truly second to none. We continue to be committed to being Jasper Strong! #play GREEN 2 Congrats Gabby! Junior guard, Gabby Cajou, was selected preseason All-MAAC 2nd team by the conference coaches. Gabby was last year’s MAAC 6th Man of the Year, the first one in program history, and looking to have a breakout season this year. She sits beside some of the conference’s best players on the second team, an honor that she is truly grateful for and one that wouldn’t be possible without her teammates. The Lady J’s were picked to finish 6th overall in the preseason poll. #play GREEN 3 Brunch and Baskets 2018 Manhattan’s annual Brunch and Baskets took place on Oct, 21st as alumni, friends, and family gathered Draddy Gymnasium to get an inside look into the men’s and women’s teams for the upcoming season. Athletic Director, Marianne Reilly, and both head coaches spoke, as well as both teams participated in a mini practice session for the attendees. #play GREEN 4 Jaspers Out In The Community This month we went to St. Elizabeth’s School in the Bronx to help with their CYO basketball program and play with the youth boys and girls and teach them some basketball skills and concepts. After the basketball portion of the evening our players spoke to the students about what it takes to be a Division 1 student-athlete, their motivations, and advice they had on being successful on the court and in the classroom. We can’t thank Coach O’Boyle and St. Elizabeth’s enough for a great evening and their support for the Lady J’s. We can’t wait to go back! We also helped with Manhattan College’s Safe Halloween where we decorated a ‘sports themed’ classroom for the kids to come trick or treat in! We had coloring pages, hurdles, ladders, and of course candy for them to partake in! I’m not sure who had more fun with the room...the kids or our team! We can’t wait for next year! #play GREEN 5 The STEM Jr. ( Science Technology Engineering and Math) program also came to Draddy this past month where local kids ages 6-8 learned about the above subjects and then were able to visit with our team and learn the “physics” of basketball and partake in dierent basketball drills. We showed them the “science” of passing, shooting, dribbling, as well as put them through an obstacle course of dierent footwork and agility drills. It was our second year helping with this program and it is always so much fun for us to show these young kids a taste of basketball and hopefully get them inspired at a young age to participate in sports! #play GREEN 6 GAME GUIDE RECENT RESULTS: ★ Oct. 30- Exhibition Game vs. Dominican College (W 70-45) UP NEXT: ★ TONIGHT- HOME OPENER vs. LIU Brooklyn 6 PM ★ Nov. 10 @ St. Francis Brooklyn 2 PM ★ Nov. 14 @ UAlbany 5 PM ★ Nov. 17 vs. Stony Brook 2 PM ★ Nov. 24 vs. Detroit Mercy 2 PM #play GREEN 7 Al u m n i S po t l ig h t Bridget Robeson Costigan, Class of 1988 *A fouryear starter for the Lady Jaspers, put Manhattan in the Top 20 in the nation when she led Manhattan to its first MAAC Conference Championship and first NCAA Tournament Berth (vs. Duke) for women in 1987. Breaking three tournament records, Robeson was unanimously voted MVP of the 1987 MAAC Tournament. The fifth Lady Jasper to score 1,000 points, Robeson was key offensively and defensively leading the Lady Jaspers in both scoring and rebounding during her junior and senior years. Majored in Electrical Engineering at Manhattan. What do you do now? ● I am a program manager at Freddie Mac in Virginia. After Manhattan I started my own engineering company and ran it for 10 years before I sold it, then went off on my own and now working at Freddie Mac. What was your favorite basketball memory at Manhattan? ● Making the NCAA tournament. We played Duke and only lost by like 8 points. It was such a cool experience to have a gym packed with fans, special entrances, and just experience What is one piece of advice you would give the current players now? ● Basketball wise, work hard and work together! That is the recipe for great teams; taking all the individual talent and working together and putting it all together. Off the court, take advantage of the city and it’s internship opportunities! I had an internship in downtown Manhattan at City Hall and it was such a fun experience as well as a great resume builder. There are so many opportunities being in New York city, so take advantage of them. What was one of your favorite parts of Manhattan / Why did you choose it? ● I chose MC because it was something different than what my friends were doing and wanted something brand new. I loved the community and the area. There was a feeling of connection right away that you don’t necessarily get at a bigger school because you tend to stay friends with who you already know. I also loved going down to the city, there was always something to do! #play GREEN 8 SECOND ANNUAL PUMPKIN CARVING CONTEST #play GREEN 9 Manhattan Madness 2018 Just last week, the Manhattan College student body kicked o the upcoming basketball seasons with the Annual Manhattan Madness celebration in Draddy Gymnasium. The dance team, cheerleaders, pep band, and both the men’s and women’s teams were highlighted and introduced as we all gathered, with the 6th Borough immensely present as we all got hyped for the Jasper basketball season to begin! This year we wore our “Game Day” shirts, to show that we will wear them throughout the season when there is a home game to help remind the student body to come support the Lady J’s and make the 6th borough the best student section in the nation. It was a fun filled night of music, performing, half court shots with money up for grabs, and most of all...dancing!
