    Blue Öyster Cult – The Symbol Remains (61:38, CD LP, Digital, Frontiers Music/Soulfood, 2020) Das Vertragsverhältnis mit Frontiers Records hat in erster Linie dazu geführt, dass von Blue Öyster Cult ein Teil des Backkatalogs aktuelleren Datums (sprich ab den 90er Jahren) wieder aufgelegt wurde, aber vor allem im letzten Jahr jede Menge Live-Alben erschienen. Doch die eigentliche Überraschung ist das 15. Studiowerk „The Symbols Remains“, dem ersten Studioalbum nach knapp 19 Jahren! Zieht man den Vergleich zum mehr als ordentlichen 2001er Vorgänger „Curse Of The Hidden Mirror“, so fällt auf, dass das neue Material in erster Linie eine gelungene Fortsetzung der Vergangenheit der 70er/80er darstellt. Es mag am inzwischen einigermaßen gefestigten Line-up liegen, dass die 14 Titel definitiv in der eigenen Tradition verwurzelt klingen. Die Arbeiten am Album begannen bereits 2019, wobei der Fokus darauf lag, ein angemessenes Portrait der Band zwischen dem Hier und Jetzt und der langen eigenen Historie zu erschaffen. Die Verbindung aus griffigen Melodien gepaart mit traditionellem, direktem Hard Rock funktioniert immer noch. Logischerweise ist hier nichts von Innovation oder wenig von aktuellem musikalischem Zeitgeist vertreten, doch darum geht es bei diesem Quasi-Comeback nun auch definitiv nicht. Die beiden prägenden Frontmänner / Gitarristen Eric Bloom und Donald „Buck Dharma“ Roeser teilen sich ganz der Vergangenheit Tribut zollend die Gesangsparts auf, unterfüttert vom bodenständigen Rockgroove der musikalischen Mitstreiter Richie Castellano (Gitarre, Keyboards, Backgroundgesang),Danny Miranda (Bass) und Jules Radino (Schlagzeug). Startet das Album noch relativ unspektakulär mit den beiden Rocknummern ‚That Was Me‘ und ‚Box In My Head‘, so schaut beim leicht hymnischen ‚Tainted Blood‘ , wie später beim sich immer mehr steigernden ‚The Alchemist‘ oder dem lässigen ‚The Secret Road‘ der elegische Geist der 70er vorbei.

    Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.

The main cause of the mystery lies in the name of the band containing the word ‘cult.’ This word struck terror in the hearts of parents and curiosity among the youth of the day. Both ends of the spectrum wondered just what was the Blue Oyster Cult? Were they evil? Did their songs contain spells? Were they going to rot the brains of teenagers or worse yet twist them and distort them into joining their sinister organization? After all, the lyrics were bizarre and scary. The music loud and surreal. Vocalist/Guitarist Eric Bloom hid behind mirrored sunglasses, wore black leather and shot lasers at his audience from his fingertips. Band detractors and fans alike relished in the oddities of BOC and were often perplexed and curious about the groups hidden meanings.
