HISTORY DGWS AND AIAW NATIONAL CHAMPIONS 1971-72 DGWS CHAMPIONS (28-1) REGULAR SEASON RESULTS The Division of Girls and Women’s Sports (DGWS) was 10/12 Cal State Fullerton 15-5, 15-3 W 2-0 the fi rst sanctioning body for the National Women’s 10/15 UC Santa Barbara 15-5, 16-14 W 2-0 Volleyball Tournament and would later evolve into the 10/18 Long Beach State 15-13, 15-13 W 2-0 Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) 10/22 UC Santa Barbara 15-6, 15-10 W 2-0 in 1972. But in the fi nal year before the implementation 10/23 San Diego State 15-10, 14-16, 15-3 W 2-1 of the AIAW, UCLA captured its fi rst-ever crown with an 10/27 Cal State Northridge 15-6, 13-15, 15-10 W 2-1 8-0 record at the DGWS Nationals. Prior to the fall of 10/29 Cal Poly 15-2, 15-4 W 2-0 1972, the women’s volleyball season was played out 11/2 Cal State Los Angeles 15-4, 15-1 W 2-0 from October to February. UCLA steamrolled through the 11/6 Cal State Fullerton W 2-1 1971 portion of its season with a 20-1 record, dropping 11/6 Long Beach State 15-9, 15-3 W 2-0 just six sets. The 1971-72 Nationals took place at Miami 11/6 Cal State Northridge 12-15, 15-13, 15-8 W 2-1 Dade Junior College in February and the Bruins continued 11/10 Cal Poly Pomona 15-1, 15-4 W 2-0 their domination, pulling out seven straight-set victories 11/12 Cal Poly 15-4, 15-2 W 2-0 (sets were best 2-of-3). UCLA began the season 10/24 Cal State Northridge 15-11, 15-9 W 2-0 on a 20-match winning streak, losing just two sets during 10/25 UC Santa Barbara 15-13, 15-11 W 2-0 10/30 USC 15-1, 15-2 W 2-0 the fi rst two months. Barbara Wise. 12/14 Hawai’i 15-7, 15-8 W 2-0 3 - SCWIAC Championships (Santa Barbara, Calif.) 1975 AIAW CHAMPIONS (32-2) REGULAR SEASON RESULTS The UCLA women’s volleyball team made it back-to-back 10/3 Long Beach State 15-11, 9-15, 15-6 W 2-1 AIAW titles in 1975, fi nishing the season on a 17-match 10/8 UC Irvine 15-6, 15-8 W 2-0 10/10 San Diego State 10-15, 15-13, 15-10 W 2-1 winning streak to claim its third school championship. 10/11 UC Davis 1 15-4, 15-7 W 2-0 The only blemishes during the Bruins’ 32-2 campaign 10/11 UC Irvine 1 15-1, 15-10 W 2-0 were three-set losses to Cal State Northridge and Long 10/13 Cal State Fullerton 15-2, 15-4 W 2-0 Beach State. UCLA was 11/1 UC Santa Barbara 2 15-1, 15-8 W 2-0 2 perfect through the fi rst six matches, not dropping a game 11/1 Hawai’i 15-9, 15-5 W 2-0 11/1 Long Beach State 2 15-3, 11-15, 15-3 W 2-1 and setting up a rematch of the 1974 championship 11/4 Cal State Northridge 15-4, 15-2 W 2-0 contest against Hawai’i. The result would be the same 11/7 Long Beach State 15-13, 3-15, 12-15 L 1-2 for the Bruins, defeating the Rainbow Wahine 14-12, 11/11 USC 15-6, 15-7 W 2-0 15-11 on Dec. 14 to take the crown.
