Page 7 NOTE FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT Joseph M. Lacko The Executive Board of the Sports Philatelists International, made some plans improving the system in our periodical auctions. Already we have a mini-auction going to raise funds for the expense in purchasing trophies and medals, which are to be awarded at several major exhibi tions during the year. It is my hope and sincere desire that we all give a hand in this mini-auction, which is handled by our capable edi tor, John La Porta. At the beginning we had the idea of the mini-auction with donated material so we can have the auctions going again. I Implore you to help us, not only by bidding on the items listed, but also would ap preciate your donations. I am certain, that you must have some mater ial in the shoe box or folder, that is duplicate, which perhaps some one would be glad to obtain for his collection. Also It is planned that the Journal of Sports Philately would re ceive a 'new face'. Olech W. Wyslotsky, our art editor, has put many hours of work into some attractive new designs. After viewing these, and one is nicer than the other, It would be impossible for one person to select the most attractive and appealing one. Thus, I have suggest ed that we should publish all the designs submitted and let the mem bers vote on the best one. You will have a tough Job to do as Olsch certainly out did himself in the illustrations. At this time, I would like to give a sincere thank you on behalf of the Executive Board to Bill Stoms, who handled our auctions for many years. It was a thankless job, and he gave much of his time and effort, so that the society could realize some monetary benefit along with the members who bought or sold via these auctions. Thank you, Bill. All remaining material has been returned to the members. New plans are being made and Improvements are being made for future auc tions.

A.P.S. Educational Program For Evaluating New Issues

•BUCK BLOT' ASSESSMENTS - Editorial "Black Blots" are assessed against the recent postal emissions listed below in dicating one or more of the following philatelic deficiencies:! 1) A limited printing or limited 'on sale' time in country or origin. (2) An excessively extended issue. (3) Unwaranted high value included. 14) No direct relationship to the issuing country. (5) Oddities intentionally included with the issue. relationship

From the November Issue of the American Philatelist there were no Black-Blots listed for sport issues.

From the December issue there were the following:

FUJEIRA: November releases of pre-Olympic adhesives, including perf. and imperf. "souvenir sheets."

OMAN (STATE): More propaganda labels inscribed "State of Oman" are being foisted on the stamp collecting hobby and the latest is a "set" for the Girl Scouts, and being peddled out of Beirut, Lebanon, in a "package" pf five perf. and imperf. items plus.perf. and Imperf. "sheetlets." The "package" Is offered in excess of $10 U.S.

SHARJAH; An editorial "Black-Blot" is assessed against the so-called "Pre-Olympic-Sapporo Winter Games." This package totals 20 varieties perf. and imperf., plus a "souvenir sheet." $6 plus, U.S.

Another "package" has been released to put the bite on Boy Scout col lectors. This deal salutes the International Jamboree held last Aug. in Japan. The "package" includes a "gold" value, perf. and imperf. plus a "souvenir sliest." Crist ia in excess of -$11 y^s Page 15 THE PRESIDENTS MESSAGE SPI members have been cleaning up around the exhibition circuit these days. I tools the Grand Award at Southwestpex, which makes my "History of Soccer in the Olym pic Games" the first Thematic exhibit to be eligible for the Champion of Champions contest, to be held in New Haven next September. There has been a great deal of controvercy about this decision of the Judges, which I regret, but it does help temper the feeling in many quarters that Topicalists are second class philatelists. Around the country, the following members were awarded the following: Barbara T. Williams Harold Wasserman—A Gold at Sescal Roy Votaw—A Bronze at Balpex Lawrence Morlarty—A Bronze and the SPI Trophy at Ropex Ira Seebacher—A Bronze and the Marcus White Trophy Bill Smlthett—A Silver at Cuy-Lor Nancy Williams—A Bronze at Sepad and a Silver at Suntrapex I won a Gold and the ATA Gold at Ropex Exfilima, in Lima, Peru, was good to several of us: Bob Oesch and Jose Turu Carol won Silvers Emllio Obregon won a Gold and the special Thematic Trophy I won a Silver-Bronze Every bit of this boosts the SPI, and that is what we want. Only by Junplng in and trying can it be done. Let's hear about some of the rest of you. Speaking of shows, I will be judging and holding Topical seminars at Nopex, in New Orleans, in April. I will hope to see some of our members there. I know there are several of you in the South, and per haps we can meet while I am down your way. They have asked to give the SPI Trophy so let me see some of our exhibits in the show.

1972 WORLD FIGURE SKATING CHAMPIONSHIPS Benjamin T. Wright For the fourth time in its history, a host country will issue a stamp recognizing the World Figure Skating Championships, when Canada issues a stamp for that purpost on March 1, 1972 at Calgary, Alberta. While there have been many figure skating stamps issued in recent years by the "wall-paper" manufacturing countries, largely for the "benefit" of the Olympic topical collector, there have been relative ly few issued by member countries of the International Skating Union for championships of the ISU which they have sponsored. The first such World Championship stamp for figure skating was that of in 1966 (Scott 470) for that year's event at Davos. In I967 Austria issued a stamp (Scott 785) for the 100th an niversary of the Wiener Eislauf-Verein (Vienna Skating Club) in con junction with the World Championships held in that city, while in 1971 France issued a stamp (Scott 1299) for the championship held in Lyon. The Calgary championship is only the third to be held in Canada, the prior events having been held in Montreal in 1932 and Vancouver in i960. The championships have been held in the United States five times, first in New York in 1930 and otherwise in Colorado Springs in 1957. 1959. 1965 and 1969. The new stamp represents a first for Calgary, no stamp having ever been issued to honor a specific sports event held in that city. It is also a first for Canada, since no stamp has ever been previous ly Issued by that country in honor of a specific World Championship held there. The design commission for the stamp has been awarded to the De sign Workshop of Toronto. EFFECTIVE~IMMEDIATiLY^^ MEMBER IN GOOD STANDING. THE COST OF THE NEW MEMBERSHIP IS $75.00.
