Project Description (Briefly describe the project and scope of intended works for this project in less than 100 words) This project is to seal a notorious section of the Forsayth Road subject to frequent and sometimes severe accidents. It consists of a significant sharp crest on a corner with limited visibility. Crashes have typically involved tourists, sometimes in conventional vehicles who are unfamiliar with the circumstances and often without experience in traversing unsealed roads, especially the change of road condition at the end of a seal section. The project will continue the goal of sealing the road between Georgetown and Forsayth. Council Priority What priority number is this 1 project? Why is this project a priority? The Forsayth Road is an important connector for major tourism ventures in Etheridge Shire. 1. Cobbold Gorge is a winner of major tourism awards and attracts a significant number of self-drive tourists (including caravans). 2. Forsayth is the terminus of the Savannahlander Tourist train with direct access (40km to and from Georgetown and other tourist spots including Undara lava Tubes. 3. The Forsayth to Einasleigh Road is being progressively sealed by Council as part of a tourist loop in the area. The Forsayth Road (a State Controlled road) is also being sealed progressively and Council has contributed significant funds to this in the past. 4. The Proposed Charleston Dam on the Delaney River near Forsayth will have a significant Recreation area attracting tourists. Project Description (Briefly describe the project and scope of intended works for this project in less than 100 words) The existing lookout is used on a daily (and nightly) basis by tourism operators and locals to provide visitors with a panoramic view of the city and surrounds. The facility is in need of an upgrade to bring it up to a standard expected of a major international tourism destination. Options for the upgrade include extending the existing lookout by constructing a cantilevered viewing platform including a shelter, fencing and interpretive signage. The signage will indicate the significant landmarks visible from the lookout as well as the geological and human history of the Cairns area. At this concept stage, the estimate to design and construct the project is $300,000. Council Priority What priority number is this 1 project? Why is this project a priority?
