This latitudinal trend is markedly different from trends for terres- trial clades. The zonal variation in C/NC ratios within bins is largely due to differences in geographic ranges of the groups; for example, tropical carnivorous species range farther than non-carnivorous ones, thus overlapping them in more latitudinal bins. Differences in the distribution and diversity of carnivorous and non-carnivorous species may arise from a number of sources, including variability of primary production in the tropical eastern Pacific, patchiness of substrates to which non-carnivores are adapted, narrow dietary specializations of tropical carnivores, and higher provinciality found in extratropical regions. VERMEIJ2 1Department of Biological Sciences, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada T6G 2E9 2Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, University of California, Davis, CA 95616, USA Received 27 June 2016; revised 4 October 2016; accepted for publication 25 October 2016 A recurrent theme in evolution is the repeated, independent origin of broadly adaptive, architecturally and function- ally similar traits and structures. One such is the varix, a shell-sculpture innovation in gastropods. This periodic shell thickening functions mainly to defend the animal against shell crushing and peeling predators. Varices can be highly elaborate, forming broad wings or spines, and are often aligned in synchronous patterns. Here we define the different types of varices, explore their function and morphological variation, document the recent and fossil distri- bution of varicate taxa, and discuss emergent patterns of evolution. We conservatively found 41 separate origins of varices, which were concentrated in the more derived gastropod clades and generally arose since the mid-Mesozoic. Varices are more prevalent among marine, warm, and shallow waters, where predation is intense, on high-spired shells and in clades with collabral ribs. Diversification rates were correlated in a few cases with the presence of varices, especially in the Muricidae and Tonnoidea, but more than half of the origins are represented by three or fewer genera. Varices arose many times in many forms, but generally in a phylogenetically clumped manner (more frequently in particular higher taxa), a pattern common to many adaptations. -

Collin, Page 1 of 40 Abstract Caenogastropods, members of the largest clade of shelled snails including most familiar marine taxa, are abundant and diverse and yet surprisingly little is known about their reproduction. In many families, even the basic anatomy has been described for fewer than a handful of species. The literature implies that the general sexual anatomy and sexual behavior do not vary much within a family but for many families this hypothesis remains un-tested. Available data suggest that aphally, sexual dimorphism, maternal care, and different systems of sex determination have all evolved multiple times in parallel in caenogastropods. Most evolutionary transitions in these features have occurred in non-neogastropods (the taxa formerly included in the mesogastropoda). Multiple origins of these features provide the ideal system for comparative analyses of the required preconditions for and correlates of evolutionary transitions in sexual strategies. Detailed study of representatives from the numerous families for which scant information is available, and more completely resolved phylogenies are necessary to significantly improve our understanding of the evolution of sexual systems in the Caenogastropoda. In addition to basic data on sexual anatomy, behavioral observations are lacking for many groups. What data are available indicate that mate choice and sexual selection are complicated in gastropods and that the costs of reproduction may not be negligible. -
Zoogeography of Marine Gastropod in the Southern Caribbean. a New Look

DIAZ Instituto de Investigaciones Marinas de Punta de Betin -lNVEMAR-, Apartado 1016, Santa Martar Colombia ABSTRACT . – Recorded occurrences of 266 species of higher Gastropoda were arranged in nine subareas along the coastal areas of southern Central America and northern South America. The value of different gastropod families as zoogeographic indicators and the degree of faunal “singularity” of subareas were inferred respectively from the mean value of the index of “Breadth of Geographic Range” (BGR) of species involved. BGR was lower among families exhibiting predominantly direct development. About 43% of species are widely distributed in the tropical Western Atlantic, whereas approximately 40% are endemic to the southern Caribbean – enough to consider this area as a separate zoogeographic province. Northern Venezuela, Santa Marta, and the Leeward Islands are the subareas richest in species, whereas the subarea between the Orinoco delta and Surinam is the most depauperate. The number of species occurring in a given subarea is more closely related to environmental heterogeneity than to the shelf extent of the subarea. A similarity level of 50% distinguishes five zoogeographic areas within the lower Caribbean, two of them as transitional to other tropical Western Atlantic Provinces and the other three are proposed as subprov- inces. Trade wind-induced upwelling along the coasts of northern Colombia and Venezuela on the one hand, and zoogeographic links of the present molluscan fauna to the Eastern Pacific on the other, are the main factors explaining the present distribution patterns of marine gastropod in the southern Caribbean. -

D. Cornell University 2018 Abstract The Colorado River no longer reaches the Gulf of California in most years due to numerous upstream dams and associated water diversions for consumptive use. The downstream estuary in Mexico has undergone habitat change as a consequence; however, a paucity of pre-impact data has made it challenging to assess the full scope of change. Fortunately, along the shoreline in the estuary there are accumulations of clam and snail shells that predate dam construction and can provide an invaluable perspective on past community dynamics in the molluscan community. Shell accumulations in the estuary were sampled during 2013 and 2014 at three sites along the north-south salinity gradient that existed prior to upstream water diversions. The living community was sampled during 2014 at the northern-most of these sites, which corresponds to the most estuarine environment from the past. In the following five chapters, a variety of analytical methods are applied to different subsets of the samples to assess change at multiple levels of the ecological hierarchy. Major results
