Waukesha County. WI____ Ten Chimneys is a rural estate located in the Town of Genesee immediately outside the city of Genesee Depot, a small agricultural service center near the heart of Waukesha County. The estate encompasses land near the intersection of State Trunk Highway 83 and Depot Road. About 2/3 of the acreage is wooded, with another 1/3 as cleared farmland. The parcel consists of mostly glacial moraine and has a rolling topography. The complex consists of a main house, cottage, studio and a number of ancillary structures: the main house is sited in a modest ravine with glacial hills rising to the sides and rear. The cottage sits at the crest of this ravine behind the main house. The secondary structures are all located over the top of this ravine and are not visible from the main house and its immediate grounds. Main House The house is wood frame construction on a raised brick foundation. Although technically a two- story house, the building contains four levels including the attic and basement. The main elevation faces south and is composed of a projecting gabled pavilion on the east side attached to a larger and taller side-gabled wing that extends to the west. A one-story gabled wing projects from the north end of the east facade and sits on a raised

Built 1924-25; architects, Crane & Franzheim. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 1024, Lot 7. On June 14 and 15, 1982, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the ANTA Theater and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 5). The hearing was continued to October 19, 1982. Both hearings had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Eighty-three witnesses spoke in favor of designation. Two witnesses spoke in opposition to designation. The owner, with his representatives, appeared at the hearing, and indicated that he had not formulated an opinion regarding designation. The Commission has received many letters and other expressions of support in favor of this designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS The ANTA Theater survives today as one of the historic theaters that symbolize American theater for both New York and the nation. Built in the 1924-25, the ANTA was constructed for the Theater Guild as a subscription playhouse, named the Guild Theater. The fourrling Guild members, including actors, playwrights, designers, attorneys and bankers, formed the Theater Guild to present high quality plays which they believed would be artistically superior to the current offerings of the commercial Broadway houses. More than just an auditorium, however, the Guild Theater was designed to be a theater resource center, with classrooms, studios, and a library. The theater also included the rrost up-to-date staging technology.

SCREEN PLAYS: FROM BROADWAY TO HOLLYWOOD, 1920 - 1966 presents more than 100 films that drew their commercially and critically successful plots and characters, and their talented actors, writers, and directors from Broadway. The series, which continues through October 3, features such Broadway actors as George Arliss, the Barrymores, Shirley Booth, Marlon Brando, Ina Claire, John Garfield, Julie Harris, Helen Hayes, Judy Holliday, the Lunts, Fredric March, Sidney Poitier, Otis Skinner, Laurette Taylor, and Mae West re-creating on film the roles that made them stage legends. While the relationship between the Broadway musical and the Hollywood musical is well-established, this exhibition spotlights the relationship between the Broadway play and the Hollywood film. Since the beginning of the studio system, Hollywood has sought plays that could be adapted into so-called prestige films, adding a patina of class and sophistication. The retrospective places particular emphasis on films made from plays produced by the Theatre Guild, the Group Theatre, and the Playwrights' Company, since many members of these companies made lasting contributions both on Broadway and in Hollywood. Delbert Mann was born in Lawrence, Kansas, in 1920. He moved to Nashville, which he considers his home town, as a young boy when his father came to teach at Scarritt College. He graduated from Hume-Fogg High School and Vanderbilt University, where Dinah Shore and Mann's future wife, Ann Caroline Gillespie, were among his classmates. Also in Nashville he developed a lifelong friendship with Fred Coe through their mutual involvement in the Nashville Community Playhouse. Coe would play a very important role in Mann's life. A few months after his graduation from Vanderbilt in 1941, Mann joined the Eighth Air Force, for which he completed thirty-five missions as a pilot of a B-24 bomber. After the end of the Second World War he attended the Yale Drama School, followed by two years as director of the Town Theatre of Columbia, South Carolina. In 1949, Fred Coe, already a producer at NBC television network, invited Delbert Mann to come to New York to direct live television drama on the "Philco Television Playhouse." Then in its infancy, television offered many fine original plays to its relatively small viewing audience.
