• On the Winter and Spring Aspect of the Macrolepidoptera Fauna of Jordan with Remarks on the Biology of Some Species
© Münchner Ent. Ges., download www.biologiezentrum.at Mitt. Münch. Ent. Ges. 102 65-93 München, 15.10.2012 ISSN 0340-4943 On the winter and spring aspect of the Macrolepidoptera fauna of Jordan with remarks on the biology of some species (Lepidoptera: Tineoidea, Cossoidea, Bombycoidea, Papilionoidea, Geometroidea, Noctuoidea) Dirk STADIE and Lutz LEHMANN († 1) Abstract The results of two lepidopterological expeditions to Jordan from December 20 to December 30, 2008 (provinces of Irbid, Karak, Tafila und Ma’an) and March 19 to March 25, 2009 (provinces: Zarqa, Tafila, Irbid and Balqa) are presented. A total of 166 species of Macrolepidoptera could be recorded, among them 21 species new for Jordan. Desertobia heloxylonia lawrencei subsp. n. is described. The female genitalia of Odontopera jordanaria (STAUDINGER, 1898) comb. n., are figured for the first time. The larvae of Odontopera jordanaria STAUDINGER, 1898, Minucia wiskotti (PÜNGELER, 1902), Allophyes benedictina (STAUDINGER, 1892), Agrochola pauli (STAUDINGER, 1892), Agrochola scabra (STAUDINGER, 1892), Agrochola staudingeri RONKAY, 1984, Conistra acutula (STAUDINGER, 1892), Polymixis apora (STAUDINGER, 1898) and Polymixis juditha (STAUDINGER, 1898) are described and figured. Introduction Our knowledge of the winter aspect of the macrolepidoptera fauna of the southwestern Palaearctic region is still lower compared to other seasons. It has been shown during expeditions that in countries with subtropical- mediterranean climate an interesting macrolepidoptera fauna with numerous poorly known or even new species could be ascertained, in the eremic as well as in the steppe and mediterranean zone. The focus of this communication is on the Noctuidae family, because Noctuid species dominate the species composition in winter (e.g.

  • Density, Damage and Distribution of Cucullia Calendulae (Noctuidae) in Patches of Calendula Arvensis
Revista Colombiana de Entomología 36 (1): 179-180 (2010) 179 Nota científica Density, damage and distribution of Cucullia calendulae (Noctuidae) in patches of Calendula arvensis Densidad, daños y distribución de Cucullia calendulae (Noctuidae) en manchas de Calendula arvensis SERGIO PÉREZ-GUERRERO1, ALBERTO JOSÉ REDONDO-VILLA2 y JERÓNIMO TORRES-PORRAS3 Abstract: Most studies on the family Noctuidae focus on very few species that cause damage to crops; however, there is little information on the biology and ecology of the remaining species of noctuid moths. This work examines the rela- tionship of the larvae of Cucullia calendulae with their main food plant Calendula arvensis. The results showed that the larvae of this species feed on the fruiting bodies, reaching an overall incidence of ca. 30%. In addition, there was a dif- ferential distribution of larvae according to their size. Early stages were found in the reproductive structures while latter stages were found on the stems, which should be due to a defensive strategy. Furthermore, from seven characteristics of the patch taken into account, only the height of the plant explained a greater number of larvae per patch. Key words: Lepidoptera. Feeding behavior. Asteraceae. Fruiting bodies.

  • First Record of Oestrus Ovis Linnaeus, 1758 from Malta, and Case Reports of Myiasis from the Maltese Islands (Diptera: Brachycera)
BULLETIN OF THE ENTOMOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF MALTA (2008) Vol. 1 : 5-10 First record of Oestrus ovis Linnaeus, 1758 from Malta, and case reports of myiasis from the Maltese Islands (Diptera: Brachycera) Paul GATT1 & Trevor ZAMMIT2 ABSTRACT. Oestrus ovis is reported for the first time from Malta. An account is given of four cases of myiasis in Malta, one nasopharyngeal in a sheep host involving O. ovis, and three cutaneous in a human host and in domestic cats, the latter all involving Lucilia sericata. KEY WORDS. Malta, Myiasis, Oestrus ovis, Lucilia sericata. INTRODUCTION The term myiasis was first used by HOPE (1840) to refer to diseases of humans caused specifically by larvae of diptera. It has since then been defined as “the infestation of live vertebrate animals with dipterous larvae, which, at least for a certain period, feed on the host’s dead or living tissue, liquid body substances, or ingested food” (ZUMPT , 1965). Two classifications of myiasis have emerged. The first, an anatomical classification, was proposed by Bishopp (PATTON , 1922) and later modified by JAMES (1947). It is based on the anatomical site of the infestation of the host, and is still widely used as it is simple and practical. The second, a parasitological classification proposed by PATTON (1922), takes into account the degree of the parasitic dependency of the fly on the host, and is based on evolutionary and biological considerations. Dermal or subdermal myiasis, also known as cutaneous myiasis, is the invasion of the skin by larvae of Diptera that cause burrows or boils in the dermal layers, invade and enlarge existing wounds (wound and traumatic myiasis) or form wounds themselves (i.e.

  • Moth Report, 2018
MOTH REPORT 2018 Paula Banza 1 1. Introduction The present report shows the results of Moth Trapping during 2018 in Cruzinha grounds, the headquarters of A Rocha Portugal. The number of sessions throughout the year were only 38, given the lack of volunteers to perform this type of work. We used a Skinner type moth trap with a 125 mercury vapor lamp, placed in the garden area of Cruzinha. Most of the captures were made by a volunteer named Sara Roda and some by Paula Banza, the person in charge of the project. Moth identifications were done by Sara Roda, with the supervision of Paula Banza and the help of Bert Van der Auwermeulen and the photos are from Ana Valadares (www.anavaladaresfotografia.com). The main objective of this work is to gain some knowledge of the diversity, abundance and distribution of moths in some habitats of the Algarve. At the same to use this knowledge as an environmental education tool with students, tourists and other people with interest in the subject. In total we caught 4812 moths, of 328 species belonging to 32 families. The majority of the moths were identified to the species level, with the exception of the genera Agdistis and Hellinsia, of which was not possible to determine the species. In some cases it wasn´t possible to confirm the identification to date. They are included in the statistical report of the study and represented on table 2 with the notation *. 2. Trap location Table 1 registers the Geographical Coordinates for the location of the moth traps.

  • An Annotated Catalogue of the Lepidoptera Collection of Guido Lanfranco at the National Museum of Natural History in Malta
BULLETIN OF THE ENTOMOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF MALTA (2008) Vol. 1 : 67-78 An annotated catalogue of the Lepidoptera collection of Guido Lanfranco at the National Museum of Natural History in Malta Paul SAMMUT1 & John J. BORG2 ABSTRACT. An annotated list of the lepidoptera in the Lanfranco collection donated to the National Museum of Natural History of Mdina in Malta is included. Where relevant, comments on particular species or specimens are provided. KEY WORDS. Lepidoptera collection, Guido Lanfranco, National Museum of Natural History, Malta. PREAMBLE The entomological collection of Mr Guido Lanfranco was acquired by the National Museum of Natural History as a bequest by Mr G. Lanfranco himself. Most of the insect orders occurring in Malta are represented in the Lanfranco collection. Initially Mr Lanfranco had donated the entomological collection to Dr Louis Cassar who, on acquiring the material contacted the senior author who, in turn, suggested that such a collection should be deposited in an appropriate institution instead of it being dismembered amongst a number of private collections. The formal presentation of the collection to the museum was carried out on April 3, 2006, in the presence of Mr and Ms G. Lanfranco, Dr Mario Tabone, Ms Cecilia Xuereb, Dr L. Cassar and the authors. INTRODUCTION In Guido Lanfranco’s collection, the Lepidoptera are represented by 716 specimens belonging to 99 different species. Except for one species of Geometridae, one of Papilionidae and seven of Saturniidae (in all 13 specimens), all the other material has been ascertained by the collector to be of local origin. Unfortunately, 255 specimens (just over 35.6%) have no data label and in this category, a specimen of Euchloe ausonia (Hübner, 1804), a species possibly new to the lepidopterofauna of Malta is present.

Campus de Bellaterra, edifici V; E-08193 Bellaterra (Barcelona) [email protected] Abstract. Notes on Cucullia chamomillae ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775) and Cucullia calendulae Treitschke, 1835 (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) in Catalonia. Two larvae of the genus Cucullia (one being C. chamomillae and the other C. calendulae) were found on camomile in the inland Catalonian administrative region of La Noguera, and their development to adult was followed. Reasoned and critical considerations on the larval forms of these two species are presented, as well as a study dealing with the presence of C. calendulae in Catalonia. The hermiguae Pinker & Bacallado, 1979, status is dealt with, although no definitive conclusion is reached as yet. Practical aspects concerning the genitalic analysis carried out on the adults are also indicated. Resum.

Shahreyari-Nejad, M. Esfandiari, A. Rasekh, M. S. Mossadegh & A. Shirvani Abstract Noctuidae species are mostly plant feeding as caterpillars and nectar feeding as adults, functioning as herbivores, pollinators and prey, as well as include many species of economic importance. Here we intended to contribute to the fauna of seven Noctuidae subfamilies Metoponinae, Eustriotinae, Acontiinae, Cuculliinae, Oncocnemidinae, Psaphidinae and Eriopinae in some Iranian provinces. The flight and baggage reclaim were equally problem free and we rapidly met our familiar guide, Turgay, at Larnaca airport. Our large and luxurious coach whisked us north, with a modest 20 minute delay for visa control at the border to North Cyprus. Because the re-timing of flights made a later arrival at Bellapais, we did the pre-holiday briefing via the coach microphone. At the Monastery Village Hotel, the smooth allocation of rooms meant we were soon enjoying a drink and sitting down to dinner. The group was surprised that we asked they order their breakfasts the previous evening, but this is a system tried and tested in previous years. Day 2 Sunday 23rd March The weather today was mainly sunny with a high of 24○c. Our early morning walk is always a short one from this hotel.

Lepidopterous visitors and potential pollinators of Gymnadenia R. Br. 1813 in the Pyrenees and the Cazorla-Segura mountains (Spain) Abstract: New data of visits to Gymnadenia R. Br. 1813 by Lepidoptera in the Pyrenees (Huesca, Lérida) and in the Cazorla-Segura mountains (Jaén, Spain) are presented. Key words: Lepidoptera, Gymnadenia, Pyrenees, Huesca, Lérida, Cazorla-Segura, Jaén, Spain. Introducción El Grupo de Gymnadenia conopsea está formado por dos especies: G. conopsea (L.) R. Br. y G. odoratissima (L.) L. C. M. Rich. (Delforge).
