On July 2-4, 2007, sixty representatives of international and national non-governmental organizations, grassroots groups, the Haitian government and other key stakeholders for Haiti’s environment created the Kowalisyon Nasyonal pou Anviwonman Ayisyen (KNAA), or Haitian National Coalition for the Environment. The Coalition brings together the many groups, organizations and institutions devoted to restoring Haiti’s natural environment, uniting them around key goals and strengthening their impact through exchange, coordination and collaboration. The Haitian National Coalition for the Environment works on a national, grassroots level to attack the root causes of environmental degradation by promoting exchange and solidarity to help: * Undertake massive, intensive reforestation, * Combat the misery of poverty, and * Research and promote alternative energy. Will your organization become a formal member of the Coalition? Each organization that decides to participate in the coalition will designate one representative. In this way, all the members of the coalition will be equal. In order to participate in the Coalition you must meet one simple condition: all member organizations must be committed to working to protect, rehabilitate and/or renew Haiti’s environment. If your group is serious about the environment and you are willing to work for greater collaboration with other Haitian and international groups, please complete the attached questionnaire and join us today! As a member of the Coalition: * Your organization will be listed in the national directory of organizations featured on the Coalition’s website (www.haitienvironment.org), and you will receive a copy of the directory. * You can send a representative to participate in departmental meetings. * You can send one representative to the annual national meeting to participate in decision-making for the Coalition. * You will receive monthly reports about what is happening in the country, and you can contribute news to include in the monthly reports. * You will have access to all the resources on the coalition’s website and can feature your own work and resources there. We are anxious to begin the work of building a national directory of organizations working on the environment, assembling available resources on the website, and promoting the Coalition throughout Haiti. We need your completed questionnaire to build the directory and begin creating an online resource that includes best practices for Haiti’s environment. With your help we can become a unified voice for Haiti’s environment, representing organizations both large and small, both grassroots-based and international. By putting our heads together to create a platform we can make our voices heard by the Haitian government and the international community, and we can change the future of Haiti’s environment. We are already planning big things for 2008, including a national tally of trees planted during the year, but we need your input to make an action plan that can have immediate impact. We can let the world know that we are serious about saving the soil, water, and air for future generations of Haitians with national events on June 5, 2008, International Environment Day. What kind of events would you participate in? What goals do you already have for 2008? Help us fill the calendar with local and regional events, training programs and exchanges.     WATER RESOURCES ASSESSMENT OF HAITI August 1999 Haiti Dominican Republic US Army Corps of Engineers Mobile District and Topographic Engineering Center Water Resources Assessment of Haiti Executive Summary Haiti is one of the most densely populated countries in the world and one of the poorest in the Western Hemisphere. The population has already outstripped domestic food production, and it is estimated that the population will be 8 million by the year 2000. One-third of the population lives in the Département de l’Ouest where Port-au-Prince is located. Heavy migration from rural areas to towns and cities occurring over the past decade has adversely affected the distribution of the water supply. Access to water and sanitation facilities is inadequate, contributing to poor living conditions, disease, and a high mortality rate. In 1990 only 39 percent of the 5.9 million residents had adequate access to water and only 24 percent to sanitation. The lack of potable water for basic human needs is one of the most critical problems in the country. Given the rainfall and abundant water resources, there is adequate water to meet the water demands, but proper management to develop and maintain the water supply requirements is lacking. However, the water supply sector is undergoing complete transformation. Although currently there is no comprehensive water policy, progress is being made towards establishing a national water resources management policy. Numerous agencies and non-government organizations (NGO’s) are working to provide water, many of which conduct their missions with little or no coordination with other agencies, which creates duplication of work and inefficient use of resources.

Captain Zeaton is a section commander with the 21st OSS, deployed with the Canadian earthquake relief effort to Haiti.
